I know mine does give it a really good stir, but I think you should be ok mate. Give it a try and see what happens. You can always add a bleed tap near the air pump and let some of it out to reduce the air output in the chamber. Terry.

Superb Terry. Was thinking of buying the tempest to run along side my easy pod in my grow on in shed cos I’m feeding quite heavy and it’s a bit too much for the pod getting a lot of fines through. I think I will hold fire for your plans as your design looks for better. Top job 🤙 N

Hi Steve, thanks mate. Not using air on the first flush would leave a lot of dirt in the media. It does need a good turning over to loosen it up mate. Thanks for the thought, Terry.
Got into the koi hobby last summer when I was bored of staying home all the time. It quickly turned into an obsession and I’ve been loving learning so much about koi, ponds, and filters. I unfortunately built my pond last summer without much knowledge and built it without a bottom drain and pretty poor filtration! 🤦🏽♂️I’m hoping to completely renovate the pond with a bottom drain, rdf, and maybe a shower filter/moving bed. But unfortunately I am not sure my DIY skills are up to the task and if I’ll have enough time since I’m still working on a doctorate degree in pharmacy.😅 I’m really glad found this channel and have been learning so much. It’s a pleasure watching all the innovation, DIY projects, care that Terry puts into his pond and koi!🙌🏽
Hi Asep, and thank you for your kind comments. It's really appreciated. I ran ponds for years and never had a bottom drain. A pond will work perfectly ok on a submersible pond pump. You can now get a retro fit bottom drain which will do the same thing, and it would save you re-doing your pond. Just a thought mate. This was my previous pond build which was run on a submersible pump: czcams.com/video/YXePMc9x5fU/video.html thanks again, good luck with all the pond improvements. take care and stay safe, Terry.
@@Wrighty Hi Terry thanks for the tip! I currently just have a pre filter in my skimmer, pressure filter, and a waterfall filter on a 2000 US gallon pond with 1 large koi and 8 small ones. I thought about retro fitting the bottom drain but my concern with that is it might look unsightly and the koi might injure themselves. I have been looking into maybe at least improving my filters even if I don’t add a bottom drain. I’ve been thinking about getting the oase biotec screenmatic 2 18000 but I’m not sure if it’s worth the money?
Hi Asep, I don't think there's much difference between seeing a submersible pump to a retrofit bottom drain in the pond. It's a mater of which you prefer. With the screenmatic 2 18000 your still going to have the horrible job of cleaning the foams out once a week, and like you say they are a lot of money. There are better and cheaper filters on the market. Anyway mate, let me know how you get on, Take care, Terry.
@@Wrighty In that case I was thinking of getting an RDF and making a DIY shower filter instead of the screenmatic 2 this summer. And adding the bottom drain next year when I have more time. Would the RDF still work well without a bottom drain or should I just wait to get an RDF until I install a bottom drain? Sorry for all the questions, I have so many 😅
Hi mate, No worries. You can get an RDF and run it from an in pond submersible pond pump. That's not a problem. If you get a pump that can be either in pond or dry out of pond, you can still use it when you do get a bottom drain installed. Terry.
Brilliant work mate its better than the one that's been released by a well known company. Watch this space I bet they bring out a version using your auto clean idea.
Terry, you should work for EA in there R and D department, that’s superb, you’ll be running out of room in your filter house for any more inventions, very well done mate. 👌
Hi Anthony and thanks mate. I don't think EA can afford me lol. That's right mate, I think I'll end up swapping my sheds over lol. Thanks again mate, Terry.
The finefilter seems really good mate. Looking forward to seeing it in full work mode this summer. Did you use to work as an engineer or something? Your builds are fantastic, lovely to see you spend your time doing what you love.
Hi mate and thank you. I am very pleased with the way it's working. No, I don't have an engineering background as such, many many years ago I use to be a car accident repair specialist so that helps a bit. Roll on summer. take care mate, Terry.
@@Wrighty yes, seems like it takes out the very fine stuff you might not even get with fine filterfloss but without the hassle with changing every week. Great design. You are a genius sir love the new up filter looks an works far better than the tempest. I would get yours copy wrighted quick I thinks soon as evolution see yours there going to replicate it an stick a huge koi tax on it 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks mate, Wish I could afford to get it copyrighted mate. They are charging a lot of money for an acrylic tube, 2 end caps and a couple of small valves. Trouble is, if your pond is around 3000 gallon, you need 2 of them. Wow! Thanks mate and take care, Terry.
Hi Terry how are you mate its been ages. Ive binge watched all the videos and the ponds looking great. Im loving the mk2 fines mate how did u make it, bloody brilliant job

