One very important ingredient that is missing in the re-issues is that the ABR-1 bridges that Gibson is using are not the same. The metal alloy is different. The tailpiece, though, is really close to the old ones. I found an old bridge to put on my R7 and it now has more clarity and an 'acoustic' response. Four Uncles makes a great reproduction ABR-1. Love your playing and let's face it, all of those guitars sound great.

@MATT, all Custom shop Historic Les paul's are structurally the same regardless of year but in 2013 and beyond Gibson started to upgrade some things to more closely match a old late 50's LP like they removed the truss rod sheath, they started to use Hide glue for the neck joint and fingerboard attachment, (the tops never used Hide glue it was Phenol formaldehyde that was used in the 50's). the plastics got more historically accurate as the years progressed and 2013 to present all Historic R8,9 and 0's all got "Custombuckers" which to some are Gibsons best "PAF".

The main reason that it's very difficult to get the reissues to come close to a real 59 is of course the aging of the wood... another thing that alot of people don't realize is that even the aging of the pick-ups make a difference...as the wire and the magnets age this causes a difference in the over all tone of the guitar....

I can't believe that I didn't see/watch this video before now! Very interesting. I went in cold, not reading any previous comments as not to color my impressions. After listening to the comparisons a few times and playing certain parts over even more, the differences are pretty apparent. All the Historics sound great and similar to each other, so much so, it becomes difficult to tell them apart sometimes. I think I preferred the R8 of the 3. Then there's the actual '59...far less compression, far more clarity/brightness/articulation (especially when played clean) and it just sounds bigger and bolder compared to the Historics. It's very woody-sounding which is most obvious in the last segment when playing clean thru both pickups. One thing I've noticed with particularly good LP's, which the "Danger Burst seems to be", is that the neck and bridge pickups tone is more similar to each other than on lesser-sounding LP's and the most telling component is the combined pickup tone. I'd bet that the actual '59 is fairly lightweight as well But that doesn't seem to always matter...just listen to "The Beast" which is a couple ounces over 9 pounds and Joe Bonamassa supposedly prefers heavier Bursts.
One more point...authentic to original is one thing, but not the only thing. A great LP or any guitar can easily stand on its own and not sound authentic to an original. I have 6 R's that were made ranging from 1998 thru 2020. My 2020 R0 and especially my 2020 R9 are easily the most authentic sounding (and feeling) of the bunch. The R9 was hand-selected by me from about 2 dozen R9's over a one-year period and was head and shoulders above the rest. The R0 was bought sight/unplayed and I fortunately got very lucky with it. My other 4 R's all sound fantastic, but not particularly authentic to original. I'm just saying that I don't think any guitar should be judged only by how authentic it sounds.

@@MOBontv I've only been fortunate enough to play a handful of actual Bursts and only a couple really stood out from the others that I can recall and they were all different from each other. They all felt and sounded old though, There's really no other way to describe it. They all had a loose, almost rickety feel to them that translated to the way they sounded. That feel and tone can be found in a number of R's, but certainly not all of them. It's fumy how you always hear about "the great '59 or '58 Burst", but you never hear about the ones that aren't so great. However, I think any guitar will get at least marginally better the older it gets and the more it gets played. The better ones just get played more!

My observations, dished out with a healthy portion of salt:
I purchased a new Les Paul Custom in 2004 (first year they were made in the custom shop). It has the 498t/490r pickups, a short neck tenon, true ebony board, maple top, and a "swiss cheese" style weight relief. In other words, it's about as far from the true historic spec as you can get. When I bought it, I admittedly didn't know much about vintage Les Pauls. After the initial hype of purchasing my first Gibson subsided, I realized that I was quite a bit underwhelmed by the guitar, to the point where I would consistently reach for guitars that were 1/5th the price tag. Of course, I could not admit to anyone that I wasn't pleased with a guitar I had just dropped $3,200 on. However, I have stuck with the guitar and play it as often as possible. After more than 15 years, it has eclipsed all other guitars I own. It is my most playable/comfortable guitar and it is the most resonant. It is my only solid body that undeniably vibrates its tone into my stomach, which is an amazing characteristic. It is my only guitar that I feel has it's own 'personality'. It feels better, plays better, and sounds better than any "True Historic" reissues I have picked up at local shops. I have made no changes to the guitar, but it has matured into something beautiful. I attribute this to the Nitro finish allowing the wood to mature and to relatively consistent handling and playing. Of course, it could also just be that I'm comfortable with it due to time spent together and maybe it's still a dog. Who knows?
What's my point? I think that many of these "sub par" modern Gibsons, especially those coming out of the Custom Shop, will have all of the tonal qualities found in the '58-'60 guitars, regardless of their tenons, capacitors, pickups, or weight reliefs. But like all of us, they just need a little time to grow up and someone willing to invest in them. Cheers.

