One would think that the new Midi mapping feature in VCV Rack 1.0 will start and end with using an external controller and mapping it to different parameters in VCV Rack, but oh boy, this is just the beginning. Midi mapping opens a whole new world of modulation and patching that was not available before. Yes, sure, you can now map your controller to almost anything in VCV, even if it has no CV input, but you can also modulate almost anything with other modules as well, even if what you want to modulate has no CV input, and you can also record and create automation and unique modulations, and again, assign them to almost anything in VCV. So in this video, I start with mapping an external controller, and then I use the Stoermelder modules that allow us to use Midi mapping to map other modules as well.

Just something to keep in mind... The Stoermelder modules DO NOT require any Midi. They are based on the principle of Midi Mapping, but they actually map CV.
Now that VCV Rack 2 is out, Stoermelder has not updated their modules for it. I'm sad because after i learned this trick from you, i used it a lot. Is there a way to do this with the modules available in VCV2?
@@vuzh Well, no, not really but you can download this collection until it reaches the library. You can find the files here - github.com/stoermelder/vcvrack-packone/releases/tag/Nightly
Download the file for your system under Assets and place it in the VCV plugins folder. If you don't know where it is,
you can open VCV, and under Help choose Open User Folder. Just place the file in the plugins folder there and restart VCV.
@@OmriCohen-Music Thank you Omri, and thanks for the videos, I've picked up a lot of useful stuff from watching.

Your channel is the holy grail for VCV Rack. Always have exactly what I'm looking for!
I'm happy you enjoy my work, thank you!
Brilliant! And now we have official Omri's School, since we have homework now :)
Haha, yes :) Maybe I should do this more often... Cheers Eugene!
Mapping a S & H into the the sequencer steps to get random notes is exactly what I’ve been looking to do for awhile now. This solves it. Thanks!
Oh yes, this is lots of fun! Thanks, Sean!
In this video, I finally said that along with you: ohh YES!!
You are the master!
Thank you so much for this class
Cheers Bruno!
It's always joy to watch your videos!
Thanks so much!
It just gets better and better! thank you again !
It's crazier than ever... Cheers!
This was a very informative tutorial! These modules open up so many possibilities, it's mind-blowing!
Yeah, VCV is getting better and better!
"very nice..." It is such a great thing to have access to this for free, not to mention such clear documentation to explain it all. Thank you so much!
I'm really glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
Super interesting ! Nice patch in the end
Thanks!
Amazing video, as usual!
Thanks so much!
i'm trying to look over all your videos....but this one is a masterclass! tonight i will map like hell! Thank you!
Oh nice, I hope you'll enjoy it!
Really appreciated. So far I was procrastinating on upgrade to 1.0. I didn't take the time to look what came with it. I am upgrading right now. Thanks for the useful tips and irreproachable teaching approach.
Nice! You will have lots of fun :)
TAHANKS A LOTTT😭😭😭
That was epic... This will unlock A LOT for me... thank you.

Watched this one on pre-release. Missed the première as Tuesday night = rehearsal night so I missed you guys (and gals). Anyway, the ReMove module is simply blowing my mind in terms of what can be done with it. Big Kudos to Ben!
Yes, these modules are crazy! Cheers, Wim!
I only needed the first little bit with the midi mapping
but GREAtly appreciated
I had no idea how to do it; and now I am controlling my midi like my old EURORACK I used to have : )
Oh nice, I'm happy I could help!
I haven't checked in on VCVRack in a while. Was hoping for this feature last time I played with it about 6 months ago. This is GREAT! Now just allow us to run it as a VST3. Thanks for the video.
Yeah, it's a nice one! And the VST version should come out with 2.0 :)
muito obrigado cohen, estou aprendendo muito com seus videos
Cheers, Marcelo!
I use the MIDI CC-CV plugin by VCV I love it you can create unique sounds and record them for music production
Oh my god! That full patch was SOOOOO beautifull! Where do you get all these ideas and so fast. I mean you do many videos in a week
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it :) I'm lucky that this environment inspires me...
@@OmriCohen-Music I also find it very inspiring. You're micro map tutorial here, mixed with a very clear explanation of S&H had me pause the video and then jump into the rack for around 4 hours!

Damn this so good as usual, please do more with VCV and just the BSP :). Would love to see a start to finish ambient tune using the power of the BSP for us to follow.
Thank you! Yeah, I'm hoping to make more videos with hardware soon :)
Omri Cohen great! The BSP is so good with VCV, I’m just using midi mapping (basic) but would be great to see how sequencing, drums and using a synth on it would be. Learning from you makes things way easier, a natural.
Yes, I would enjoy doing something like this :)
There's actually a way you can multiply the capability of your controller and make one simple knob to do several and totally different tasks. You just have to simply have multiple MIDI MAP modules and for each one you change the midi channel input. In this way you can map your set of knobs in channel 1 for a particular module (and oscillator for example) Then you map the same knob or set of knobs in another MIDI map module but in channel 2. Now you can switch the midi channels in your controller and voila you can multiply the number of things your controller can do. This gives a total of 16 different set of knobs since most controllers have 16 midi channels (as far as I know, I might be wrong) This would work with controllers that let you change the midi channel on the fly but it wouldn't work if your controller needs like an editor or something to change midi channel.
