Flight Simulator - How Realistic is the Base Game's World?

- Took me a while to get around to it, but I've finally got around to breaking Flight Simulator and criticising all the minor quibbles this otherwise impressive world-simulator contains.

6:22 There are like 10 free updates in the marketplace where you can download 3d data for cities, like London in this case. The whole city of London gets replaced with photogrammetry and carefully handcrafted landmarks in one of those updates.
Hope he makes a followup showcasing those too
Yea, he's missing the world updates. London and Cologne are very well detailed in those.
Microsoft should really push at least the photogrametry to the base game because probably a lot of people are missing out on those.
i assume the title did not include basegame when you made this comment then?
From what he showed it looked like the game when it first launched. We've had several world updates since then that dramatically improve the visual quality and are basically a must.
Seeing as how the title says base game im guessing a non based game video is on its way
one of my favourite bits of scenery was in my city of Melbourne Australia, at the release of the game, one random house in the northern suburbs had a typo in the coding and instead of being single story it was something like 200 stories so there was just this random spire which was dubbed The Melbourne Spire. our state premier at the time (Daniel Andrews) was infamous and in the news a lot because of our strict covid lockdowns at the time, but people started calling it "Daniel Andrews Lair" or "Dictator Dan's Penthouse" which was a funny bit of local banter i thought
Lmao. I never heard that one. Dan Andrews copped it during Covid. Deservedly so.
tried landing a cesna on top of it
Dictator Dan's Penthouse 🤣🤣🤣
Getting called a dictator for trying to protect people? Wow💀💀💀
@@aturchomicz821 Some things are more important than safety
That shot of the camera going down to the river, then suddenly there's a tree there and the music syncs up to that... that was really cool.

There is an issue with the video, a ton of cities, like Cologne, do have photogrammetry, but you have to download the free world updates from the store.
Even some small cities like Pamplona in Spain have this feature.
Otherwise great vid ;)
Cologne
Would love to see another video of this with photogrammetry on
“How realistic is the base game”.
I think the video detailed exactly what the title said it would- the base game
@@AirSpanii He changed the title after people pointed this out

I'm curious if you downloaded the free world updates? Those usually add a lot more detail to cities, and they have indeed done a Britain one. Salisbury is all there!

I thought he was going to mention World Updates when he mentioned Italy but nope. I swear London in my game looked much better than this, but I cant blame Philip for that since the game is really weird and often doesn't work in ways you expect a modern game to work

