There needs to be an update for the ability to record a custom sound. My doorbell has a unique jingle, not the conventional doorbell sound as shown in this Tutorial. That would be an awesome update. You could train your phone to recognise these unique custom sounds in the way we use hey Siri to recognise our voices.

The funniest thing happened. I was lying in my bed watching Netflix when I’m alerted of a smoke alarm going off. So I pause my show and listen. There’s a smoke alarm just outside my door, and it never went off. There is no way I would’ve missed it. No one in the house heard a smoke alarm either. I think it needs to be improved upon as I’m not the only one to who it’s sent false alarms to.

Please remember we advise not to rely on your iPhone to recognize sounds in circumstances where you may be harmed or injured, in high-risk or emergency situations, or for navigation.

If your iPad is doing the sound recognition, can you get the notification on your iPhone?

We're glad to provide some information. When you turn Sound Recognition on, when your iPad recognizes a sound you've selected, your iPad will notify you when a sound has been recognized.
