Many newer vehicles have more technology now, especially when it comes to safety, fuel economy, and infotainment systems, thus many newer vehicles need larger batteries to power those items and that's why batteries are getting more expensive now.

If cities had fewer cars (ICE, hybrid or EV), we might realize that public transportation over the long run is much less expensive than private vehicles. Obviously the up-front cost of public transportation is higher. But the long-run costs save money. For instance, the Chicago Transit Authority serves 913,000 riders each weekday. That eliminates hundreds of thousands of automobile trips each day. At a most local level, diesel buses, streetcars or light rail vehicles reduce traffic congestion in many cities.

I feel $129 car battery is way over priced as I used to get them for around $59.95 at Sears.
The most expensive repair I’ve experienced during my 50 years of car ownership has been spending $1850 replacing the very expensive catalytic converters for my 18 years old Toyota Sienna with 325K miles and still running great with its original engine, transmission, suspension components, fuel pump, electric windows, cold AC that never needed service.
The predecessor of the Sienna had been the 1985 Toyota Supra and that car did not even need any repair of more than $1000 after 23 years of ownership with mileage well over 300K miles. I wish I still have the Supra and restoring as classic car.

This is why insurance on an EV is so high, much higher than ice or hybrids. If you get into a minor accident and dent the battery pack, the insurance company has to basically total and replace the car... also, what does it do to the resale value of the EV when it starts to run out of warranty... it has to nosedive on a vehicle you've already paid a premium for.

Insurance costs are also going up due to home charging. Its the perfect storm to get home and leave an EV unattended charging overnight in a garage. Charging is the most likely time the battery might catch on fire. It's rare but its another angle for insurance to charge a little more. Both home and vehicle insurance and as EV's age and there are more old ones this will happen more often.

Exactly , and no one in their right mind is going to want to replace an EV battery in an out of warranty EV , so it is a fair bet , as a huge amount of these shitboxes get some age on them , many people will be selling them for peanuts and buying a new car , which in my view is hardly green if the vehicle is abandoned after only 8 or 10 years .
I have ICE cars that ran just fine with just basic maintenance , one being 30 years old , my other one which was the family taxi , tow car and work horse which even up to the time i retired the old girl , still had a beautiful driveline that still ran like a clock , with an un opened engine , gear box and diff and the only reason i did not give it a freshen up and keep her going for another 10 years was the body was very beat up from a hard life and also having hail damage .
And not in my wildest dreams could i imagine any Ev lasting as long as Either of those examples , and this sort of thing is not uncommon on the old conventional cars that where built to be easily repaired and maintained , and made to last a long service life without a fortune being spent on them , which if we cut through the bullshit , Evs are just not built that way , and Evs by majority do not even have close to the range to start with , so they suck from the very first day of ownership .

The cost to replace a battery isn't just the parts cost. Labor will be $1000s in addition to that. Warranties that cover degradation below 70% are an outright scam. Teslas actually deliver only about 80% of its advertised range (at 70 mph). It gets worse in winter, another 20 to 30 percent loss in range. With a 70% degraded battery, a Tesla advertised to have a 300 mile range will deliver as little as 134 miles of range on a cold day before Tesla will do anything (300 x 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.7) = 134.

I have been sending out lots of comments saying EV’s are not reliable, dangerous because of fires, expensive to purchase, extremely expensive to repair and not good for the environment because of the battery manufacturing and disposal concerns if the battery needs to be tossed. Everyone should get an estimate on battery replacement before purchasing an EV so they understand the future repair costs. A battery failure could make many EV’s disposable which is not good for the environment. Glad to see more utube channels are talking about this major concern. 👍

The other good story is "oh , by then battery will be cheap , dont worry about it" , and this bullshit has been said all along , and have a look today , they are far from being cheap , and if you have paid extra to get a bit more range with a bigger battery , guess what , you will be paying even more when that battery requires a replacement !

Engineers and reviewers of EVs often gush over the great features and technology. However, they over look the basics like making the cars easy to repair. Full batteries will be expensive for quite some time, but there is no reason why today they should not be built in replaceable/repairable modules. The nature of batteries is that they are already built of 100’s to 1000’s of individual cells. It is ridiculous that minor damage to a battery housing results in a car being written off. And this has nothing to do with big bad insurance companies. It is the car companies that cannot properly assess the extent of the damage (if any) and did not design the battery to be repaired.