From your comparison, the original has a clarity, EQ and note separation the others are missing. The 2001 R8 was definitely the closest. The others seem to have more low end in the wrong frequencies. As you said, none sounded bad, just different. I bet I could get closer to the original by changing pickups, bridge, posts, pots etc.. Time, experimentation and a few bucks. Both of my Historics have had a makeover by Kim and plenty of part changes. I find they are at the top of their game in terms of Sonics and playability. They have really opened up and are getting better with each passing day. Great job on the comparison.

My Les Paul is a wine red 10 lb 2006 LP Classic that I bought for $650 off Craigslist in Hawaii. I totally gutted it and replaced everything but the frets. Made a bone nut from scratch. Kluson tuning machines. Made a vintage spec wiring harness with good wire, pots, and bumblebee caps. Faber bridge and tailpiece. Sheptone PAF clones. Afterwards, I had my buddy bring his 59 over so we could A/B mine and his through my vintage Marshall JMP 50. My Classic sounds SO close to my friend's real 59. (When I say "close" I don't mean identical. They both have unique tonal qualities, of course. I just mean close in overall sound quality/response)..and for the type of music I play, mine actually sounds better. The singer in my band has an early Custom Shop '58 reissue LP (with Sheptones in it). I like it better than my other friend's real 59 - playability, tone - just all around. Real '59s are special guitars and holy shit, I'd love to own one! ..but you don't *really* NEED one to get that tone. You don't even really need a R9. You can get very close by just doing what I did. FInd a nice LP that plays/resonates well and gut it. (Which in total, cost me about $1,500) I do wish mine had a nice fat neck on it, though. That's one of *many* things that I really don't like about Classics. I've also done the same thing to my SG standard. Sounds just as good as any vintage SG I've played or worked on. AMAZING tone. I have under $1k total invested in that guitar. I beefed up a couple clients' Traditionals this way too. They sounded AWESOME!
My SG sounded decent before I gutted it. Nothing special. My Classic sounded like absolute DOGSHIT. Now they're my go to guitars in the studio.
There's definitely something to be said for how wood ages, though. I have an old '65 Gibson acoustic. I've played about 20 of them from the same 64-65 time frame and the only two that ever sounded good were mine and another one belonging to a client. Both guitars spent their whole "lives" here in Hawaii and both sound wonderful. I think the consistent year round heat, salt, and humidity aged them in a special way. ...but IMO, most of what you're hearing in an electric guitar is electronics and the unique touch of the player him/herself. Then amp. Then hardware and wood. The wood matters, but not nearly as much as people think. Pickups and amp choice are the biggest chunks of the pie. (Again, IMO)
All that being said, though - I've played a couple '59s that were absolutely magical and couldn't be compared to anything else. They're kinda like old Marshall amps. Every one of them is slightly different. Lol ..and I could *definitely* hear a difference in the "Danger Burst" in this video. Way more clear and airy and great compression. '59s really are magical. :)

Real '59s are special guitars and holy shit, I'd love to own one! ..but you don't really NEED one to get that tone. You don't even really need a R9. You can get very close by just doing what I did. FInd a nice LP that plays/resonates well and gut it. (Which in total, cost me about $1,500) I do wish mine had a nice fat neck on it, though. That's one of many things that I really don't like about Classics.
Lol ..and I could definitely hear a difference in the "Danger Burst" in this video. Way more clear and airy and great compression. True '59s really are magical. :)

    @hardrockrelics2157 Před 4 lety

The Danger had a more open dry clanky sound, the takeaway is Brazilian rosewood, Honduras mahogany, super low output almost p90 like pickups, a deeper carve top, and let the electronics get old along with the wood.

Love the clean sounds of the '59 LP but I will ALWAYS choose the modern sound over the PAF's. I prefer the ceramic sound of the 496R/500T hands down. The snappy mids to me are what a LP should sound like. Not a Tele. Regarding Fender MIM guitars, I also prefer their Standard models ceramic single coils. They sound bigger than any alnico they produce.

