Lauten Audio LA-220 Condenser Mic Review / Test (Compared to Rode NT1, AT2020, NW7000)

- Today I review the Lauten Audio LA220. This is a large diaphragm FET condenser microphone, that is a utilitarian workhorse. It offers a smooth and even sound to it that works great for spoken word and singing as well as acoustic guitar. I also compare it to the Rode NT1, Neewer NW7000, Audio Technica AT2020, and Sennheiser MK4.

Wow - this has to be THE BEST review format video I have EVER EVER SEEN. Thank you for a) going back to the LA220 between each - and for comparing it to so many options. Really appreciate it!
I've become dependent on his Tuesday uploads regardless of whether or not he's reviewing something I have a specific interest in, i.e., handheld mics or whatever. I've found his content to be a nice little mood-lifting nugget of competence, entertainment, talent, competency and decency. Check out his "Bandrew says Podcast" channel for yet another really nice bit of weekly content from this guy. Here's my problem. The more I watch this channel, the harsher critic I become of most of the other gear reviewers. In the worst cases, I can think of a couple of them whom I can tell want desperately to the next Bandrew, and haven't yet found themselves. It can be painful to watch. God, this reads like he paid me! I need to get a hobby...
Agreed. I have a couple LA220's and have positive reviews for what use them on. However what I really want to mention is that this review format is really very good.
I really appreciate your review here. I must confess that I couldn't stop looking at the Manley Reference in the background there.
Same... She's a beaut!
Yes
😂😂😂
Dude, thanks for doing this! I asked you in a few other videos to review this and you actually did. DOPE!
Nice one! I've been following your channel to select the right audio device for my setup... Thanks for your videos!!!
great review, I have learned a lot from you and your reviews
Excellent review! I really loved the way you put this together!
I mean, these live vocal comparisons will(should) save people a lot of online review hassle. When you hear the one you're interested in, in a shootout, you can streamline your decision making process. You've saved me from a FEW mics i was sold on , based off of reviews and testimonials. Thanks my guy.
Really like the clarity on this. Just a really natural sound.
I am definitely interested in this mic. Good review video too
“Palate cleanser” @ 5:31 😂 oh we just love your reviews Bandrew. Thanks for all you do.
Proper, meaningful and clear review.
ur videos are really helpful. thanks
I've looked at this microphone a few times so it's nice to see a review of it. It sounds like a decent option to me.
All good. Love your table!!
I Just Got This Mic Today Thank You For This Vid Bro 🌻🌻🌻🖤🖤🖤
I really liked the fullness and smoothness
Hey Bandrew, love your reviews, love your beautiful singing. Can you make a video on how to do audio processing or at least suggest an audio processing program next video? Would appreciate it, keep the good reviews! :p
I was completely shocked when you went back to the same microphone again and again. Also it sounds really good.
Awsome Review. You are worth your weight in microphones.
Thanks for great review. I'd also like to see the review of it's bigger brother, LA-320 large condenser tube mic, please :)
Great review!
Really, really great review. And watch em all!
I have this Mic brand new in the box since Dec 2019 with no intentions to use it till now. Thanks for sharing...Peace 1
Hello, can you help me? I have Rode Procaster and Behringer Umc22. But i have environmental noise like PC's fan and my voice is muffled. What should i do? I want most clear voice.
Nowadays im looking to "Triton Audio
FetHead". But i think my audio interface is bad. Should i buy mixer or audio interface or fethead? I have a few models on my mind. Scarlett 2i2 or Behringer XENYX Q802USB. I will use only microphone so i dont need more channels.
A Motu M2 is a great interface for basically the same price as the scarlett 2i2 with slightly better preamps. If budget allows the SSL2 is fantastic and can drive any mic.
@@SleepyTimeTales I cant buy SSL2 in Turkey but i can buy Motu M2. I dont want
environmental noise like pc's fans and i want clear voice. Is Motu better than Scarlett 2i2?
@ it should pretty much the same price and I think it's slightly better. But Bandrew has a review, so worth a check. 🙂
@@SleepyTimeTales Thanks for help bro.
Just wanted to thank you for the superbly informative and entertaining videos. I bought a USB mic to help me make screencasts for my pupils here in the UK having to hastily teach myself voiceovers for various video lessons.
