The best spot I've found is near Rhodes, just behind the horse fences (dealers). It's a shallow inlet on Flatiron Lake, with sturgeon spawning sometimes 2 at a time. The fish normally flee to deeper water, but here they just mill around the shallows, often swimming right back to you. Easy pickings, especially with the varmint rifle.
I really enjoy fishing in RDR2O. I made a fishing outfit much like yours that I keep on my horse. Any time I join a fishing event, I make sure to don my outfit first. I am hoping at some point, R* lets us fish from boats (like you can in storyline). Maybe we could buy a boat that we could then spawn any time we were near a body of water. Besides that, I wish we could "Break Down" the larger fish like the Muskie & Gar instead of having to keep the entire fish.

Lagras and Flat Iron Lake are my favorite spots, both of them have a big amount of fishes around and Lagras is even better when you hunt while fishing.

Its the triangular cove on the shore of Flat Iron Lake. Can catch Steelhead and Bass nearly every cast with a lake lure, and the odd sturgeon spawns there too. less than a 2min ride to the Rhodes butcher and if you set camp in the heartlands a max 5min ride from camp.
I'm extremely surprised you didn't have the waterfall North of Roanoke Valley it's technically a river but it's big enough where at the certain point of the waterfall it could be considered a lake because it narrows
How do I change the reel-in control when fishing? When fishing tonight I noticed that the reel-in is no longer the square button but has changed to pushing R3 in a circular motion - I think. I haven't really got the hang of it yet. I am on PS4. Update: Other site said it has always been R3. Was always just square button for me until a couple of days ago.

That small pond where the heavens gate people's cabin is really nice too. Don't know if fish in there are good but such a nice area, don't matter.

For me it was always the rotating joystick. I think you can change it in keymapping though.

It could be that you are either not close enough to the water, or are in it too deep. That will prevent you from fishing.