@smashtoad I am not being sarcastic. The US government did not contribute $1 to the cost of my vehicle.I paid full price, full sales tax, full insurance cost, full licencing and title fees. I pay the price for all of the electricity I use. I pay for inspections, and all maintenance. If I ever need to replace the battery I will pay for it, without government support.
This vehicle is not a toy!!
I am not an adult with a pseudo child brain.
My EV is the safest vehicle I have ever owned. That is why I bought it.
This past month it prevented an accident, involving a driver who pull out from a side road, directly across my lane. Because a turning vehicle ahead of me, was turning into the side road, blocked the driver's view of my vehicle, that vehicle pull out and stopped 90 degrees across my lane, when the driver realized my presence. My vehicle reacted quicker than my reaction time and prevented the accident.
I was driving the speed limit, with the cruise control and the safe distance mechanism active. That is the way I always drive. I see many vehicles substantially exceeding the speed limit; cutting off other drivers and riding the "tail" of the car in front of them. This is a "free" society. I have no right to object to what they are doing. I look forward to improvements that will make this vehicle even safer, so that I may live to see another day. Green energy is not my concern. If it improves the environment all the better. I don't think your assumption that "green" is the only reason for anyone to buy an EV.
Be aware that electricity can be created from: coal, oil (anything that burns), solar, wind, hydro-dams, thermo (subterranean) heat, ocean waves, nuclear fusion or fission. An ICE vehicle only runs on gasoline. Electric utilities can choose the cheapest source. The money for oil goes the oil companies, (OPEC), and to the country where it was extracted.
Please note that when an ICE vehicle applies brakes, power to the wheels is not disengaged and continues to push the vehicle forward. It is only the friction of the brakes that stops the forward motion. Eventually the transmission will drop to a lower gear (not neutral). When the ICE vehicle is completely stopped, the engine continues to burn fuel. When stopping an EV, the flow of electricity reverses, thus retarding the forward motion. and the reverse flow recaptures the energy of forward motion to recharge the battery. When stopped (e.g. at a stop sign) no electricity is flowing, none is being used.

You are so correct, hybrids definitely seem to be the best route these days. A person could argue that a conventional gas powered car is better, however, in order to meet emission standards the industry has leaned hard into small turbo charged engines. Thank you for the objective reality regarding electric vehicles! First let me state I am not anti EV; however, I am one who looks at the true reality! An electric vehicle may operate in a green way where the car is driven and used! I owned a 2001 Honda Insight manual that never had a single battery. I would still own it if I would not have crushed my hand in 2017 and could not drive stick for more than two years. This car was far greener than any EV using electric charging. Living in Pennsylvania it is a land of temperature extremes. First there exists a loss of electric when it is transferred through electric lines. Second, here the electric is generated by fossil fuels; thereby, creating a carbon footprint greater in another area. This carbon release to produce electric is in most cases produced in an area where people are living lives at lower income levels. Thirdly, the amount of carbon resources used to produce one EV is far greater than any ICE vehicle. My everyday driver is a 1996 Honda Accord with 250k miles. That makes it 28 model years old and since I purchased it with 99k miles for $2750 at Harrisburg Auto Auction I have less then $3000 in repairs, excluding oil changes and state inspection. The total of $3000 is since 2009 when I bought the car and includes, tires, coolant changes, brakes, one axle, transmission fluid changes, one battery, new head gasket, radiator one ball joint. Fourth, vehicles can catch fire for a variety of reasons ICE vehicles can be contained in most cases and yes there is environmental damage! However, with EV vehicles the fires are extremely toxic and usually cause extreme environmental damage! In grad school I worked in body shops and sold cars for a variety of different manufactures. Most ICE vehicles can be repaired at a reasonable cost; however, even some very minor accidents with an EV can result in a total loss. The true reality is plug in electric vehicles are not the solution to our global issues. In reality electric vehicles have become a social statement for those who accept falsehoods and half truths and want simple solutions to complex problems! Electric vehicles may play a part in the future; however, they are not the answer!

