Weeeeee're back! (with unpopular opinsion #15 I believe). Today we talk everything from viral hits like Espresso, and how it's becoming even more common for artists like Ariana Grande to reference other artists, movies or pop culture moments in their own music videos or red carpet looks. We'll also talk about the logistics of hosting a show like ANTM or drag race, and try to make a connection between Hozier and frozen yogurt of all things.

the kpop one was crazy bc no one is gonna say “you wanna be colombian so bad” when i listen to kali uchis, but if i listen to kpop im a koreaboo? 😭
It honestly comes from other fans taking it too far. Once that happened I too took a step back from kpop. Shawol forever though 🥰😂
And it's really ignorant when you remember a big reason Kpop is popular is because it takes influence from western pop/hip-hop sounds. It's not even "you wanna be Korean so bad." (Though the cultural appreciation vs culture vulture convo is something else entirely.)
@@OpticalSorcererlol yessss,i was just about to say the same thing about a lot of it biting off black culture to begin with😭
@@LisaSantana15 From what I understand, East Asia, while ethnically diverse, is racially homogenous, and results in a lot of ignorance (rather than racism) towards other races. As such, they don't understand the dangers/harm of perpetuating stereotypes about black culture. Plus I think said ignorance is why so many of their fans give them a pass; if a western artist appropriated black culture (which they have, usually a white artist), American fans would NOT stand for it.
And Kpop sounds like this because South Korea's population is small (and still in decline) and they wanted a larger audience. Given that Japan is also seeing a population decline, I wonder if Jpop will also start to break into the western music scene--and if we'll see the same issues.
I used to irritate ppl by going slightly off topic and asking them “so you think I wanna be a computer too?” when they would say this to me about kpop. I am a huge house/techno fan so clearly since l have to be something to understand, I am a computer. Never got a single question about kpop again 😂😂
I remember when Bong Joon Ho won an Oscar for his film Parasite. For context the movie was in Korean and became the first foreign film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. But he said this in his acceptance speech "Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films." This can be applied to any language, but I also think about a show like Squid Game, how many people watched that show when it was in Korean.
Korean horror films (as a Romero fan, I'll always hype up Train To Busan as the most gut wrenching zombie media of the Zombie Craze in the 2010s) are the gold standard imo, and even tho The Academy doesnt give horror the love it deserves, i hope that foreign horror continues to find audiences in the States! Its an amazing starting place for learning about the history of other countries and helps humanize people we don't hear a lot about in other media in the US
@@crystalsnow1138 and he was right! Also, it’s a great way to watch something new and not be on ur phone the whole time bc u have to read 😭
The kpop one-the way it's phrased-is very xenophobic in nature. It sends a message that one should only listen to music from ones own culture, and if not you're not just odd, you're also a self-hating "traitor" of sorts. This is dangerous thinking. One can appreciate other cultures' art while still being proud of one's own.
They think you should listen to music from your own culture and also american music
And there are literally people who judge you for listening to or enjoying anything not English if you’re English
It's an interesting discussion. I understand the sentiment of "how can you enjoy it if you don't understand it?" (As an American whose dad loves hip-hop, my mom always told me to understand what rappers are saying rather than just nodding to the beat, so that kinda stuck with me, and I never got into foreign-language music much because the lack of understanding creates a dissonance for me). Though telling someone they aren't allowed to enjoy MUSIC is absurd to me.
I read somewhere that a reason that celebrities don't have concerts in India (aside from poverty and conservative perspectives) is because many Indian states prefer to listen to their own area's music rather than other states, let alone going to see a concert from a foteigner. No idea how much of that is accurate, but it's dusturbing to see how nationalism can turn to gatekeeping so quickly.
As a music major who often listens to instrumental music for fun, it’s kinda insane to say there’s no point of listening to music if you can’t relate to the lyrics.
Yup I do get tired of that logic, as if lyrics trump MUSIC so much. I guess that's true for the right person, still the music is the magic ✨✨✨
that’s so true but also i feel like instrumentals have been getting worse recently. they used to be able to have their own melody aside from the singer and were often orchestrated, and the tiktok musicians simply being less experienced makes sense for them but even for huge artists like taylor swift, if you compare midnights instrumentals to even folklore/ evermore they feel… incomplete. almost more like ambient music than a song.
music is a universal language!