@@duskobjelajac5122 until a few weeks ago I thought World updates were automatically installed, because of the name "world update", yaknow.
One of the world updates has 3d scanned Central London with accurate buildings, it looks pretty fantastic. You have to install them through a menu in-game that I can't remember how to find, a lot of major cities have got 3d scanning updates since release.
making entire world in flight simulator had to require enormous effort from developers. They really did amazing job.
so much so, that some guy mad a mod to use google maps data, and it improved it
I wish the same effort could go to make a decent flight model that comes close to X- Plane
@@NonsensicalSpudz taking a existing game and modding it is not even close to making a entire game
@@NicOz42 Turns out that Xplane 12's flight model is not as good as MSFS, there are a bunch of youtube videos comparing them and xplane no longer has the edge on the actual flight model anymore. 🙃
@@jamesd6952 not true. Just do aerobatics in both sims and you'll see a clear winner. Even spins are bad in MSFS.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is so cool. I don't care about flying a plane but
simulating the whole world like this is just super dope
thats the point. its just eye candy
well... you are missing out, if you had tried fs2020 with a virtual reality headset and a flight stick on a decent pc i can guarantee that you would no longer not care about flying!
i am no flight junkie but i do have a thing for simulators... and fs2020 is special.
my favorite way of introducing people to VR for the first time is with fs2020, i give them an easy plane to fly like the cessna, i start them off in the air in a place they know well, i set it to dusk or dawn, with heavy rain and scattered fog, preferably near the coast as the low sun reflecting of the water makes for some breathtaking views if you dont get lost in the fog... then their challenge is to stay alive and find the local airport to land.
judging by the amount of wows, oh my gods and the occasional very intense grunting sounds followed by a couple very loud OH SHITS and then can i try agains... people are into it.
i often find myself completely loosing track of place and time, once i was just gonna do a quick test of a new plane (the grumman goose), i ended up flying clear across Iceland and back enjoying the heck out of the views, along the way i did notice a smoky smell and actually heard a siren at one time... but didnt think much of it, i was busy.
when i finally landed back in Reykjavik and took my headset off there was flashing blue lights lighting up my entire apartment, i looked out the window and saw cop cars and firetrucks everywhere, and a 3 story warehouse building on fire with the roof caving in maybe 250-350 feet away, turns out i was in the closest apartment that had not been evacuated... fs2020 in VR is VERY immersive! 👀
@@ralphbooger4756 wow seems cool, what vr headset do you use ?
@@Issoulachancla54
odyssey plus, rift s, reverb g2...
there are better headsets but the g2 is probably the best for the price, the more resolution the more it takes to run it.
if you are considering one do make sure its ipd range matches yours... (distanse between your eyes) or it can be a very uncomfortable experience.
@@ralphbooger4756 I'm still waiting for a flight simulator with a stunning graphics in VR and a very high frame rate. Moreover more realism in the communications and no inoperative button inside the cockpit. This 2020, I must admit, it's something new compared to the previous versions but still .....
As the current Mayor of Truro thank you for visiting Truro, I tried playing the flight Sim to have a look at Truro basically I crashed every time I try to leave Newquay. Now you've given me part of my life back to not bother for the next few years. Keep up the awesome videos.
@@2kliksphilip Indeed love that.
It feel like you could talk about the very impressive and mind-blowing Space Engine after this! Once again I am entertained by your dive into world generation.
Thank you for making this video, it really satisfied my curiosity. This IS the way I would have used MSF if I had bought it in 2020, because I've never been much into flying, but I always had an admiration for new technologies and a weird fascination with games set in real life places. Unfortunately, I still couldn't run it on my computer and check it out for myself, so I'm glad that we got a good old kliksphilip video talking about everything that really had me on the hook about this game.
I'm super happy you did this vid because I was legit wondering the same thing looking at its steam page
I think you haven't downloaded all the free(!) world updates? Because a lot of the places you have shown, look amazing with them. They've done like 10 World updates, check em out!
amazing video as always!
as others have mentioned, you should do a small update video on this with the free world update dlcs installed (from the ingame store). theyve done them for several places including some in the uk and germany, so places like london and cologne should look at least somewhat better

It'll be interesting to see what QOL updates they'll do with their anniversary update coming November, with it they play on adding helicopters. It makes me wonder if they have improved the scans and details of the world to match the closer viewing experience
No, it won't change much. For that you'd need something like what Google demonstrated - making 3D cities from street view imagery.
@@rkan2 that is literally what flight simulator does.
but it uses bing maps. which has allot less data then google earth. but it does have locations photographed by aircraft instead of satellite.
so cities which have aircraft photography in bing maps, look the best in flight simulator. just fly over Seattle for a good example. i believe its currently the most detailed city in the Database.

I really liked the delivery of the line at 3:04. you can hear your smile.
I checked out my homestead once. While it couldn't have any idea what the buildings might look like, they were exactly the same shape and size, except vertically, so the barn was depicted as a ginormous apartment block. What was also fun was that every church was like a cathedral.
this is awesome!
This is truly amazing 😅
that opening is full of suspense though lol, you keep flying left and more left.
The song that starts at 05:00 is very reminiscent of the main theme of The Grand Budapest Hotel. Made me feel bubbly inside :)
What I like about flight simulator is that it lets me LARP crashing a plane into my workplace
3:05 That caught me off guards I laughed way too hard😂
Nice video!
I said this at the time of Flight Sim's launch and I'll say it again - This game is nothing short of an achievement software!
Tbh I don't think it is that amazing at the end. All this data was available and doable 10 yeara ago - someone just had to put the monry and work in to it. Don't get me wrong - I'm grateful they did. However all that previous sims were really missing was trees and houses added on top of their 2D satellite imagery , perhaps with a bit of blending. Photorealistic addons for whole countries were already a thing 15 years back too - though mostly manual work.

