- A Day in the Life of a Piano Mover - How to Easily Move a Piano Up & Down Stairs!
In this video the Stumpf Moving & Storage piano moving crew takes you along with them as they move a large old upright piano up a flight of 40 stairs! Moving this piano to its new home wasn't easy, in fact this is one of the most difficult types of moves that our piano crew come across. This piano move is made difficult because the stairs our movers must use have deteriorated over time, leaving them in poor condition. Not to mention the sheer number of stairs involved! Once our piano movers reach the top of the stairs, they are not done yet! They must still use a ramp to reach the porch of the house to complete the piano move. Once they have placed the new piano where the homeowners want it, it is time to remove the old piano. The old piano is removed from the home and taken back down to our truck the same way that the new piano was brought up. Once the old piano is on our truck, it is strapped down and taken to our warehouse for disposal. Watch as our professional piano movers navigate this difficult location to easily deliver this beautiful old upright piano. Please do not try this at home. This is not an easy task and should only be performed by trained professional piano movers.

What kind of wax do you use on the piano board?
Hey Josh! Just like any veteran skateboarder, we use candal wax. However, we use clear unscented wax because we don't want to run the risk of any color transfer or staining of anything the piano board will come in contact with. Special wax is sold, but it is honestly not worth it.

What do you use to wax the piano board?
We use a special wax similar to candal wax. The most important thing is that the candal is free and clear of any color or sent. We don't want anything to transfer onto or stain any surfaces we are going across.
How do you dispose of a piano like that? Where?
They are disposed of in a dumpster or taken to the dump directly.
I used to be a backline tech in my youth, so I have delivered hundreds of pianos. Uprights like this, baby grands and grand pianos as well. There were two of us, and we managed to take them upstairs, as well place them on high stages for a performance then take them down too. Leverage is the key, because you damn sure aren't going to man handle pianos with just two people involved. Same equipment as this though. Furniture dollies and skids with straps.

Impressive! Did that do any damage to the piano board?
Thank you! Waxing the piano board helps reduce friction and makes it easier to push the piano up stairs. It also reduces any damage to the piano board. So, aside from any normal wear and tear, the piano board is absolutely fine. Keep in mind, piano boards are built for moving pianos up and down stairs. We use our piano boards for moves like this all the time, and they hold up for several years before needing to be retired.

Yes, there is no easy way to move a piano up stairs. It only gets easier when you are a trained professional with the education and experience to perform such a move. This should never be done by anyone who is inexperienced.