Eh I think for some genres / types of songs lyrics are very important ie lyrical rap songs, storytelling songs etc. Like if you don't know the language you can still appreciate it sonically but you're missing out on a lot
@@MsMarmima For sure I agree. We're just suggesting that the music pulls you in first usually, the sound. The story or message will hopefully build on the song, make us want to listen 💓
the kpop one is wild....you hear song , song catchy , you google lyrics meaning you understand the song...I thought that's how people learn stuff?
The entire world streams english songs, her take is so silly
I- K-pop contains like 75% English lyrics nowadays anyways 😭😭😂
Lmao no Fr especially Hybe groups
Like I did not become a fan of this and want to love another language to hear mine AND. It not be good English lyrics.
@@lrgcokewithlemonK-pop isn’t the genre for you if you wanna drown out English. It’s been heavy in English and western influence for many years now.
@@gummy5862 well, I’ve been a fan for 9 years now, so I know what it was like back when it mostly wasn’t English. I don’t listen to many new kpop artists anymore outside of newjeans, various split Loona girls and the occasional random song of ggs. I hate the push for English songs bc they aren’t good.
Many years I don't think I've discovered BTS 2016 and it really wasn't the lyrics that do now. Not just thematically but also there's no ties to their own language or relevant things specific to Korea like they used to do @@gummy5862
Not that one opinion gatekeeping international music 😭. I listen to kpop, jpop, Latin pop and I don’t understand half of those songs lyrically. Even English music, on first listen, I barely catch the lyrics or the meaning of many songs. It’s not JUST about lyrics it’s about how the music makes you feel emotionally and evoking a response. People can’t just enjoy music now damn lmaoo
This! I’m a beat girl not a lyric girl lol. As long as the vibes are good I’m streaming!
I am FOREVER a music person, the lyrics to be just add on. I love international music, I love domestic, but most importantly I LOVE THAT BEAT
i was immediately turned into a fan of hikaru utada when i first heard hatsukoi, but way before she came along, i was already into sheena ringo, daoko, monkey majik, lamp, etc.
@@gleamingtwinklingandsoinvitingYes Utada is great and so many other artists doing "foreign music" can get us infatuated ❤ I don't think I'd be the same without that discovery 😅
i mean she asked for unpopular opinions and they delivered 😂 i like hearing actual unpopular opinions
I find the kpop opinion so interesting (and ridiculous) cause no one would ever say this to a non-english speaking person listening to music in english, which tends to be way more common.
That makes me think of that quote where J Balvin said he fell in love with American songs with English lyrics early as a boy but spoke none himself yet! Namie Amuro loved Missy Elliott without being a native English speaker herself, and Shakira made tribute performances to Madonna as a young girl in her home country. 👋
I thought the same thing. Especially since it's not just about music, but also about movies, series, books, etc. It reminded me of the Parasite director's speech at the Oscars. Language differences shouldn't be a border between cultures, especially in music.
19:27 today’s froyo craze is BUBBLE TEA!!!
the way i was also thinking that too! i was debating whether or not we had one, and if so are we going to see that trend die out anytime soon, and the closet thing i could think of is Boba
@@hh_hh-ik5gyoh this is a good one… not much of a boba girl but I love me a fruit tea!
Omg lmaooo, When you were talking about artists and labels at the end, it randomly reminded me of that one time Rita Ora tweeted "If this tweet gets 100k likes I'll drop my new song Monday" and it only got like 1,000 likes, and she quickly claimed she was hacked after lmaooo!!
@@sweetieecakee I think about that tweet all the time lmao
i swear only an american person could call listening to music in a foreign language weird bc the rest of the world listens to english music without speaking the language and no one questions it. when i was growing up, all i could hear on the radio was music i couldnt understand until i learned english later on. american and british entertainers (mj, britney, the beatles just to name a few) have always been super popular around the world and a big chunk of their international fanbase doesnt understand them. it's genuinely normal
For me a hit just is a song that EVERYONE knows. They don’t technically have to know the lyrics but they recognize the song and name.