The most unbelievable part about this is that you actually visited Truro. I spent years of my life in that cathedral, haha
Valve even needs to fix flight simulators issues. They never gets a break.
And what does Valve have to do with any of this?
The "sprite trees" are known as "imposters" in 3d modeling and game dev
ඞ
that is an interesting fact
ඞ
As soon as I heard you mention Salisbury cathedral I knew that joke was coming 😂
this is good content thank you kliks
5:34 "Valve pls fix"
6:19 they did multiple world updates over the past 1 and a half years or so, and currently they're on the like 8-11th one. in London more of these buildings are here now and i think that whole area uses a 3d scan now with the taller buildings being models. but you have to download the update packs from the store, they are free but using them all obviously makes the game size larger. so i think thats why they gave peopel the option to not download them. they're separated by general countries in the world. Tokyo looks crazy (i have now leanred that one of the top few comments already said this more condensed oops)
Omg, thank you! Just got the game recently xD
wow, i like those sprite trees actually,
its like doom but 32 sides, looks really cool
like a new mix of 2d and 3d
There is an easier way to do the freecam things that doesn't involve AS many keyboard shortcuts, just move your mouse towards the top of the screen, in the menu that appears open the camera tab and from there you can change your drone speed etc with sliders if I remember that part correctly.
You know what i used to do. When i was trying and learning IFR and the how to engage the whole autopilot. I did longer flights and then i realised that they do take very long and it's kind of boring with the autopilot on, so there i was stuck in the cockpit with my VR gogglles. So at some point i was using the camera drone and because the 'camera drone' is attached to the airplane, its like flying (like superman style flying), i could go higher/lower/forward/back, but you would be moving with the plane. So in the end i'm just flying through the clouds and watching the landscape pass by. Hearing the wind, instead of the airplane, it's magical. The first time i went like this through a cloud, i actually opened my mouth, wanting to breath the cloud.. lol.. Vr is just awesome.. ;) Anyway, beats sitting in the cockpit looking at clouds.. 😅😅
Man I was really hoping for a "Have fun!" in the end :D
5:56 - this is probably so people don't feel the urge to crash planes into them.
Its so impressive that all of this detail is even in a flight sim
3:44
That's my favourite scene from The Italian Job
its pretty cool that bohemia interactive simulations has a procedurally generated 1:1 scale planet that pulls from real world data
As people have pointed out the official expansions, if you play on PC there are also tons of mods that add in assets and fixes for local areas overlooked by the devs out of necessity.
Finding you 8 years ago was the best thing to come out of my CSGO addiction
Wow! What an acomplishment this game is! Its crazy that this even runs on home computers!
"Flight sim thinks the world is round" you got me there 🤣
You should download the world updates they have. It adds so much more detail
the reason for the lack of real building is because it was based on Bing Maps (yknow microsoft) and not Google Maps (which has more detailed 3d scan). But there is a mod where you can use Google maps and the difference in quality is STUNNING
Until the America update, the Washington Monument was a giant rectangle in the sky.
That block of flats over Plymouth Lido feels more like a prediction than a projection...
I remember playing this game when it came out, it was quite something with tMe janky auto buildings. The Washington monument because the Washington Skyscraper, the Great Wall of China because the Not so Great line of houses, and going to the dead sea which is below sea level you found a giant invisible floor floating above the sea. Very fun game though and flying with a controller is really easy if you turn off damage and everything.
You should have mentioned that slew, and Showcase Mode (Drone) can be keybound to your flight yoke. This makes them extremely easy to use. The sim accepts multiple definitions for the same key. And it figures out what mode you are in all by itself. This even works on the axis controls like the yoke itself. Some CZcamsrs show their bindings for this and how to do it. I have it this way and it works.
You can insert coordinates in the search box. So you can find a location of google maps, copy the coordinates, and then input them in MSFS and it will place you at exactly that location.
Oh, and there is a mod that will replace all satellite images from Bing with Google Maps. Some places in the world look better, some worse. All the buildings will stay the same though
Haven’t heard anyone else mention Wells on youtube. Best city you’ve never been to 😍
my favorite time of video