Very few people are anti ev. What most people are who are against evs, are against them because the technology isn’t here yet to make them a viable alternative outside of a few niche situations. We need much better batteries where they take up much less space and can be protected better, and make their range comparable to combustion vehicles. We also need much better charging technology. And finally, no electric grid is able to support a anything near half the cars on the road being an ev. So electric grids need hundreds of billions in upgrades if not trillions depending on where you live. But the issue with this is that who do you think will pay for the upgrades? We will by paying more for electricity.

    • @frankbaran5698
      @frankbaran5698 Před 6 měsíci

I'm anti-EV. The idea that they are eco-friendly is a sham. The charging stations aren't powered by forest elves who run on treadmills.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration says that 79% of energy consumption in the United States comes from fossil fuels (natural gas, oil and coal). Another 8% is nuclear power. Total renewable energy (hydroelectric, wind, solar, biomass and wood) accounts for just 13% of "green" electric technology. Regardless of the efficiency of the battery, EVs must rely for most of their energy on fossil fuels. Battery degradation means more frequent trips to the charging kiosk or home charger, which means even greater use of fossil fuels.
Don't be charmed by the look of a shiny, new EV. The problem is the batteries. The extraction and refining of lithium, cobalt, manganese and nickel denudes forests, creates huge piles of tailings and damages ecosystems. You don't see any of that in the backseat of an EV. The sources are places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, where cobalt is strip-mined or dug by underground laborers. About 68% of the world's cobalt comes from the DRC.
As for the sorry state of the U.S. electricity grid, check ERCOT, the Electric Reliability County of Texas. Texas has its own grid, untethered from the rest of the country. As such EROCT frequently asks residents and businesses to reduce power consumption during peak daytime hours. Texas is not always windy or sunny, as reports from Jan. 16, 2024, indicate. Nearly 85% of energy production is coming from fossil fuels, mostly natural gas. Remember February 2021? Massive blackouts lasting for days led to brownouts and the deaths of about 300 Texans. Pray that your EV has enough juice to get you home. You'll find a cold, powerless EV charger in your garage, but at least you will be safe and not stuck along a highway..
My involvement in environmental action goes back to 1972. When I first heard about EVs, I thought this was salvation. Then I began researching. Looking at the facts made me strongly anti-EV.

That's what I've seen as well. I was looking with a colleague on the price of 2018 Tesla Model 3 LRs that started around $27k with about 40-60k miles on it, which would seem pretty good to get in on the EV hype. But we see that at 50k mi, you lose the limited warranty, then at either by Year 2026 or 120k miles. (you lose the Drive train and Battery warranty). When it comes down to it, unless one is driving their car constantly to justify the gas savings, even used EVs are too risky. We know the batteries need to be replaced, can't be repaired as-of, resulting in an easy $15k+ expense. I've been taught that if you're paying over 50% of what the car is worth to do repair work, just replace the whole car.
And so I started to see the used EV market differently where the reason we see these used EVs flood the market, bringing down the car value is because the original owners are essentially leasing the cars and trading in/up to when their warranty expires. And I'm sure Tesla knows this.

Just like any battery with lithium , your not supposed to charge it above 80% and to not go below 20% so realistically you can take 40% off the top to any range a EV claims it has.

    • @lawrenceemke1866
      @lawrenceemke1866 Před 5 měsíci

@chriscary9269 I understand the 80% recommendation. It is because as the batteries recharge the Li ions must find a place on the cathode, the electron must reside on the anode. As the battery get closer to full charge, it becomes harder to find charge locations. Thus the rate of charge drops, and the heat goes up. I can understand using a public charging station might lead to a longer period of time, and delay others from using those facilities. I have heard that 90% is an acceptable level. And even on occasions a 100% charge is acceptable when starting on a long trip.
I don't understand the 20% restriction. Is this because of a lack of public charging stations? You risk not reaching your destination? I wonder why a completely empty battery could cause a recharging problem. Don't know what that problem could be. Maybe it is a long charging time a public stations. It seems 20% is too high for a home recharge. 10% might be more reasonable.
Can you explain your understanding of these limits? From where did you get these guidelines?

Later, heard you could get a battery for $1,500 in nearest large city. Now, it’s 2025 and still haven’t faced this issue. Am envious of the low running cost of EV’s, but unless I win a lottery, I can’t afford a car with a huge battery replacement charge.