Yes, totally. If you can change the Midi channel on the fly, this will work great.
With the v1 release, I still cannot update the paradigm within myself, that each parameter can be modulated now. So eah, thank you again and again :)
Yes, Roman, it's hard to grasp all of the new possibilities now... Thanks and cheers!
THANK YOU!!!
When I looked up the online manual for MIDI Map module, all I found was "To DO" .. I managed to figure out basic usage, but it turns out I was doing it backwards LOL
Also, stop turning me on to more module packs LOL ;) :P
Thanks so much, I'm happy I could help :)
Those Stoermelder modules are so cool. Are they no longer in VCV Rack? I don't see them in the library.
Yeah, I don't think they will reach the library any time soon. But you can get them here - github.com/stoermelder/vcvrack-packone/releases/tag/Nightly
Just look under Assets.
@@OmriCohen-Music Thanks, Omri!
Really nice video Omri ! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge :) I was wondering if there is a way to map a controller knob to many parameters in VCV while being able to change the value range for each parameter? It would be really useful I think !
Thanks! Well, I don't think that it's possible actually... With Midi Mapping, for now at least, you will get the whole range. You can though use the Midi-CC module for the parameters that have a CV input and this will allow you to set the range you want.
Thanks for your Quick answer !
@@gullunisebastien8601 No worries :)
Hello omri, do you know if there is a vcv rack module that does the same thing as varigate from malekko ? Thank you
Hi! Well, not really, but the Malekko collection should come to VCV soon (hopefully) :)
I have an APC mini. I currently trying to map the pads like you mapped the mute buttons with the pads on the beatstep. Thing is, the APC mini's pads output notes, not CC. So that mulimapper doesn't work. Now there's that 23 volts multimapper but the problem with that mapper is that it does do on or off on it's mapping (at least as far as I can tell) the buttons on the mapper only light up blue when I press one of the notes and don't turn off no matter how much I press them. I'm basically trying to use the APC mini as a drum machine if that helps. Any help anyone can give me is appreciated.
VERY NICE!!! I only understand a half of the stuff, but this is so great... THANKS!!!
I want to control my Roland System-1 with VCV-Rack (e.g the Cross Mod which is CC52 with an LFO of VCV) and I tried it with the CV-CC Module. But there are only CCs 0-15. Do you know a way to use CCs 0-127 to control Hardware Synths with VCV sending CCs via midi out (I searched a lot but found no tutorial on this...)?
Thanks! Well, if you have a patch saved, you can open it with the notepad for example on Windows (or the equivalent on Mac) and edit exactly the numbers you need. Let me know if it works.
@@OmriCohen-Music Thank you very much, it works! I would never have come to that without your help! I tried so many things. You really helped me a lot !!
@@mjusick2914 Perfect! Have fun :)
cool video!...what about bi-directional feedback for midi controllers...and also sending out all the midi cc# etc to the midi-controller when the CVCrack scene loads so VCV and the controller is always in sync (even after reloading a patch).
Thanks! Yes, it will take a bit longer until something like this will be available, but it's it the works :)
The current version of MIDI-CAT does exactly that what you described.
Wonderful video and very helpful! I was curious, is there any way to record with the RemoVE module while at the same time using a hardware midi controller? For example, I am trying to control the JW-modules GridSeq sequencer with my hardware controller while also recording those gestures with the RemoVE module. To my understanding, this would require double mapping the same knob in the GridSeq module, which I'm not sure is possible.
Thanks! There's a hack you can try. You will need to use both the uMAP and the ReMove for that. First, you map the parameter with uMap, and send the Midi to the input of uMap. Then you map the Offset control of uMap with ReMove, and send the Midi to the input of ReMove as well. This means that you can control the parameter with Midi, but also record the movement when you want. Let me know if it works for you :)
@@OmriCohen-Music It worked! That's a game-changer -- thank you so much. Worth mentioning that it only worked when record mode in the ReMove module was set to manual, not the touch or move modes.
how you can map the "play" button? it seems not working on mine
Can you midi map cable patches? So real physical patch cables on a midi controller would translate to software patch cables inside VCV Rack.
Have a look here :) czcams.com/channels/4jZsW1BAJa47L78Q5QczbQ.htmlvideos
you sound so much like great scott
Thanks for the awesome videos! Really inspiring. I have a small question regarding midi mapping - my knobs jump from 0 to 127 on 1 step, any ideas what could be the reason? Thanks in advance!
Thanks so much! Which controller are you using? It looks like the knobs are set to send gates so they will jump to the highest value.
@@OmriCohen-Music I'm using the same Beatstep Pro. I tried to change settings in Arturia MIDI Center - no luck. But works fine with Ableton in MCU mode
woooow
Cheers!