What a peculiar time to upload
I love that I could see my 5000 people small Czech town in a game.
It's amazing.
4:52 This certainly is a very daunting task. A large group of people right now are currently working on building the entirety of the world within minecraft, all to scale. It probably won't be done for years, but maybe that will be the next flight simulator.
"For years" is definitely an understatement. I don't think the map will ever be truly "done". I'd be surprised if they built all the major cities of every country in less than a decade, but to build the entire Earth with the level of detail they've achieved so far would literally take centuries.
@@Dan0RG it will be worth the wait, no matter how long it might be. Probably one of the only forms of the actual full detailed earth all together virtually
Along with the world updates, I find I get slightly better detail on buildings if I pre-cache an area at the highest quality setting.
It’s most beautiful simulator.
They have done a wonderful work. Pl appreciate the work.
Nice to see Cornwall!!!
Exactly how I use flight sim though. It's worth downloading all the world updates, they add some really nice 3d scans of lots of cities.
It's so funny to start watching this video and seeing him talk so much about Cologne
This is the content plants crave
In many of these cases you could use the photogrammetry option to get a very realistic view, specially about London city. Even considering these shortcomings, I believe this is a good start for mapping the whole World. Microsoft keeps releasing updates which fixes these bugs and makes more cities photogrammetry.
sure the details of housing arnt always perfect, but they are pretty damn good. my house has a house about 1/3 as big next to it, and my others neighbours is about 30% bigger than ours. this is actually shown really well, with one neighbour having the smaller house and the other the bigger, and in more or less the right spot. the neighbour along from them is a farm, and one of thier barns is a flat block in the game, but still its incredible that it roughly gets the size and location of the houses pretty darn near perfect. just the actual house and its design is obviously different.
I enjoy the fact that kliks commentary style is bone-dry, makes the jokes hit harder because you can't see them coming
I've been a nerdy flight sim enthusiast for close to 30 years and love highly complex procedures and general "flight stuff" but simply flying around the world with the drone cam is absolutely one of my favourite things to do! :D Especially with the amazing weather and lighting effects at sunset etc!!!!
The simple things in life...
edit: I would HIGHLY recommend using an xbox controller for the drone cam... additionally, many of the problems highlighted are fixed/getting fixed. Depending on the location and availability of photogrammetry data or third party/modding content. :)
I know it states "base game" but everything that Microsoft updates for free surely is part of the base game?
The flying is the best part though. There are career mods like NeoFly that allows you to fly jobs and all, personally I love flying in the mountains of Papua having to land on suicidally short airstrips
I just checked, Salisbury Cathedral is there as a 3d object. You better check your graphic settings, they seem to be a bit off. Also if you want to fly around and look at things but find the standard aircraft a bit hard to fly, then I can recommend the D77-TC Pelican. It is a free fictional aircraft that you can download if you go into the marketplace (it is the dropship from the game Halo).
If I recall correctly, there's a ingame console that let's you enable cheat mode and teleport yourself to specific coordinates on the map, as well as also enabling noclip
Could help you out at some point maybe
I think if the map can use in open world games it will be the biggest, long-term, and biggest size game ever, especially can be played online
Hey kliks, did you download the free country updates from inside flight sim's store? there's like 10, including some updates for the UK and London
