Lauten Audio LA-220 Condenser Mic Review / Test (Compared to Rode NT1, AT2020, NW7000)

  • Today I review the Lauten Audio LA220. This is a large diaphragm FET condenser microphone, that is a utilitarian workhorse. It offers a smooth and even sound to it that works great for spoken word and singing as well as acoustic guitar. I also compare it to the Rode NT1, Neewer NW7000, Audio Technica AT2020, and Sennheiser MK4.

I've become dependent on his Tuesday uploads regardless of whether or not he's reviewing something I have a specific interest in, i.e., handheld mics or whatever. I've found his content to be a nice little mood-lifting nugget of competence, entertainment, talent, competency and decency. Check out his "Bandrew says Podcast" channel for yet another really nice bit of weekly content from this guy. Here's my problem. The more I watch this channel, the harsher critic I become of most of the other gear reviewers. In the worst cases, I can think of a couple of them whom I can tell want desperately to the next Bandrew, and haven't yet found themselves. It can be painful to watch. God, this reads like he paid me! I need to get a hobby...

When you hear the one you're interested in, in a shootout, you can streamline your decision making process. You've saved me from a FEW mics i was sold on , based off of reviews and testimonials. Nowadays im looking to "Triton Audio

Just wanted to thank you for the superbly informative and entertaining videos. I bought a USB mic to help me make screencasts for my pupils here in the UK having to hastily teach myself voiceovers for various video lessons.
Your video on improving voice-over techniques was really helpful too. I bought the AKG C44 Lyra USB mic and your review was especially useful.
Unfortunately I can't stop watching your reviews now and started to drool over some $1600 dollar mic . I don't think it will improve my pupils' maths comprehension but they could be confused in style.

As a previous student that had to deal with shitty quality recorded lectures, it makes a big difference. The way I see it is the less you have to concentrate on someone's voice to understand them, the more you can concentrate on what they are talking about. You might be interested in having a Google of Nvidia rtx voice if you can't control your environment when recording.(uses machine learning to do noise rejection)

What I find interesting is, their 320 has the same exact frequency response chart, you just get added warmth and softness because it is a vacuum tube mic. If I can get the same sound without an additional power supply, the 220 is good enough for me.

Seems like a real workhorse, with a pleasant "vintage" sound for spoken word . I would have liked to hear a comparison with the Shure SM27, which I consider the king of proximity effect, for that "Voice of God" sound you mentioned.
If you're taking requests, I'm super interested in hearing your thoughts on the Neat Worker Bee. Since the King Bee has gone up in price (although still a bargain) I'm thinking it might be the best mic under $100 right now but I don't think I've seen any reviews besides Sound Speeds', and he liked it a lot.

Alternaves to SM48 include Behringer XM8500, Samson Q2U, Shure SM58, Sennheiser e835, Audio Technica AT2005USB, Audio Technica ATR-2100xUSB, or a used Audio Technica ATR-2100USB. Alternatives to the NI KA 1 include Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD, Audient Evo 4, MOTU M2, etc. We recommend audio interfaces here.

That's a pretty sick mic for the price. I'd be interested in hearing it back to back with some more expensive large diaphragm condensers that are known for being dark/flat sounding. I've found that most of the samples I've heard where electric guitar doesn't sound like a chainsaw are from mics that cost $1000+.

I have compared your voice in several clips directly ..even "blind". (using Genelec monitors)... This mic sounds better than the u87. Better than the Lauten Atlantis as well. Atlantis has a bit more "focused depth" or let's say "class" but it makes your voice sound nasally. The Lauten LA 220 sounds really great. Better than AT4033a on your voice as well. I really like it. I've just ordered the Lauten LA 220. Let's see how it compares to the United Twin87. I have a slight idea that it even might sound better. The Twin87 comes really close to the Neumann u87..not exactly, but it really has that kind of character of u87 style......can't wait to test the Lauten LA 220 (which as far as I can judge from online shootouts sounds better than the LA 320 (tube version) as well). I will try it on a Twin-Finity 710 (Mix of Trans. and Tube 50/50 fantastic preamp)

@@Podcastage I tested the LA 220. It was ok. I gave Lauten another try - ordered the Clarion. It was really fine but it had too little body and low-end for my taste. Got the Atlantis: amazing. At the same time I also tried the Sontronics Aria. Atlantis and Aria are really really close. Both great vocal mics. But at last the Atlantis is the winner. Definitely the best mic I have used so far. I will keep it. Here is my ranking of some of the mics I have tried during the last year on vocals:
      1. Lauten Atlantis
      2. Sontronics Aria and Microtech Gefell m930
      3. Lauten Clarion
      4. Neumann TLM 107
      5. Neumann TLM 49
      6. United Twin87
      7. Neumann TLM 102
Shure KSM44, SM7b, Soyuz, 013 fet , Sony C-100 couldn't convince me. The United 47fet was quite good. Even better than their Twin87.
I think the Sontronics Aria (and Mercury) as well as the United Twin87 might be interesting mics for this channel.
Not sure where to place the AT4050 and AT4047 (and AT4033a...the only one of the three I haven't tried yet...but it somehow turns me on). AT mics are somehow just something different. I really like them but in the end I think they're not in the league of the first 5 I mentioned above.

Hmm...That schock mount looks like the same one that came with my Behringer B-1. Coincidence? I think not.
