In Germany, for example, they used to have vans driving around scanning private homes to see if any “unauthorized” TV’s were in use. Frankly, I find that to be a violation of what should be the freedom to listen and watch without having to pay a tax for that freedom. They say the license fees were used to fund public broadcasts. But why are there still ads, then? Control, revenue, and the “authority” to spy/ check on private citizens’ activities seem to be the underlying rationale. We’re much freer in the USA, but who knows for how much longer?

I've often wondered why news are not reported in this manner, with the intent to factually inform and educate. ❤❤❤
In the 1900-1985 this is how news was reported.
Because the people who control media are part of a serious public corruption ring that, of course, they are not trying to disclose to the public.
Thus, they report nonsense and fake news to distract from the facts or control the narrative instead of just presenting clear information and facts.
Oftentimes, the world is so gullible to this aspect of the business of media , politics and the criminal networks fueling them that channels and content producers that are producing fact based material is bought up by the media conglomerates who fear the truth being openly and clearly discussed.
Content producers who disclose unbiased fact telling or promote free thinking & free speech are often happy to be bought by the conglomerates. The conglomerates make significant purchase offers strictly because their intentions of social engineering and narrative control are invaluable to their high level criminal enterprising ....
And the average content producer is happy to see a fat check with little regard or knowledge of the severe corruption relating to control of information released to the public...

As for the value of Kremlin guarantees, Ukraine was guaranteed not only territorial integrity but also political sovereignty. I don't know how I found my way here but as the others have echoed, current geopolitical events are put into perspective from an unbiased and clear tone. Greatly appreciated as the state of news worldwide deteriorates into propaganda. America.
During the time when Torrejos was President in Panama, the Association of American Railroads devised what was known as the "rail bridge", which carried container cargo, "in bond", across the North American continent without customs inspection. Essentially, the containers went ship-to-ship and continued their transit to Europe or to the Western Pacific as if they had never touched land. The issues in Panama are causing this to occur again and old locomotives that were waiting to be scrapped are being rebuilt and pressed back into service.
So instead of using the water way, the trains were picking up cargo from ships on the Pacific side and delivering it to ships on the Atlantic (and vice versa)?

The Sweden article is totally blown out of proportion! I did not expect this from Firstpost! I'm Norwegian, this is not mentioned in any Norwegian or even Swedish news! all that is said is that they consider reactivation of civic duty, something Sweden has not had since 2008, and a statement during a Speech that Sweden could be in war, like "one day". There's no war panic in Sweden or any neighboring countries.

Re: Panama canal issue can be "fixed" but not in the short term and the financial viability is uncertain.
Unlike the Suez canal which is salt water to salt water - the Panama canal flushes fresh water into the sea with each use slowly depleting the water catchment if the rain doesn't replenish it (which it hasn't been for a while).
One solution is to use pumps and a solar farm to pump out the 2nd last part of the canal back to the water catchment. The last part of the canal can be filled with sea and fresh water as needed. Though you can't use the canal when the sun's not out it's better than shipping and burning fuel every day for it's operation. Because it's a new installation there's costs to putting in the pumps and also running it so either way there's going to be an added cost.
A minor contribution to the solution is to utilize water catchment methods (fog nets etc.) if viable to the local geography to increase a small amount of water entering the catchment.
I've not caught p with the latest news so don't know whether these types of ideas has already been looked at or not.

On the Maldives story… India out… I’ve not heard what is the grief with the few Indian soldiers there assisting in search and rescue! What’s the Maldives criticism of these soldiers? Seems like a “nothing” kind of optics objective that really accomplishes nothing. People in power waste so much energy time money and power! Why don’t they just focus on doing something good for the PEOPLE for a change!!! Only reason they should ever be given power!
The present Maldives leader is a radical islamist, china is making use of him to get a strong foot holding Maldives. Turkey is lead by by radical islamist too. Once the maldeve citizens realise the damage done by their ruler to their tiny island fighting a giant country which is a selected leader of 140 countries.
Probably because the political campaign of the ruling party relies on blaming India for every bad thing. If they fail to show India as the bad guy they lose out on voters.
So sad how our earth is under seige in every way that is helpful

Sweden prepares for war together with Norway and Finland. The obvious reason is that the constellation of Russia and China is much more aggressive towards western countries than even the former Soviet Union was. Like Finland, Sweden applied for NATO membership, but that is not yet approved. Especially Norway but also Finland helps Sweden integrate their defence with the rest of western Europe, so that they are in a state of nearly de facto membership in Nato now, even not yet formal. There is a tension within NATO because those ruling Turkey and Hungary seem to have somewhat contrary aims to the rest of the alliance. Both nations try to establish a theocratic dictatorsh which is opposite to the moderrn western tradition, and that also impacts their association with the alliance.

@@Mjfa9923 Soviet Union bombed Sweden on several occasions both in the north and the south through "navigational errors" during WWII, and Russia has in resent years practiced nuclear strikes towards Sweden, the most notorious being "Ryska Påsken" (Russian Easter) ín 2013.

At last, there was a chance for lasting peace by integrating Russia into the community of friendly states. Just as the wars between France and Germany had buried through the integration in what became EU, Russia would become part of it through economic ties and cultural exchange as both sides opened up for travel... that's what projects like Northstream was all about, and why there are so many Russians owning investments in European countries.
Anyway, late 1990s, future looked bright. There had been hell in the former Communist block with institutions falling apart when the entire economic system had to be replaced. But now everything was growing, things got better.
Peak came around 2005. Tourism was booming, lots of people curious about the Russian culture and history went to visit, and a generation of Russians saw themselves as a natural part of Europe, freely travelling abroad. Militaries both in and outside NATO held exchanges and common exercises through Partnership for Peace. There would be no more military conquest in Europe, any issues settled through political and economical negotiations.
This dream is what Kremlin decided to completely shatter in February 2022, making it clear that their dream of a Russian Empire is more important to them than anything else.
When a country prefers domination and subjugation over friendship and exchange, its neighbours has no choice than to adapt to the new situation, and that is what is happening.

Yea, we are not that worried right now. Its more annoying and tedious with the Ruzzians doing IT-attacks that disturbs GPS and so on. Nothing major yet though, and no harm done really. That said, we dont put the carriage before the horse usually, but its as they say. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