This is a very well researched and presented video. The cost of battery replacement leaves you with a $0.00 trade in value. It would make more sense to lease and not buy one of these 100% depreciation vehicles. No one would ever by a used one without a certified new battery pack. Thank you for this EV replacement battery cost picture.

The battery is placed too low in the car, I believe. Going over a rock will happen from time to time. A well designed car would be able to deal with such an event. Just my view. I know little about cars but I have a scientific background.

Yep. And don’t think leasing gets you out of this. If the battery is damaged it must be replaced. All leases require you to return the car in good working condition.

I recently purchased a Honda CRV 2017 1.6 Diesel from a Honda Dealer with 65k miles and one owner - full history - comes with 12 month Warranty. Does over 50mpg and annual road tax of £20 - Cost £11k. If fed and watered and with a fair wind should last at least another 5 years. Build in say £500 at each annual MOT PLUS £500 for new set of tyres over its lifetime - assume re-sale value of say £2k - I calculate it will cost me around 20% of a comparable EV model. 80% is a lot to pay for a new car smell. PLUS insurance has cost me £350pa!

there needs to be a common method of replacing bad cells instead of the entire pack....they don't even do this with standard hybrid vehicle batteries, they just replace the entire module and its expensive.

  • @tonyb3629
    @tonyb3629 Před 6 měsíci

A well maintained ICE can remain in use, and even have resale value after 10 years with no problem. Once the battery warranty expires on an EV, it's basically junk because a) the battery is defaintely going to be degraded, b) it will still be massively expensive to replace and c), the battery packs themselves are often updated a few times during a cars production run, meaning spares will be almost impossible to find. You'll also need a specialist, possibly dealer, to replace them at whatever labor costs they have, so the prices quoted exclude those costs too.

The takeaway is that battery replacements for even the inexpensive cars are cost prohibitive. Why would you spend $15,000 on batteries on a used car that is worth $15,000? I love the internal combustion engine.

A whole house battery costs about $7,500 for 10 kWh. Thats $75,000 for the 98 kWh battery in a Ford Lightning or $30,000 for the 40 kWh in the Hyundai IONIQ. That cost doesn’t include the cost of installation either, that’s just the battery cost.
Looking at the cost of other large battery systems I’m not surprised at the cost of a replacement battery for an EV since they use the same general type of battery.

Korean company is the one who designs and manufacture Chevy Bolt battery pack that has armor plate at the bottom of battery pack. Why don’t they put it in Hyundai IONIQ 5? It is very common to hit large objects on the freeway at high speed. I think IONIQ 5 is a very good EV, but this is the only thing that stops me from getting one.

Cost of battery replacement will ruin the used EV market.
The success of a marque is measured by the strength of its used car market.
And so far they’re leaving this up to the used car buyer. Who’d rather buy a Honda or a Toyota ICE vehicle.

The cost of batteries can reflect the quality.
The price of individual 18650 batteries can vary a lot at on-line sales venues.
The lower cost batteries (typically from China) will not last as long as more expensive, higher quality batteries.
When you put 7,000 low quality batteries together in a battery pack for a car, the risk of fire goes up.

Your cellphone loses 30% of its charge over the first year and Tesla after 100,000 has no life left in the car it only charges 100% in the same period as did when you bought it but only can travel 80 miles on this charge if the temperature is the same. Lyft driver had his car for 1 year and now its a paperweight. Battery replacement is $17,000.00 US. This also the reason why the EV have no resale value

Each company, and indeed, each car, has its own battery design...and no promise that they will maintain parts for the 7 years that there used to be for car parts in America. Cannot wait to see how long it will be until there are junkyards stacked full of old cars because they no longer make the replacement battery

@@quercus5398 I hope you are being sarcastic. If not then you are out of touch with reality. At $3.00 per gallon for 10 gallons costs about $30. My home charge for my EV costs about $10, for 224 miles. 10 gallons at 20 mpg is 200 miles. $10 vs $30.
Now if you use a public charger, you may see a $20 to $30 cost for the charge, Before I had the home charger, I had a free charging pass from the manufacturer. While I paid $0, the station reported around $24 per charge, and this was when I was charging on a frequent schedule - it was free, why not charge? Gas stations are charging in the area of $30.00 per tank. A charging station is business to maximize profit. So look, $30 for the same amount of miles seems reasonable. Why charge less?