I would say a lot of people know. Because even when it comes to the most popular songs not everyone knows them.
the kpop one is crazy especially as someone who basically doesn’t listen for the lyrics in ANY language, whether or not i like a song depends 99% on the production, vocals, structure etc rather than the lyrics. a song can sound good even if i don’t know what it means
The billboard one is kind of 50/50. Sometimes a song hitting #1 is because it’s actually a hit. Sometimes it’s a hit because the fanbase is big and they’re the only ones streaming it. Or the song can go number 1 based off of controversy. Or all of these things can be true at once.
i think "hozier feels like froyo" means that his music feels nostalgic and/or while he's still a great artist and he's still popular he's not exactly "ice cream" levels of ubiquity
28:03 that’s a damn lie because people with limited taste across various mediums are always insufferable and miserable. It’s very much the opposite 😭
No Fr and they have a superiority complex
Facts, like WTH.
We definitely need to go. Back where an era was a moment and lasted for up to 1 year and a half or longer
As much as I would love to see a newer artist grow into image or spend more than 1 album in an era/phase, I don’t think its pheasible in the current music landscape. People’s attention span has decrease over the years to a point where if an artist is not changing something every 5 seconds, people get bored or start to demonize them by saying “she only has one sound” blah blah blah blah. Then the label is quick to drop them or not promote them as much because they arent doing the numbers like they used to. So I feel like the current music industry is not supportive of the whole character development of an artist’s music image.
@@arenerys So true… we’re always so worried about what’s “next”
Now this might be the autism but I actually hate when artists change eras??? I like me an artist with only one sound. Like I completely stopped listening to Billie Eilish after her rebrand bc it was just NOT it for me.
This is why I say that streaming isn’t necessarily a great way to show that an artist is good or amazing. Any song esp with TikTok can be a hit but it doesn’t mean it’s good (collectively because I know music is subjective). Also, streaming mainly only helps those with strong fanbases and who are already mainstream. Singers like Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, etc will always chart high on billboard because they are established mainstream artists with a dedicated fanbase. With dedicated fanbases, if they want their favorite artists to be on top they will literally do whatever they can to make sure they get that number 1 even if the work isn’t necessarily good (example: the swifties with TTPD).
I agree with the opinion about teasing new projects too early SO MUCH! I saw an announcement on Twitter that Jordan Peele is gonna make a movie that'll be out next October!!! Literally wtf would I wanna know that?! There's no reason to tease something that you haven't even STARTED let alone FINISHED!!! I see the same thing on Tiktok all the time. A 20-30 second snippet of a song comes out, and the song either never comes out, or when it does come out months later, everybody's over it already. Teasing something unfinished needs to stop expeditiously🙄🙄🙄
The actually very common. Movies going into production where they’re even announcing that they’re in talks with a director and haven’t cast any actors are announced all the time. Hell, I still remember when the first X-Men cast was announced and it took well over a year for it bro be out.
@@charitychapman3181 I would itchhh when I saw a great teaser for a movie and then it’s like “…coming in 2 years” what am I gonna do w that omg
The kpop one really made the whole comment section mad lolol
As someone who cannot listen to songs unless I like the lyrics, there is such a thing as 'looking up a translation'. I could write books about the lyricism of some of the foreign songs I listen to, just based on reading the translation a million times.
And there are also a lot of people who don't care about lyrics and just want to enjoy the music. People can relate to scat, even though it's literally nonsense.
The kpop opinion is so shallow. Just because it’s a different language, then you can’t be a part of it? You can’t enjoy something because it’s different? I know this person does not have fun in life. Deciding how you can enjoy things based on if you understand it or not is ridiculous. I don’t understand Simlish, but I’m not about to completely disregard the sims series (a silly example)
I am always so appreciative of how well spoken you are, the way you articulate your opinions, etc.
@@aminkardovic8302 Thank you 🫶🏾
the tiktok argument is mind numbing and i’m glad you agree it’s practically just the radio now. like… and when it comes to the “parts in a song are made for tiktok” you could say about so many 2010s songs. Dark Horse, Black Widow, Boom Clap, like i dont see the difference
What a weird take that kpop one was lol, how being open to other peoples culture is something bad?
