  • 1959 is considered to be the golden year of Gibson Les Paul production, with less than 650 guitars manufactured, the fabled '59s found favour with the likes of Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman and Eric Clapton. 2019 marks the 60th Anniversary of these iconic guitars, and to celebrate, Gibson Custom have released a series of '59 Les Paul Standards.

    I’ve always been a fender guy through and through. I was lucky enough to get a 59 in my hands and I gotta say that Gibson have done something really special here! What an incredible instrument. If you have the opportunity, do yourself a favour and give it a try. Any guitar player who is serious about playing owes it to themselves to give this thing a go!

      I just got the 60th anniversary 1960 reissue. I've had it 3 weeks now, and I must say that it is Amazing. You will not be disappointed. Every aspect of it is perfect. The setup, the action, the finish, the sound, everything! I have never had a guitar I could put the action so low on and still play cleanly. It is too low, I actually raised it up a little. I have 4 other Les Pauls, and none of them even compare. This is also the latest of the bunch at 8.3 Lbs. My 87' Custom sound pretty good too, but it is a boat anchor, and it gets muddy when driven hard. This 1960 anniversary is my favorite guitar now.

    Very well done demo Peach Guitars. The best I've seen yet that showcases the tonal characteristics of the model.
    I purchased one of these 60th Anniversary Custom Shop R9 (factory burst finish) earlier this year and can attest to the amazing clarity of the unpotted Custombucker PU's in these models. They are fantastic iterations of the original PAF's as demonstrated so skillfully in your video presentation. Again, well done.

    They don't use Hyde glue to bind the mahogany body to the maple cap because Hyde glue would never dry if it's sandwiched like that. Original bursts used some sort of formaldehyde-based glue for the body construction, so if you buy a true historic custom shop you're most probably getting that too. In any case, they use Hyde glue for just about everything else on the guitar so it's not like it makes any difference really. Really a gorgeous guitar you got there!

    Recently (finally!) got to try 3 of these and I was surprised how bright they were (my only comparison is my 1968 LP Custom which I've had for decades) but it actually took me back to some of the Clapton, Page and Peter Green stuff I was listening to late 60's / early 70's so it makes sense that Gibson have gone all out to get 'that' sound (which you have pulled off nicely in the vid!). They retail for HKD 59K (USD 7,564) so not a 'pressing' purchase for me but I would love one! 😀Cheers.

    I love these guitars and I’m glad Gibson makes them. But I can’t figure out why, especially for the price, I see so much variation in the rosewood boards and top cuts. The rosewood should be AAA+ and consistent, dark, even tone brown wood. Look at a dozen online and you’ll find plenty of streaky, inconsistent rosewood. At times, it almost looks like pau ferro. The center seem of the maple top should split the saddle piece. The center seem should run directly below the center of the saddle. You’ll find either the seem is off or the saddle is slightly off. We’re talking aesthetics and millimeters, but geometry in guitars is important, especially at these prices.

    • @MarijnSlot
      @MarijnSlot Před 4 lety +1

      Centre seems on originals were also all over the place, so technically this is accurate ;)

    • @davidburke2132
      @davidburke2132 Před 4 lety

      BELL TUNNEL Some of the fingerboards may look like pao ferro because they ARE pao ferro. Gibson are making some of these 60th Anniversary models with what they are calling “Bolivian rosewood” fingerboards, but that’s isn’t actually a “real” wood name (it’s a colloquially used term) and Gibson are pretty open that the “real” name is pao ferro. They’re doing this largely to cater to export markets because of the continuing (for now) issues around Indian rosewood but from time to time you’ll see Bolivian rosewood guitars for sale in the US.
      Regarding the tops I’m incredibly fussy and generally have a pretty keen eye for things which aren’t level or centred and I’ve not noticed any un-centred top seams or bridge/tailpiece positioning. I’ll have to look closer now I guess. 😜 Just to clarify though... if everything is properly centred then the centre seam should run under the bridge directly inbetween the D and G string saddles not in the middle of any of the bridge saddles, so maybe your eye is looking for the wrong reference?

    I’d like to hear this guitar compared with a standard with same amp settings. I’ve got the trad and after much eq tweaking got a sound which is thick but clear. The Boss Blues driver with zero drive set seems to really help bring my LP to life also. I’m not going for a heavy rock tone, more a just at break up clear tone, but nice and meaty. I’d like this LP compared to the Eastman as well. Can’t help feel the quality of the wood was a big factor with the 50s LPs and word is Eastman have some nice wood at fraction of cost.

    • @davidburke2132

      Emilio Margarit I don’t have a current Standard or recent Traditional but I do have a few USA production Les Pauls and one of these 60th Anniversary models and I totally agree... the Custom Shop guitar totally blows away the USA production models.
      However, I don’t really agree with Jack’s comments about this guitar vs Gibson Historics and Reissues over the past decade (and particularly since 2013-14). I’ve played many of those guitars and most of the changes for historic accuracy on this year’s 60th Anniversary are of a cosmetic nature (correct colour and positioning of the “Les Paul Model” script on the headstock is a perfect example) rather than things that affect the sound. In my opinion the Historics have been so good for quite a long time that this year’s model doesn’t really move that any further forward and if you get the chance to pick up a previous year’s model (as I say, especially since 2013 when they started using Custombuckers and hide glue, at least for the neck joint) for a good price then in my opinion you should jump at it and not feel like you’re losing out over this year’s model. To be frank the Custom Shop Historics have been outperforming (as they should do of course) the USA production guitars for ever.

  • @ciri151
    @ciri151 Před měsícem

    Fun fact. It turns out that they didn't use hide glue to glue the maple cap to the back on the originals. So a lot of people who build replicas and even Gibson themselves got this wrong all this time.

  • @adamwatson6916
    @adamwatson6916 Před 4 lety +1

    Not all 59 paf pickups were weak sounding pickups the output levels varied quite alot and the strength of the magnets varied alot. A paf could be anywhere from 7k to 9k. There are many aggressive real pafs. Many pafs have been found to be mid 8k and higher pages neck paf is 8.6k for expample and in regard to calssic les paul tones the guitars were only a few years old when the classic tones were recorded by people like green page clapton etc. So the magnets did not have enough time to weaken. The les pauls we all love did not have 50 years of aging on them when those classc tones were recorded. Classic les pauls are more favourite but there is much b.s mojo speak involved. Why do i want a les paul reissue that sounds 60 years old when they classic tones were recorded when the greatest les pauls were only 5 to 15 years old

      Page had his paf replaced with a t top in the early 70s perhaps that was the reading on his t top. Not saying the pafs some of them were certainly not I agree on that.

    The caps are a shell with a normal cap inside. It's a bumblebee look. Perhaps that is nothing new.
    Also, hide glue takes days, if not weeks to dry. That would take a lot of patience in a factory setting. With orders to fill, patience is not in large supply.
    Bottom line? The new owners are quite good at marketing.

      sixbladeknife44 I mostly agree. This year’s changes are small and cosmetic (such as the positioning and colour of the Les Paul Model script on the headstock). However, they’ve been getting it very right on these Historic guitars for quite a long while now in my opinion, so only cosmetic changes at this point is good by me. 😃

Personally I don’t like Strats, but I know that’s just my personal preference and it doesn’t make a Strat a “mediocre guitar”. Of it’s type this 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul is absolutely up there with the best new instruments of its kind you can buy anywhere.