Terry you have surpassed yourself yet again. Knocks EA Tempest out of the water think Evolution shud have you designing their equipment. From a proper hobbist welldone Terry 👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Terry, how will the plastic tube stand up in the freezing weather? I know I have to be careful of my RODI filter cartridges as they can crack. I'm sure your tube is a lot thicker but was just wondering. Amazing work as ever and when I have a pond again I will definitely be making one of these for my filter house 😃
Hi Simon, If it's being kept in a filter house it will be fine mate. I wouldn't advise running one of these in the winter outside, as it could freeze, but apart from that it will cool your pond water even more mate. You would have to insulate it really well and then it should be ok. Thanks again mate, take care, Terry.
Very impressed with your version of the tempest. 2 questions please. How often does it need to run a cleaning cycle on your system and how much water goes to waste in 1 cycle?
Hi mate, and thank you. I've been cleaning every 4 days, but as the waters getting better it looks like I can leave it longer. Don't forget, it will have more to do in the summer. At a guess I think around 25 gallon but not 100% sure. Just a guess. Thanks, Terry.
@@Wrighty love the new design. Just thinking but if the fines were allowed to settle after being flushed would the remaining water then be able to be returned back to the pond?
Hi Julian, I haven't tried it mate, but the fines do settle in the bucket, so I would think so mate. I just count it as part of my weekly water change. Terry.
Great video, thank you. Wld you be kind enough to tell us how you expect this apparatus will compare to that foaming thing this replaces? What the foaming thing took out of the water was astonishing, shd this do better. Why the change?
Hi George, and thank you. This filter will take a lot more of the fines out of the water and give better clarity, but the protein skimmer did also take out the proteins as well, where as this one doesn't. I don't suffer too much with foam on my pond that protein causes, and this new filter is also cheaper to run. Hope this explains it a little mate. Take care, Terry.
It was a mixture of fines and proteins in the bucket on the protein skimmer. This new filter is just taking the real fines solids out. The RDF that my water goes through first filters down to 60 micron. So what were catching in this new filter is smaller than that. thanks mate, Terry.
Still on the fence on the upflow filters Terry but yours is catching fine's as to what one would do after the two easy pods in my setup with micro k1 I'm happy as is for now the veg filter hear catch's the last of them for me but it is after the two moving k1 beds so it needs looking at. Keep up the good work that home made kick's the EA Tempest to what it is a over priced tube with a cap at each end
Hi Martyn, and thanks mate. The trouble is with the Tempest is if your pond is anywhere near 3000 gallon you need 2, at that price. Wow! Roll on spring mate. Can't wait to get these covers off. Take care, Terry.
Hi mate, What I'm hoping with mine is, it will do the job of the filter floss, and I have to say at the moment it is looking good. We'll know better when summer gets here, but it's looking promising mate. Terry.
Looking at what you have built Terry its what EA should be selling. And they should be looking into the centre Eazy on a nexus and what they can do to that to improve it. Keep up the good work mate
That's absolutely brilliant Terry !!! When are the plans going on the website? My daughter said your shed is a mess, because your a MAN ! I think you have nailed the mk2 tel that works really well. Got alot better turn over on the media on the cleaning cycle than what EA have on their's. Nice job 👏👌

@@Wrighty Forgot to ask...I see you are using a 60 litre per hour air pump to clean...do you think a 70 litre per hour air pump would be too much
I know mine does give it a really good stir, but I think you should be ok mate. Give it a try and see what happens. You can always add a bleed tap near the air pump and let some of it out to reduce the air output in the chamber. Terry.
Hello Terry I just watch your new update video, am very impressed with your smart work on your tube filter, from Ricardo in Southampton can't wait to make my own thanks to you .👍👍👍

Superb Terry. Was thinking of buying the tempest to run along side my easy pod in my grow on in shed cos I’m feeding quite heavy and it’s a bit too much for the pod getting a lot of fines through. I think I will hold fire for your plans as your design looks for better. Top job 🤙

Great filter love it . Maybe only use the air flush on second clean . . Only a thought
But unfortunately I am not sure my DIY skills are up to the task and if I’ll have enough time since I’m still working on a doctorate degree in pharmacy.😅
I’m really glad found this channel and have been learning so much.
You can now get a retro fit bottom drain which will do the same thing, and it would save you
re-doing your pond. Just a thought mate. This was my previous pond build which was run on a submersible pump:
czcams.com/video/YXePMc9x5fU/video.html thanks again, good luck with all the pond improvements. take care and stay safe, Terry.
Terry.

Hi Barry and thank you mate. Trouble is EA couldn't afford me lol. You take care mate, Terry.
@@Wrighty I see. Was all that muck in the bucket from the protein skimmer actually protein or general muck....or fines too?
Yes Terry alot of money for what it is and is it that much better than a easy in a nexus or a pod that's what i keep asking myself
Thanks mate, take care and stay safe, Terry.