9:46 I think the more interesting conversation here is less about _whether_ a song is a hit and more about _how_ it became a hit. Cuz like you said, if a dedicated fanbase boosts a song to number 1, it is undeniably a hit by definition. But is that because the fans actually like the song, or because they just like the artist? And even when a song does reach number 1, does it have the longevity to stay there?
I have been listening to JPop for 20+ years and have recently dabbled into KPop. When I was a kid and told people what kind of music I listened to, they all sounded exactly like that commenter. It got to the point where I almost kept what I listened to a secret because of all the weird looks and questions I would get. I’m actually kind of glad that KPop has become so popular because it doesn’t seem so weird or socially unacceptable to listen to music in a different language. From my perspective, even if I don’t always understand the language, a lot of times, I can feel the meaning in how the artist sings and in the production. But, for some people, lyrics are important in how they connect to a song and to an artist and that’s okay. At the end of the day, music is subjective and we just gotta let people like what they like and not make a fuss about it.
omg the makeup one is so real. I dont even wear makeup anymore but the trade for skincare kinda makes me sad - why is my 15 year old cousin buying anti aging products?!?! if teenagers are interested in cosmetics it's like... you should be wearing glitter eyeshadow from the drugstore at that age 😭😭
12:10 i’ve been starting to leave my house with a smoky eye cause that look goes with a lot of my outfits
I'm German and when I was a kid there was barely any German pop music out there that was popular. Listening to German Schlager or Volksmusik was considered an old people thing. So back then it was the default to listen to English speaking music. We also always had some amount of crossover from French, Italian and Spanish -speaking artists, especially in the late 2000s. In the last couple of years German speaking music has become more and more popular again, but tbh it's usually not my cup of tea, so I'm still over here listening to mostly English and Spanish, occasionally French songs. I also speak all of these languages to varying extent, so maybe I need to branch out, haha!
@@TheSkinnyZ for some reason I thought you were English, lmao! But exactly- imagine having to “learn” the language every time you wanna hear a new song… so silly. But if music encourages you to want to learn a new language, hey, not a bad thing
In case anyone sees this, I've just now re-discovered Medina. She had some amount of mainstream success in Europe in the 2010s. She sings in Danish & English. More often than not, she releases her songs in each language separately. She's so good! If y'all like electronic dance pop, you need to check her out! My current obsession is Danser For Mig Selv! 🤩
We're in the time that fast music is popular and we have new music every other day. Eras don't really last long anymore unless you're an "older" artist or a more known person. The visuals also are getting repetitive when it comes to homages in videos or fashion. We have artists like Beyoncé, Gaga, Katy Perry and etc. they were bringing in different and new takes in videos and that's almost gone.
Every time I hear about froyo the only thing I can think of is that Liv and Maddie song.
im not the only one 😂
I love froyo
Song length obviously isn't a deciding factor for song quality, but imo a bridge is oftentimes the best part of a song and usually it's the first part that gets left out in short songs. ☹️
14:50 some of the best songs I've heard in my life are foreign-language. Whoever said that take is the definition of close-minded
"Girl, you're glowing!"
"Girl, I'm sweating."
10:39 a lot of fanbases are guilty of mass streaming and buying songs and projects for stan twitter bragging rights even though they know damn well the project in question is mediocre at best
I’m probably a bit older than your usual demo (born in 1981) and I feel like I was born at the perfect time for me. Im just old enough to remember MJ becoming the biggest thing in the world and the heyday of Whitney and Prince. I got to watch hip hop go from a fringe genre to the biggest genre in the world. I got to watch 80s hair metal get phased out for 90s alternative and grunge. But in a general sense I had an analog childhood and digital adulthood. I grew running around in the woods and meadows, playing in the creek, making up games and riding bikes with my friends but we had the internet when I was in high school. I love that I got to have these kinda old school experiences as a kid but I can now order my groceries from the comfort of my couch on my phone and have someone bring them to me. I do miss 90s gas prices tho lol when I started driving in 1997 gas was 85 cents a gallon 😂
@@missliss2581able you’re in good company here!! Good portion of my audience is 80s babies lol
I can remember bands like The Jam and Iron Maiden getting number 1 singles purely because of their strong fan bases as they didn't get radio play (or very little) and that was in the 80s! I do feel sometimes a song is heavily promoted but I don't see any problem with fanbases streaming their favs. The chart companies change their rules every now and then to keep up.
