It was originated as a war cry. Today a haka is done at birthdays, weddings, funerals ECT. Its now used to show support for yourself and others and is also used to give everyone mana (strength). Doesn't matter if your doing the haka, receiving the haka, or standing by and watching. You can FEEL the emotion put into it.

But the maoris have Hakas for weddings and Hakas for fallen comrades (much like what the New Zealand infantry do for fallen soldiers) so it can be a celebration of life OR a war cry as well as other things

So we cant practice other cultures simply even if we find them interesting?

Not really. If i want to wear a native American headband because i think its cool then ill do it. If i want to get cornrows ill do it. If i want to do a cool looking traditional sacred dance then ill fo it. People should do what they can with culture. If a news reporter wants to recreate a cool dance he just saw he can do it and nobody should tell him not to.

I get it but i feel that if we either had to stop people from doing exotic cultural things that don’t originate from there background or teach people to learn that culture is something that can be shared then i would choose the latter. As long as there is respect and no harm intended. The news people were just really intrigued by the cultural dance and enjoyed seeing this culture. Instead of telling them not to do it we should tell others that sharing culture is okay. Me as a person with Mexican back round wont be offended if someone wears a sombrero because they think it looks cool. As long as they don’t do anything disrespectful like pretend their a cartel member smuggling drugs.(even then if that person was a good friend and meant it as a joke it really wouldn’t be that bad)

Yes it is a war cry but it can also be used as a celebratory dance . Hence the use of it at weddings and farewell parties and other events of significance. Celebratory as in we celebrate their life/lives and achievements and such. We shouldn't get overly offended if others outside our culture don't fully understand its significance. Much like how people like to get Chinese characters tattooed on themselves without really knowing much about Chinese culture. Rather, if the opportunity arises we should take the time out ourselves to educate others instead of simply getting angry and petty behind a keyboard. Mauri ora!

Well said bro 💯...I feel like theres nothing wrong with those outside of a culture using another cultures dance, ritual etc to celebrate a significant moment in 1s life,it ONLY shows how much that cultural dance, ritual, haka touched their lives. Now that's something the Maori should be proud of. Ofas to my polys! And those outside the poly community that keeps the haka Alive outside of New Zealand and drawing thousands and thousands into the history of my cousin ppl (The Maori). Ofas 🤙🏽