Hey Matt keep up the great work. You could sound great on a tennis racket with six strings. I hear you. You really can't tell the difference as much on here but I know where you are coming from in a studio. I did a session in which I had the privilege of using a real 58 335 (against my very nice 335 in which I donated it to Joe Prewitt of the Mangos in which he played it for 10 years. It became his hands I couldn't get it back ROFL says how nice my guitar was) man did that 58 sound hot on record. My guitar sounds amazing but couldn't hold a candle to the 58 on record. I also wanted to thank you in a round about way. I saw Bill Cherensky a few months back and asked him if he had Bernie's signature and he said check out your Facebook page because you had just posted it from an old cassette sleeve. I have one of Bernie's old necks (was on a guitar of course) and when I was teenager for about a year he taught me on this very nice Fernandes maple neck. I am having a body made by a big fan of Bernie's and wanted to have his signature silked onto the neck. I plan to have it built in the next 6 months. When it is done I will send you the pictures. I know how you felt about Bernie and how he felt about you so I am sure you will appreciate it. Again thanks and good luck with all your endeavors

Each of your "Historics" sounded really, really great! To my ears, the R8 sounded closest to the "DangerBurst's" vocal clarity. Each of the R9's seemed to have a little more "velvet" (softer around the "edges") in their clean voices with the pots rolled down (again, to my ears). I would hazard a guess that the de-gaussing over time of DB's pickups might possibly have something to do with it's clarity-of-voice. And yes, the difference in the pot tapers was obvious in the vid.

It would have been very telling if you had first just did sound samples of each Les Paul with no way to ID which was playing.
Using that same riff with just the audio i am willing to bet that in that type of test it would be extremely difficult to tell which was which.
The late great Les Paul himself said it "People hear with their eyes" and i agree with him! We love to think a old 59 sounds a million times
better than any Re-issue but the reality is Some of the Re-issues get real damn close and considering a old original will cost you ballpark of $275,000-$750,000 a $6,000 Reissue is a incredible option. I love my 2018 True Historic R9 and my 2016 Historic R7 Gold top.

The 59 is more open, organic, more note seperation. It wasnt hard to hear the difference. In 20 or so years yours will sound as good. Back in 1970, I bought my first lp in 1977 I bought my second, and in 1979 I traded my 70 lp for my friends 71 sg.back in 2006,I traveled back home and saw my friend, he still had my 70 lp, I played it for about an hour, it was twice the guitar it was in the 70s. It felt lighter. Even playing it unplugged , it sounded more resonate. Wood gets better in time. The nitro finish wears down and drys out more , lets the wood vibrate more. You can feel it when you play and old one.

I have an older 335 (not a 59) that had a nashville and I changed to an abr but kept the inserts. Mechanically the inserts are actually superior to studs in the wood.

The paf neck has way more clarity and like most vintage pafs it sounds like a fatter bridge pickup . The newer neck pickups sound like most modrern paf necks tend to sound. Much bassier and much more spongy and slightly dull. The newer bridge pickups got closer to the original paf sound . Winders seem to be able to get the bridge pickups closer . I will say these boutique neck pickups sound much better than any stock gibson neck pickup . Although the custombcuker neck sounds very good. The pickup is arguably the most important component of an electric guitar and it baffles me why gibson cuts corners with such an important aspect .Dont get me wrong i love gibsons modern paf types but to my ears there are much closer to a late 70s and early 80s hard rock pickups thhen they are a to a 1959 paf. They have way more midrange and have alot more of that cocked wah vowel sound then real pafs do .These qualities make them great for late 70s and 80s hard rock and classic metal and 90s grunge and alternative but for a truer paf tone their are better choices .

They all sound very good but different but I will agree with others I like the R8 the best very very nice sound I will suggest that you watch the Doug and Pat show they have an episode that they did recently were there doing the pickup shootout they're also trying a different wiring harness but they got some pickups from a company in Germany that are absolutely fucking amazing admire their the closest thing I've heard did the real thing but I'm sure it also has to do with the pots in the capacitors and all that what model Trainwreck amplifier are you running through what kind of speakers are in the cabinet you're using and how is the amplifier set

definitely. Amazing how transparent it is. Also the amp too. Wrecks reveal the truth to my ears. Thanks for watching

The R9 has the richer bottom end of the new guitars but doesn't match the "real" thing - where the mahogany audibly rings thru esp clean - you can almost hear the grain!

The original just screamed and was pretty the hole time. The r9 was muddy r8 was brighter then the 9. No need for headphones