regarding the makeup entry, i work at sephora and there is absolutely a shift in how people consume cosmetic products. while natural looks and skincare is what we get requested the most, people still manage to overconsume, both in makeup and skincare. clients will purchase multiples of the same type of product just because it's trendy even though it all ends up performing the same as what they already own. they'll have 5 different bronzers, but they gotta have that new patrick ta one because everyone says it's soooo good. biggest difference between consumer behaviour before and after the pandemic is that before, people would come in and ask for recommendations on products based on what they already own, but now people come in and ask for a specific product and don't want any recommendations.
i love how you said "we already have everything there is to have, how many more palettes or lipsticks can come out?", that is absolutely how i feel about makeup in general, but somehow new releases seem to still sell out regularly just because it's hyped up online
a really unpopular opinion I have is that I don't think album rollouts always matter. I mean with radical optimism people were complaining that the rollout was confusing and dua lipa promised things she couldn't deliver on but the rollout was still good in my opinion even if it didn't deliver 100%. the final product-the music-is what's more important.

the kpop one is so crazy cause like... as a brazilian who immigrated to the states, i assure u everyone is listening to english music without knowing a lick of english... most of the world does. why is it that when someone is not centering america/english speaking countries in whatever they do, its suddenly "cringe" or unacceptable? make it make sense.
in regards to the makeup one, i think celebrities have swung the other way on the pendulum (into the clean girl look) bc its a way to seperate themselves from the masses. this eventually makes the general public want to emulate it whether its to be "trendy" or "cool," but at the end of the day, we're all looking at celebrities and following what they do to get closer to them, whether it be parasocially or to look like the ruling class (albeit subconsciously).
anyways i think american makeup specifically has gotten boring tho, so i just tend to look internationally to see what other people are doing. whether it be in england or china or india, i feel like each country has different makeup trends and its so fun to see! picking and choosing what i like about different makeup trends is what makes it fun for me and the end product is my own kinda concoction of different influences which is SO FUN. we just need to stop being influenced so easily and stop thinking abt what other ppl think abt us. BRING BACK INDIVIDUALISM!!!
about the interpretation of music and how an artist shouldn't tell people "no, this song is about this and that, you can't interpret it on your own", I totally agree. there's a song which may be interpreted as a song about a toxic ex but I instantly associated it with my father). the song is "Sarcasm" by Get Scared. the first line says "you've got me shaking from the way you're talking", it can be both about a toxic, abusive lover or an abusive parent. both can be true at once, which is the case for me
wtf is that kpop opinion LMAOOOO- music is universal, even when language is not! You can love production, vocals, visuals, etc. and STILL appreciate it
if billboard charts and numbers dictate your music taste, you are missing out on the experience of the art
That KPOP comment was rage bait lol 😂 Most if not all K-POP music videos have the translations available as of 2015 if you turn on CC and set it to English or a couple others for that matter. Lol they WANT you to know what they are saying lol.

For the deluxe thing, I actually agree with them. Tbh I never understood the point of a deluxe album that comes out like a week after the initial release with just 2 or 3 new songs. Like why not just put them on the album? An instance I can think of, off the top of my head where the deluxe tracks were released separately was with Melanie Martinez’ K-12 (I know there’s a deluxe too) but the After School EP was basically a collection of deluxe tracks. And it feels so much better to me, it feels like we’re actually getting new music and not just “oh I forgot a couple of tracks so here’s a deluxe version”.

fiona apple’s cover for the idler wheel i believe was one of her drawings she made during the album. if visuals are a part of your process, sometimes the most representative artwork comes during the process as opposed to after. but if its just a photoshoot, i agree it makes more sense to make all those choices once the album’s finished
19:22 I was thinking about Boba tea? That was big for a minute but seemed to have came and gone too.