I'm trying to map eg. pitch knobs on a sequencer. It jumps from 0 to 100% only. It's also inverted. I have an Akai MPK mini 3. Should I just throw together some knobs and buttoms in Max MSP?
How do you set things up?
So recording the CV in VCV Rack from a hardware knob is achievable with a combination of these modules?
Well, yes :)
There's no option to do Relative mode CC mapping right? (i.e. 64=-, 66=+, etc.)
I'm not so sure I understand...
Hello Omri. As of May/2022, there are no Stoermelder modules available in VCV 2. Can you point me to info about if/when/how that functionality can be handled today? Great stuff as always! Thanks! ...edN
Yeah, unfortunately, they're not in the library but you can get them here - github.com/stoermelder/vcvrack-packone/releases/tag/Nightly
You can find the files under Assets
@@OmriCohen-Music Thanks very much! Very helpful as always.
@@edwardnixon1782 cheers!
I use an Akai APC Key 25. The knobs are mapped to the faders in the mixer as desired but when I try to map the buttons on the launchpad to a solo or a mute button on the mixer for example, it just sends a trigger. I mean, the channel is muted only till the button is pressed. The moment that button is released the channel is unmuted again. The same with step sequencers. None of the functions stay triggered past the button release. How do I send gates as opposed to triggers? How do I fix this?
Hi! Well, it depends on the modules you use. For example, if you use the MindMeld mixer, there's an option in its right click menu to change this from momentary to latch. But not all modules have this option so what you can do is use a FlipFlop. Basically, with each trigger from your controller, it will output a gate from one output, and with another click, it will close this gate so it's basically a latch function. Let me know if it works for you.
I’m having trouble finding the Stoermelder modules in the library. Have they been removed?
Well, they are still not in the library. You can find them here though - github.com/stoermelder/vcvrack-packone/releases/tag/Nightly
You can download the file under Assets.
@@OmriCohen-Music 🤙🏻 thank you!
I wondered, how do I map my hardware controller knobs individually through VCV to a hosted VST synth?
Well, there are dedicated slots for modulation on the Host modules so you will need to use the Midi-CC module for that and not the Midi-Map.
@@OmriCohen-Music Thanks, Omri. I thought the numbers 0-15 showing in MIDI-CC were refering to the 16 MIDI channels, not CC numbers. Silly mistake.
@@nickwillder No worries, have fun!
how can one setup the "Mackie MCU Control Pro" with VCV Rack (via mackie-control protocol)?
Well, I'm pretty sure that it can send also Midi out so you just have to map the controls you want to use.
@@OmriCohen-Music how can this be achieved, since MCU has no mapping software?
You will have to use it as a Midi controller and assign the controls in VCV.
Nice video!!!!! I'm tcheck , how to use CV-Pam .
Thanks! Share what you came up with!
its just so amazing whats possible in vcv since 1.0 why people spend money on DAW when this is free :) ans thanks for the tip with the automations , i dont now that !
Yes, it's amazing how many possibilities we have now... Cheers!
Any help. I have bsp, but it's not reacting when I try to map the knobs :(
hm, figured it out, but only works when I select any channel
You have to set it with the Midi control center so you know which channel is for using the knobs as controllers.
Can you use more than one midi controller with vcv rack?
Yes, totally. I also use a few different ones at the same time like the BSP, the nanoControl, and the Midilar all together. You just need a different Midi module for each controller.
Thanks Omri
No worries :)
Woah go back a few steps. I plugged various USB Midi controllers into my PC and they doesn’t show up anywhere in VCV RACK. First of all how do I get them listed in the VCV MAP module? Thanks. Not using a DAW.
It's pretty much plug and play, there's no specific setting or something similar. Which controllers do you have?
I figured it out thank you. I just subscribed. Looking forward to following your posts as I discover the wonders of VCV RACK.
@@f1flick Oh nice, I'm happy it works!
I'd really like to get pads on a Novation LaunchControl to control buttons. Anyone had any luck with controller pads yet?
I don't have the Launch Control, but what is the behavior you get when using the pads for controlling buttons?
@@OmriCohen-Music So far MIDI-MAP doesn't recognize pads when they're pressed. I've tried setting both press types ("Momentary" and "Toggle") as well as both message types ("Note" and "CC").
Oh ok... Did you try using the other Midi modules like Gate? Do you have more than one choice when it comes to selecting a controller in the Midi-Map module?
@@OmriCohen-Music The MIDI-Gate module does seem to map the pads on the Launch Control to the outputs. So that's something. NowI guess I have to figure out how to map a pad to a module button/switch.
MIDI-GATE > MERGE > CV-MAP allows midi notes to toggle switches
Oh, nice one!
Actually, only works on “toggling” switches, e.g. the loop button on Chronoblob, if set to “momentary” will only change while note is pressed. One way to correct this is using Bog Audio Switch module it latch mode and send a constant +10V to the high input
I need a beatstep now 😬
The BSP is truly incredible, definitely get one. As far as controllers go, this is also the one stop go for me too. In combination with the Keystep, the sky's the limit. Amazing job by Arturia!
