I just set up chromecast ultra and it gives you way more commercials and longer commercials per hour vs the old chromecast. It sucks in that way.
Can't wait to start using the Chromecast Ultra for our 4K relaxation videos and other content. This means I can use my big computer monitor as my TV instead of owning a TV. Anyone else planning to use a 4K screen with the Chromecast Ultra instead of having a proper TV? I never watch broadcast TV, only video downloads and streaming. Will I miss SMART TV features or is this minimal setup enough? Wondering I have overlooked anything as it has been so long since I have owned a TV.

My biggest concern is what happens to all the movies and TV shows I already own in Google Play Movies? Are they going to automatically be upgraded to 4K or do I need to repurchase the same movies and TV shows in order to get the 4K resolution?
Will be interesting to see what happens here. If Google's 4K movies use the new H.265 (HEVC) codec or their own VP-9, then file sizes don't need to change too much, despite the resolution being 4 times bigger.

Can anyone explain what this does for example if i have a downloaded movie on my mac will it stream to my tv to watch on a bigger screen?
what about audio? used to have a nexus tv thing, movies on play were not 5.1, also, i was getting stereo sound out of netflix. I sold the device. Will this new UC send 5.1 sound to my home theater?
I just tried opening a H.265 MP4 video on Chrome, but I could only hear it (blank screen). Please tell me H.265 (HEVC) codec will be supported by Chromecast Ultra and Chrome. Surely it will be essential for many people to keep the file sizes down and avoid buffering.
Dunno if you're already bought one, but can personally confirm that it supports native HEVC decoding. I use BubbleUPnP on my Android phone and the Castnow command line Node client on PC to stream HEVC content to my CCU. So much cheaper than the new Nvidia Shield. Maybe not as cheap as some of those inexpensive Chinese streaming boxes, but it's also got Cast capability, so it's the best of both world, IMHO.

PDG I heard the 2nd gen chromecast has faster loading times and I guess since this is 4k, it will support 1080p60 hopefully which is worthy enough, I dont know much about HDR but maybe that will work on 1080p too?

Well, there are some benefits of getting the new one. For one, the ability to stream in 4k. The first gen only goes up to 1080p but it still looks nice. Also, the first generation only supports 2.4 ghz bandwidth. If a slight difference in resolution and speed is worth it to you, then you should go for the new one.

I bought that cheap, on the internet, from China, couple of years ago.. It works fine, but only with old Android, cause Google blocked that option in the newer ones ;) They just build it a bit better and prettier, to sell it for much, much, much more.

MSG 4K is not available where I live, I pay the fastest internet connection available and it's still too slow for 4K. there are other raspberry pi alternatives with 4K and the Xiaomi mibox (also with 4K and HDR) is the same price ($69) and comes with Android TV.

I live in the deepest part of the US AND I can Streak 4k with out any BUFFERING now that they bought out the company now it's even more FASTER

+PureBlooded Yeah... why not? They all have. This is just an upgraded one of the already released 2nd gen. They look exactly the same.
I don't get why people think it will be a problem that it hangs, or that it will damage the HDMI port somehow.
It is really light, and HDMI is a big port that is very sturdy, so no problem at all with it hanging.
Also it's better that it hangs, over the 1st gen which was just a stuck. TV manufacturers sometimes have complete regards that design TV's in the placement of HDMI slots. Chrome cast being flat and hanging gives you option to maneuver it however needed to fit wherever the plug is. Especially if you have your TV wall mounted.

+PureBlooded No problem. It isn't. Honestly nothing to worry about at all. HDMI is a large port, it's very difficult to damage them, and if you did somehow it had to be pretty violent haha.
Chromecast definitely worth it. I use it every single day.

Yeah pretty much. CZcams even on iOS will have a little chromecast logo to stream it. There is also Apps in the market for streaming movies from your device, or photos. There is also games in the market where multiple people can connect to the chromecast at same time and everyone uses there phone as a controller.

They should have kept the low price and added 4k. Then is first came out I got a few gen 1 for only $20 to $25 plus $5 credit (they never honored!!). $70 is to much, I would rather buy a smart TV.

Useless if you don't have fast FiOS (optical fiber) Internet speeds, a much better choice is a Xbox One S which can play UHD Bu-ray discs