Your video on improving voice-over techniques was really helpful too. I bought the AKG C44 Lyra USB mic and your review was especially useful.
Unfortunately I can't stop watching your reviews now and started to drool over some $1600 dollar mic . I don't think it will improve my pupils' maths comprehension but they could be confused in style.
As a previous student that had to deal with shitty quality recorded lectures, it makes a big difference. The way I see it is the less you have to concentrate on someone's voice to understand them, the more you can concentrate on what they are talking about. You might be interested in having a Google of Nvidia rtx voice if you can't control your environment when recording.(uses machine learning to do noise rejection)
Nice video I and a new subscriber and enjoy as well as make tech content your channel is very good
I love that you compare almost to other, als low budget Mics (Neewer). Very good Video.

Hi Bandrew, first of all, your videos are super informative and enjoyable to watch! In the recommendation section you talk about microphones that have a "wow factor". Could you give me some examples of microphones you have tried that have that wow factor?
Hi ,i really love your channel, these reviews are really cool 🙂. Somtime could you make a review about the Boya BY-MM1+ , Boya BY-M1 PRO ? Those are budget mics, i'm wondering if they are any good 😃🤔
I ordered this mic today and after hearing how great it sounded on guitar...not twangy and ringy at all...just great tone...and on your voice it sounded like you could easily make some pro recordings
Thanks for another gr8 one. I just love Lauten Audio Clarion FC-357 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone. It sounds brilliant without any effects. And it like custom made for country music. Warmth is comparable to U87 which I own.
Which one you prefer out of the two?
Great channel...well done
I definitely preferred the Lauten LA-220 over the rest. In fact, I bought one today.
Thank you 😊
Hey Bandrew! Love your content! Do you think there will be a V2 version review coming any time soon? Also do you recommend this or the NT1 signature? Thanks!
Sounds like a idealized NT1. That is a good thing.
yeah u the Mic man officially. Every company should go through you. And I can't help but notice that Manley Mic in the background . . .!
This mic is really good for your voice.... especially after listening to your U87 review which made your voice sound quite thin.
Thoughts on the best all-a-rounder between the La 220 Vs the Re 320? Listening to your breakdowns I’m actually leaning towards the La 220 but I’ve had the Electro Voice Re320 on my wish list for a while now and it’s currently on sale... Actually I thing they both are.
That was horrifically useful!
great buy, set up was very easy, Awesome!
Sounds really nice on voice.
Can you review the LTC encore in the future? It's my first microphone and I just want to see how it stacks up to mics like the Blue Yeti and Samson Meteor since it's price is in between the two aforementioned mics.
Great stuff. It sounds good. . For singing and spoken word how would you consider the Lewitt 440 compared with this compared (for your voice) . I'm down to Aston origin, Lewitt 440, la 220 on my short list. {I'm thinking the la220 might be closest to NT1 in terms of sound)
Thank you so much for this review. I think you gave every single example I could have ever asked for. 100/10 👏🏻🙏🏻
I am buying the mic now 👌
What I find interesting is, their 320 has the same exact frequency response chart, you just get added warmth and softness because it is a vacuum tube mic. If I can get the same sound without an additional power supply, the 220 is good enough for me.
The LA-220 makes a decent overhead mic for drums too for not too much money if you use 2 or 3 of them (miles cheaper than U87’s).
Hi! I'm interested to see your review about AKG D7 and AKG C7. And also a versus series between C7 to Beta87a, and AKG D7 versus Sennheiser e935. Thankyou.
Nice guitar! Lauten was much warmer than the cheaper mics. Nt1 is close but it completely died on me so I won't get another. Yes la220 is darker and it has a bit of an antique sound. It would pair well for a minimal set up with just the la220 for acoustic and vocals and an sm57 for loud sources and amps.
No Cherry MX Blues? I'm devastated. Okay maybe not. Keep up the good work. Would like to see reviews of the new Mackie EleMent Series
Seems like a real workhorse, with a pleasant "vintage" sound for spoken word . I would have liked to hear a comparison with the Shure SM27, which I consider the king of proximity effect, for that "Voice of God" sound you mentioned.