I love when an artist (of any medium) explains their interpretation, concept, ideas behind their work i find it really interesting. But with like for example a painting in a museam everybody who sees it has its own interpretation, how it makes them feel etc and in the end not only both are valid POV but also for the audience maybe their own individual takeaway is in the end what sticks for them
There’s nothing wrong with liking music/media from another culture, but we can’t deny that some Americans’ interest in Kpop does veer toward fetishism. I feel there are dynamics there that need to be explored regarding why it’s become so popular in comparison to other media, and historical fetishism of Asians and Asian culture.
15:38 so this person is basically saying that in order to enjoy music and have it resonate with you - for starters - it needs to have lyrics (not true!) and it needs to be in a language you can understand. NUCLEAR TAKE. As someone who listens to a lot of instrumentals as well as foreign music, a song DOES NOT need to be in a language you understand for it to be enjoyable or resonate with you. Music is LITERALLY the language that everyone can understand (even deaf people!) it brings us all together.
the kpop opinion..😂😂 lyrics arent the sole aspect of music. Classical music has no words and is an everlasting genre!
I've seen a few English speaking reactors who get so frustrated when they don't understand the lyrics to a Korean song and I'm just screaming the whole reaction turn on the subtitles. And then I've seen others who will say they don't like subtitles on as it takes away from the music video, but then complain they didn't understand the song. My favorite is when people react to Mic Drop by BTS and they will say I didn't understand a word they said when a good 80 percent of the song is in English, I even saw a reactor say this about Dynamite by BTS which is a fully English song. It's just such a weird take that just because one doesn't speak a language they can't find out what the lyrics mean. I mean so many people all over the world who don't speak English listen to English songs. When people loved Despacito I didn't see many people complaining they didn't know what they lyrics meant.
I would say the closest equivalent to the frozen yogurt craze is the current bubble tea trend.
10:17 OOP- I literally was talking about this with some coworkers the other day. People aren’t giving a fuck about the billboard top spots anymore. It’s no longer representing what people are actually listening to…
In my opinion, references should be more diverse and eclectic than what we tend to see. For instance, both Gaga and Katy sampled “What They Say” for “Sour Candy” and “Swish Swish” respectively. There’s also Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” and Charli’s “You Used To Know Me” both sampling “Show Me Love.” I like all of the songs, some more than others, but sometimes it feels as though the idea is “let’s make a 90s house inspired song” and then they stop at the most popular songs for samples. Maybe I’m just bitter because I want someone to sample “It Feels So Good” by Sonique. Maybe she doesn’t even want people sampling in. Anyway, I want samples that introduce me to cool music from the past-not just stuff that scratches my nostalgia itch.
@@KorbinJones How has the sour candy/ swish swish connection gone over my head all these years omg?
In my opinion when a song streamed by a fanbase and it gets numbers on charts it is a hit, 'cause it is a lot of work to build a dedicated fanbase that will constantly support you afterall. What is not a hit it's a song that labels put on YT ads, Spotify popular playlist and adjust streaming services algorithm to make it mass streamed, by paying money to streaming services
i was about to comment about that wild ass take about KPOP and international music, happy to see so many of us found it weird af
I forgot to mention this under the community tab relating to unpopular opinions, but I think the vocal trinity is interchangeable. I know it’s not really “official” since I am not sure what the criteria is outside of vocal performance. The vocal trinity as people know is Mariah, Whitney, and Celine. I may get chewed up for this, but I would replace Celine with Toni Braxton since the vocal trinity covered the divas that ran the 90s. I’m not well versed in Celine’s catalog and I am not discrediting her as a vocalist, but it push came to shove, I easily would replace Celine with Toni 🤷🏾♀️. Toni Braxton is never given her props and not appreciated in Gen Z for me idk
Toni Braxton is definitely underrated

I kinda agree about Céline. I'm a fan of hers but almost exclusively of her French efforts, her music in English sounds too sugary for me. On the Toni side, I agree, she's amazing, and she would've been bigger if she didn't have lupus.
