I once happened to pass out after giving blood when I was a high school student. It was an exceptionally hot summer afternoon. I was after it, eating (back in the days, the red cross offered a hotdog with a piece of bread and a coke in exchange for the blood) when I noticed how my appetite has gone. Then I noticed how the otherwise not so colorful waiting room is so grey. Then my ears started to ring while I started seeing sparking spots. At that point I remember I made a remark about it to bystanders that something happened. Then came the tunnel vision, the ringing in my ears tuned into rumbling and I realized I can't think. The last part only took seconds before I passed out. So yeah, DCS pretty much nails it with that LOC.
I once got close to passing out when I was very ill. It was the middle of the night and I needed to go to the bathroom. When I decided to turn back to my room, I started to get dizzy. I kept touching the walls and other stuff and then my already weakened vision from the darkness started to become even darker. I just kept standing there for a few minutes until my parents came out of bed and guided me to my room and we sat down on my bed. Easily one of the scariest experiences of my life.
The time when I was the most sick came during college: I got bronchitis. I went to urgent care, they diagnosed me, and I got a shot of antibiotics in the rear. I looked back and saw the smallest bead of my own blood. The effect was immediate: wooziness, tunnel vision, I made a remark about it and the doc had me lay down on the table. We harvest game in my family and process meats, but this one time, it got me good.
Typical vasovagal syncope, when the body detects vein puncture and blood loss. Squeezing the leg muscles helps with the pressure drop but the best is to immediately lie down so that blood does not need to work against gravity to reach the brain. If only nurses taking blood were trained in the human biology relating to their job. Then they wouldn't do an idiotic thing like walking off to find a bed when you say you're about to pass out, and then come back minutes later utterly surprised that you're unconscious on the floor in a pool of sweat.
i passed out 2 times in my life. once infront of my toilet (after getting up quickly within an hours long gaming session). And the other time i was sick, had fever, went to the doctor. And on checkin i passed out on the floor. Hitting my head, causing cerebral hemorrhage. Both happend in milliseconds. I can not remember that there was a greyish view before. The time from full awarness to unconsciousness is not even a blink of an eye.
As an officer-cadet in the 80’s, I went in the back seat of a CF5 (Canadian) for a low-level training mission. It was summer and I was wearing everything: long johns, tshirt, turtleneck, flight suit, flight jacket, flotation vest and g-suit. Plus helmet of course. So off we go, up, down, up down. …and it got so hot with the sun throught the canopy……I got violently sick at some point and puked my guts out for quite a long time while I could hear the pilot in my headset yielling “turn off your mike, turn off your mike!!” Being French Canadian and with my English being very soso, I kept wondering “who the hell is this Mike guy?” I finally clued in and turned my mike off. The pilot must have been quite upset because he knew I was pretty sick back there and upon returning to base, he did not one, not two but SEVEN touch and go’s……I kid you not, I kept looking at those yellow and black handles and they looked so good…I came that close to ejecting as I just wanted the ride from hell to stop. In retrospect, I’m glad I didn’t because that would surely have prematurely ended my young military career……
The CF-18 pilots wear the same outfit going up North over water. It reminds me the kid from Christmas Story where the mother made him wear this good awful snow suit, scarf, hat, thick gloves, etc.
There is a story which, as they say, happened during MiG 25 flight tests. The plane was used to test the autopilot for the Buran space shuttle at high altitudes and supersonic speeds. The canopy accidentally came off. The pilot suffered a hypobaric strike - his blood virtually boiled in his body. By an inhuman effort he activated RTB autopilot and the plane landed. The cabin was badly damaged and burnt by the air flow, side parts of the seat were cut off, some parts of the pilot's arms were cut off too.
@@sfctw1 I mean... that'll fuck you up regardless of if you're DIRECTLY exposed to the air. But I think it's important to remember that they have a bunch of survival gear on. Frostbite won't be instant with how thin the air is up there.

I'm surprised the canopy didn't strike the tail. There was an incident involving F-16D AF #83-1184 of the 62d FS that has similar scenario, luckily it happens during maintenance. Some ground crew accidentally pulled the wrong handle, causing the canopy to jettison and damage the tail. 8 years before the mishap, that same airframe has "The Best Maintenance Squadron in the Air National Guard" marked on its tail (although at that time she was 184th FS bird). I was gonna put source on the comment but it looks like CZcams doesn't like link.
We had an F/A-18 being towed into the hanger with the canopy up. Hit an overhead obstruction and pushed the canopy rearwards, damaging the airframe, rear panels, and the canopy.
Quite interesting;) The pilots are wearing pressure suits, masks with the oxygen system ... The only problem with the F-16 is the fact that after tearing off the fairing, nothing protects the pilot from the pressing air. In the case of the F / A-18, F-14, F-15, in theory, in a similar situation, the only threat may be the temperature because the fairings are in place and protect against direct impact of the air momentum.
Correct. Any aircraft intended to be operated above 60,000 requires the pilot to have a pressure suite. It's too bulky and heavy for combat so pilots must stay below 60,000 Incase of a loss of pressurization.
@@ChiccinTendies Yep. Fighter pilots do NOT have pressure suits. They wear flight suits and oxygen masks that are not going to be helpful because the fit against the face is close but it's not THAT close.
