The system needs to change, with having the conflict of interest dynamic that often has men with authority…(law enforcement) who will more likely identify with the abuser (male who craves power).
Way too often, women have been dismissed, invalidated, not believed, when sexual assault, violence, occurs.
Who wants to depend on similar people to help you, as who hurt you? Seriously?
There needs to be HUGE reform in this area. The irony is that these men, who act like they ‘already know’…arrogance…often are very ignorant to all the aspects, neuroscience, of abusers and the abused. Essentially, they will look at the variables in the equation they already agree with & throw out the rest. Which…leads to an erroneous conclusion.
It should be, that there are women who respond to any domestic violence too, that they all have intensive nervous system, attachment theory, training, and learn to call out their own biases, cognitive distortions, and narratives.
Having authority figures who think they have nothing to learn…are dangerous.

And calling him “a hero that SAVES lives in war”??! Does this pathetic excuse for a man not even know what happens in a war?! Just cause he helped an injured comrade doesn’t mean he wasn’t killing other people left and right during his time served (opposition army or not it’s still people being murdered in a war). He’s delusional beyond hope. Pretty much explains the failure his son was. Thankfully the epilogue delivered us all the much wanted justice hearing that the murderers were given life without parole. It’s a shame they even got 12 years of freedom when they belonged in jail all along. There was one shoe print that matched "the KIND OF SHOE" they HEARD one of the guys owned. There was NO cell phone data that put them at the scene. A witness, said he overheard a 'suspicious' comment. Another witness, who seemed to know certain details, was not pursued further. Why? His father was an investigator for the DA's office and his mother was a former assemblywoman who once ran for the senate. Is there more? Most likely. But based on what I read, it did NOT sound like irrefutable evidence. Sorry, but I found reasonable doubt.

Any lawyer who represents him should do their job and protect him before he testifies or gives a statement to law enforcement or the court. He admitted that he was originally planning to go hiking with the group, and he was on his way up there, in close proximity near the time of the murders. So, it's only natural to make sure he's protected and, as his attorney, make sure no one tries to tie him in as a potential third accomplice. He was clearly a witness, tried to be forthright and honest at the outset, and needed to make sure he wasn't going to get tied in with the killers. Clearly, the victim changed her mind and told him not to come hiking, most likely because someone convinced her that he wasn't welcome. He was only going to foil their plans.

In fairness it sounded like a really messed up home life. The dad built that home from scratch. The home that her mother took from him in the divorce to live with her boyfriend. The father never seemed too sad the mother was gone. Only his daughter. The other two daughters ran to start their own lives

The families are part of the problem. The manipulative and controlling boyfriend was obviously taught to be an emotional control freak because he wasn't taught to think logically. The deceased girl was obviously not taught to think logically. She literally operated from an emotional level on everything. I saw ZERO logically thinkers on all sides.
I'm so glad I didn't allow emotional excuses or explanations from my daughters. I wasn't raised that way and I didn't raise my daughters that way. Thinking emotionally is a DISASTER waiting to happen. Emotions make people to put their personal safety behind EVERYTHING ELSE. She knew her ex was a manipulative and controlling guy. Her father didn't teach her better. Surprisingly, considering he was a cop. He saw zero domestic cases in his entire career?? I highly doubt that. Domestic cases are EVERY WHERE now because parents refuse to stop catering to every emotional tear their children shed. Tears are used as a way to manipulate parents. Parents MUST do better.