The K-pop one is crazy because like I always look up the translated version of the song and that usually dictates whether I enjoy the song more or less. Of course some instrumentals go crazy but a big factor of the song for me is what the lyrics are saying lol
25:00, i remember Rihanna showed anti cover back in december 2015 a month before anti release, the album was done on january 22nd i think several days before the album dropped, but i feel like she already had a concept in mind so thats why she presented the cover in prior since the album was pushed back and there werre ANTI diary rooms which was connected to the album cover

THE MAKEUP TAKE THANK YOUUU!!!!!! Ifgaf if y’all are doing clean girl aesthetics or blueberry milk or whateverrrr I’m gonna have fun w my makeup, I’m gonna be colorful, I’m gonna be extra, I am going to show my artistic skill & my personality!!!! Don’t be boring!!!!

I hope you have a nice weekend!!
@@ctuallynice thank you, hope yours is good too 💕
About that person who commented about the kpop one, it's kind of irony because i'm southeast asian and all in my playlists are all western songs lol
28:38 me with victoria monet. i saw her perform on my mama and it was over. i enjoyed the song before, just didn’t look into victoria
honestly, the kpop opinion used to be my take before i became a kpop fan many years ago. i was confused why people would listen to music in a different language that they don’t understand. but one integral part of any art is that the message can be told without any words, with just vocals or instrumental. also kpop is also heavily about visuals, performance, and personality, not just music. so i feel like people who say this just really don’t understand how different kpop is compared to any other music genre, and are just very narrow minded in terms of music. music is about the vibe, you don’t need to completely understand it to like it. and if you’re curious about the meaning of the song, google is free lmfao
I can’t imagine a TikTok music award. But I don’t know.
I’ve always been a natural makeup girlie. I do not look good with a beat face 😂 so I’m for the trend but also my friends still beat their face 😂 we all walk to the beat of our own drum never following trends. The trends end up catching up with us! Ex clean girl aesthetic!
2010’s makeup was seriously one of the worst periods aesthetic-wise. It wasn’t for me but Idk, I don’t think people want to go back to having that yellow dijon mustard foundation caked on to their faces.
oh i love frozen yoghurt and yes it dissapeared out of nowhere
i had froyo yesterday btw so good
An interesting example of a deluxe album to me, was Rare by Selena Gomez. She added the songs and changed the albums track list, which I thought was cool. But generally, I remember deluxe albums starting out as “here’s a couple songs that I recorded during the sessions for this album that don’t really fit the theme of the album, but I wanna put them out anyway.”
are there people who genuinely only listen to one artist ????? like not just a favourite artist but literally the only ONE they listen to? i cant imagine living like that
I feel like some Swifties are like that, I have a friend who only listens to TS, which I can kinda get it, since she has so many albums and some genre variations.
I mostly just listen to the same songs so I understand.
I've seen some people say they only play music occasionally if they're in that mood, and what they pick for the occasion is just one or maybe two artists to play then they're happy. They say they are not heavy music listeners so they will be easily content that way..
Music is its own language and can connect people. I grew up in a very Latino neighborhood (i should know Spanish, but i don't except the bad words lol)and in a touristy area with a lot of international visitors. My friends and family listened to a lot of reggae, dancehall, and reggaeton music. When I was in middle school, my dad liked a group called 2NE1. Idk if they were Korean. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking another culture or country's music. Just maybe check the translation when singing out loud so you know you're not singing something you wouldn't normally ex. Singing a curse word and you don't curse in English
I like your dad's taste! 2NE1's one of my favorite Korean girl groups ❤
dad has extraordinary taste 😌🙏🏼
Music goes way beyond understanding lyrics. Without knowing lyrics, you can typically understand the vibe of the song. Tu Foto by Ozuna is one of my favorite songs, I know what the song is about because it’s one of the few Spanish songs I can translate enough to get the meaning (+ the music video). Without knowing the lyrics, the music video tells a lot about the song. There are songs by Korean artists that send waves of euphoria through my body because how good the sound/production is, or make me sad because I can feel the pain or heartbreak through tone. I can always look up lyrics or meanings of songs in foreign languages but 90% of the time I don’t bc I can still enjoy it thoroughly. Freshman year of high school, the only things I was listening to was British pop artists and Korean pop/hiphop, it’s one of my favorites times to look back on music wise
Love the whole comment section dragging that kpop opinion
The kpop one is wild because by that logic, no in other parts of the world would have a reason to listen to or be fans of Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Bruno Mars, etc. Bad Bunny wouldn’t be the star he is in non spanish speaking countries. Like huh?