If you're taking requests, I'm super interested in hearing your thoughts on the Neat Worker Bee. Since the King Bee has gone up in price (although still a bargain) I'm thinking it might be the best mic under $100 right now but I don't think I've seen any reviews besides Sound Speeds', and he liked it a lot.
You always remind me so much of Lester from GTA
Do you have a music channel btw? that shit would actually blow up
Have you thought about taking a look at the Rode K2? Or has it been mentioned in an earlier video?
Planning to buy my first microphone, and am new to these reviews. Really appreciate your reviews. So what microphone would help someone enter Nirvana or a new plane of existence?
Hey the podcast you did with gaming careers was great what if you guys did another one with alpha gaming that'll be an interesting one
what about a comparison between audio technica at2035 and the Lauten Audio LA-220 pls bro
and what mic do you recommend for proximity effect, i love that sound..
I am wondering between mic NT1 OR NT2A, I would like to know your opinion to compare, I do not need the pad or hf, but if I know the sound quality, the price in my country is the same for both microphones, 270 euros
Okay, about to buy a mic. Should I go for the Lauten LA220, AKG C214, Rode NT2-A, SE Electronics SE 2300 or Lewitt LCT 440 PURE? These five cost about the same, which one would you pick? I just need it for vocals and singing vocals and maybe once in a blue moon, I'll need it in front of a guitar amp. Can't go higher in price. Thanks!
Please do a review on the Audio-Technica ATR-2500X microphone that released recently.
Can you do a review for the Aston origin condenser mic? ♥️
There will be a Bandrew. And there was a Bandrew. And he was the best mic reviewer
All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again.
Hey Bandrew, what would your recommendation be for someone looking to invest in $500 into a mic/pre-amp/boom arm for streaming/broadcasting? I don't feel I need a mixer for a single PC setup, but I'd love your opinion (whether to invest in a more expensive mic with a pre-amp/a mid-range mic with a mixer)
I'd recommend a Shure SM48, Native Instruments Komplete Audio 1, and Samson MBA-28/38/48, and spend the rest on treatment.
Alternaves to SM48 include Behringer XM8500, Samson Q2U, Shure SM58, Sennheiser e835, Audio Technica AT2005USB, Audio Technica ATR-2100xUSB, or a used Audio Technica ATR-2100USB. Alternatives to the NI KA 1 include Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD, Audient Evo 4, MOTU M2, etc. We recommend audio interfaces here.
If you have very harsh sibilants. this mic is PERFECT as it controls high frequencies very well. This is a creamy mic vs crispy.
Bandew testing mics again, with a pizza on the brain! Thanks for all the great advice, now let's go and find a slice! Man if I could only sing.
Sounds great on your voice, not bright, very natural! -- Love your review style! -- Thank goodness -- NO Stickers :)!!
I agree with that last bit (and all of it, of course)
Just wanna ask you about the Scarlet splotches 3rd gen How is for podcasting
What are your thoughts on it in comparison to the Stellar X2 Vintage that you reviewed?
Hi Bandrew, I’m violinist playing in chamber music (violin, cello, piano) and I’m looking for a usb mic or iOS mic to plug to my iPhone or iPad good enough for those instruments, which one would you recommend ? Thank you in advance,
Boris
The LA-220 sounds great on your voice. The clarity is fantastic, and it compares favorably to the other mics in the review. (Although the NT1 has a warmer, darker, smoother tone.)
Only clarify doenot matter. CM should be flawless, warn and naturally sounding.
Idk man the NT1 is the opposite of smooth in my opinion. As an engineer I’ve had to work with recordings with an NT1 and the sibilance is absolutely brutal.
@@PhoctorDill On the NT1-A, agreed. But the NT1 isn't overly sibilant (especially the 4th Generation, which is the one I used to own.)
Could you do a review of the Audio Technica AT4060, please?
Does the Quality/cost make a difference in the signal chain ie. Mogami vs Amazon basic, HOSA, Cable Matters ect?
Hey! I have a request, can you do a review of Tascam 16x8 audio interface?
Hey podcastage (Bandrew) ...
Please do a Shure sm58 vs senheiser e835 vs senheiser e845 vs shure sm57
Love from India....
6:27 TALLENT
Actually tried searching the lyrics to this to see if it was a real song...
I am surprised at how good the at2020 sounded in this test, I usually feel like it can have a harsh quality to it
I wonder why you haven't reviewed any of the Audix mics, USA company and excellent (maybe the best) stage mics for loud gigs (OM7 is the king). Would be interesting to hear their condenser mics tested plus their are soon to release a bunch of new products.
Great review! thanks! What kind of anti pop filter are you using ?
Hakan P110
Do you have any music online? I can really see you making some awesome songs.
What do you think about the Lauten LA320? what would you recommend for a condenser around 500?
I love my AT 2020 and this definitely helped me with my decision. I do have a question though: as a person who wears dentures I have a lot of sibilance. I'm looking for a mic that would cover that up some. Do you have any recommendations in t his price range?
Check out Oktava MK-319 perhaps? That and the 219 have dips in the sibilance range...👍
i like the rode nt1 best then la-220 second
Yo just a quick question... Can i use a 1/4 inch jack to usb cable as an audio output for a mixer???
That guitar break out , fucking 🔥🔥🔥
What kind of pop filter is that? I've never seen that before.
Please make a video on mxl V63m and mxl V67g and tell which is best mxl 770 vs mxl V63m vs mxl V67g vs Audio Technica AT2020 pleaseeeee?? And please tell which mic mxl 770 vs mxl V63m vs mxl V67g vs Audio Technica AT2020 is best for rap vocals????
Can you please review the trust gxt 252 emita plus
this mic really suits your voice
you are a saint
That's a pretty sick mic for the price. I'd be interested in hearing it back to back with some more expensive large diaphragm condensers that are known for being dark/flat sounding. I've found that most of the samples I've heard where electric guitar doesn't sound like a chainsaw are from mics that cost $1000+.
It sounds relly good.
Please review purple panda lav mic
Is this good for hip hop or melodic rap?? Im hearing so many mixed reviews..
Can you review the TONOR TC2030
Great review Bandrew as usual. I had to laugh when you said: "I found it useful on everything that I threw it at". Perhaps a freudian slip? LOL Stay safe........... 👍👍😂😂🎤🎤😉😉
Wondering if its just as good as a Mini k47 sounded pretty close.
Can you do a fifine k678 review
I have compared your voice in several clips directly ..even "blind". (using Genelec monitors)... This mic sounds better than the u87. Better than the Lauten Atlantis as well. Atlantis has a bit more "focused depth" or let's say "class" but it makes your voice sound nasally. The Lauten LA 220 sounds really great. Better than AT4033a on your voice as well. I really like it. I've just ordered the Lauten LA 220. Let's see how it compares to the United Twin87. I have a slight idea that it even might sound better. The Twin87 comes really close to the Neumann u87..not exactly, but it really has that kind of character of u87 style......can't wait to test the Lauten LA 220 (which as far as I can judge from online shootouts sounds better than the LA 320 (tube version) as well). I will try it on a Twin-Finity 710 (Mix of Trans. and Tube 50/50 fantastic preamp)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Really well thought out and I look forward to seeing what your findings are.
@@Podcastage I tested the LA 220. It was ok. I gave Lauten another try - ordered the Clarion. It was really fine but it had too little body and low-end for my taste. Got the Atlantis: amazing. At the same time I also tried the Sontronics Aria. Atlantis and Aria are really really close. Both great vocal mics. But at last the Atlantis is the winner. Definitely the best mic I have used so far. I will keep it. Here is my ranking of some of the mics I have tried during the last year on vocals:
1. Lauten Atlantis
2. Sontronics Aria and Microtech Gefell m930
3. Lauten Clarion
4. Neumann TLM 107
5. Neumann TLM 49
6. United Twin87
7. Neumann TLM 102
Shure KSM44, SM7b, Soyuz, 013 fet , Sony C-100 couldn't convince me. The United 47fet was quite good. Even better than their Twin87.
I think the Sontronics Aria (and Mercury) as well as the United Twin87 might be interesting mics for this channel.
Not sure where to place the AT4050 and AT4047 (and AT4033a...the only one of the three I haven't tried yet...but it somehow turns me on). AT mics are somehow just something different. I really like them but in the end I think they're not in the league of the first 5 I mentioned above.
Hmm...That schock mount looks like the same one that came with my Behringer B-1. Coincidence? I think not.
Just bought two, so their investment in sending you one is paying off!