Kpop one is crazy lol I’m listening to the beat and the way they sing. Koop is pop music and pop music is for everyone. The English in kpop is so English speaking people listen to it ON PURPOSE lol
I’m a 90s baby and a 2000s kid. Being born in the late 90s, I can be a millennial and a Gen Z 😂😂 I get to play both sides of the fence when it comes generations, and I love it!! But there are times where I do wish I was born earlier than I was, just so I could experience and see what life was like without today’s technology.
I think the craving for nostalgia has somehow inhibited innovation which is why we’re generally so negative and sceptical about modern pop culture/the arts.
I also feel like there’s an undertone of classism to people complaining about things that are accessible to the masses/have become democratised. Why is something’s quality dictated by the nature of its accessibility to people?
11:04 I always agreed with this 1 don’t get me wrong that doesn’t mean every #1 song is bad but having that spot dose not make it a good song it just means there fanbase is active or payola but yk lol
When you talked about interpretation of songs that’s how I’m with SZA aka my Scorpio sister ( her birthday is right after me ) on SOS there so many songs I take pieces of and apply to me ( self love thing ) while my girl SZA talking about her self love and a nigga and I don’t relate to the relationship part of the song.
I think songs on hot 100 like lose control, I had some help, and lovin on me, and more are being pushed by 50-70 million radio that's how a lot of songs go no.1 nowadays so they're only radio hits but there's some organic hits
14:51 the irony of the person bringing their opinion to your page a black American woman. Like ???
The tiktok one yes, literally I like a song but because its every second tiktok it gets overplayed for my taste withour me myself overplaying it
Well, sometimes the fanbase stream their artist's song not because they like it, but to prove their artist is on the top or can break records. Look at Taylor's new album - it's a garbage and even her fans know it but they stream it because they are dedicated to her. That means, some songs are not hits, but just because fans are brainwashed, they do everything possible to beat their fav's rivals
Not true. Alot of us genuinely love the album. Are there fans who would just stream it for the charts? Sure. But most of us really like it.
I’m not even a Taylor fan but to call the album garbage is pure bs. Half the songs are great lyric-wise but the other half feels like filler.
theres a lot of words to describe ttpd and garbage is not one, pick here:
bloated
too long
messy
mid
meh
okay
boring
50/50
fan service
but imo, i like the messiness of it
While it is true that fanbases will just mass stream to prove to get their favs on top which is very annoying (and just shows me that they do this for themselves and not for their favs) but there are swifties who do genuinely love TTPD tho not all of them are gonna find it garbage. Like yeah fans will fake love the album form their favs but let’s also remember that there’s fans who’ll genuinely enjoy it
Typing as I watch: a deluxe album, being separate than the actual album is something can support….kinda. Maybe like an EP of what wasn’t on the album.
Like Amine did with ONEPOINTFIVE or TWOPOINTFIVE after dropping GOODFORYOU and Limbo. Like not a full album- but it’s .5 of what was just released.
Bring back frozen yogurt bc they all disappeared? FACTSSSSS🎉
I can find it cringe that people say "you like kpop? you can't even speak Korean, you can't relate to the song". ehm, translations exist. that's all I have to say. or no, I may not be able to relate to everything because not everything can be translated to other languages, the original meaning can get lost in translation but those are exceptions. and people can listen to music just for the vibes. as a kid I didn't know English (just started to learn it) but no one batted an eye when all non English speaking people were enjoying English music without speaking or understanding English. should we consume only the music that's in languages we speak? do I have to learn Korean to be allowed to listen to kpop to understand it right away? I don't think so so I think the original statement "you can't relate because you don't speak the language" is flawed
