today we're talking the bops on brat!!! ofc we'll talk some of the singles like 360 and von dutch, but we'll also delve into some of the b-sides like Sympathy is a Knife, Girl, so confusing, and Everything is Romantic. Honestly, I think we talk about all of brat, including the deluxe tracks Hello Goodbye, Guess, and the long-awaited Spring Breakers. A time was had, yet another win for 2024 pop albums!!

I love how Charli xcx is tapping into being a party girl with the way she’s doing events and stuff but also allowing herself to be extremely vulnerable and rip away the party girl look 💚
I always found it interesting that Charli sold her vulnerable songs to other artists. Like Rare and Hurts like hell.
@@marohoh she also writes for Raye too I’ve heard :)
💚
Finally a woman reacting and commenting on this album
girl it just dropped
@@katrinamack444LMAO
THIS COMMENT RIGHT HERE!!!
she ticked every box she needed to for this one. people who party a lot often do so bc they’re trying to escape from what’s going on in their personal lives so hearing the more authentic bits made this come full circle in a way that other pop/dance oriented albums don’t. she actually tapped into the authentic reasoning for craving escapism while still doing what she does best and delivering a masterpiece. she did so while amplifying her signature electropop sound by paying homage to the 2000s mcbling and 2010s indie sleeze crazes so it sounds somewhat nostalgic but with a new twist that only she is capable of. everything from the hyperpop she’s become the face of to acid house to techno to garage to pure dance pop, not one stone was left unturned in the vast landscape of electronic music that she applied here. she is the trojan horse for pop music in this current day and age and i’m so happy she’s getting all this acclaim for the new album. i cannot stop listening to it!!!
This might be a crazy opinion but I honestly see this album as the little sister to Britney Spears' Blackout. The album is bold, honest, and chaotic in a good way. The narrative is so well-constructed and I love the perspective that she put surrounding fame, which is why it reminds me a bit of Blackout.
def not a crazy opinion, charli said in an interview a few years ago that blackout is actually her favorite album of all time so it would make sense that she was heavily influenced by it while creating brat! :)
nah thats valid
ur takes are out of the box but somehow im like always nodding
@@naomi.cannibal appreciate it! though I just like sharing my thoughts (tastefully) here and there
I've been listening to blackout a lot lately and when I first heard this album one of my first thoughts was immediately connecting the two! Now I'm finding it funny that you mention it bc I'm glad I wasn't the only one! I adore the blackout album it's one of my favorites of all time and I think it's like the Bible of pop music lmao, especially club style music
It's kinda surprising how mature the lyrics are for a dance pop album. Perhaps, it's because Charli isn't in her 20s anymore, but an 18-year old like me wouldn't be able to relate to this record and I mean it positively. It reflects Charli's age and experience in a way that made me think about what's going on in my parents' heads and do they feel similar emotions.
Genres don't define lyricism, and it's always sad to me when someone associates pop music with bad writing when many pop stars are great writers.
@@OpticalSorcerer I kinda agree with you and kinda don't, mostly, because you made a wrong assumption about my original comment. My apologies if I weren't clear enough.
What I meant is, dance pop is young people's music. It doesn't mean the writing is bad. It just means it's meant to appeal to a certain audience and that audience skews towards people my age. It's interesting to hear somebody work in that lane and deal with topics as connected to adulthood as "Brat"'s are.
Secondly, I want to clarify that I meant dance pop specifically in my original statement. Pop music is incredibly diverse. You can't make any generalisations about it.
Last but not the least, I disagree with the idea that genre doesn't define lyricism. There are whole genres defined by nothing but their lyrics. Say, conscious hip-hop or singer-songwriter. There are no genres that necessitate bad writing, but there are genres that necessitate good writing or writing about specific subjects. That being said, I get what you were trying to say and I didn't mean to imply that pop music is lesser.
@@zhenia2511 It's a shame that there's a perception that dance-pop is "young people's music" (even though Charli is still young), but I'm glad Charli is defying those misconceptions.
@@OpticalSorcerer I would be interested in hearing more dance pop albums dealing with adulthood as well. They are unfortunately quite rare though. That's the whole point I tried to make originally.
I agree, I love “growing up” w some of these artists, I would’ve been like okay?? if some of these came out when I was like 16 but now I’m like damn, too real lol
“Fall in love with George, a gain and a gain” made me BOL LMAOOOO
I had to sry
I just love how multifaceted she comes across as on the album. It’s a real 360 view (pun intended) of both the persona and the person in a way that genuinely feels compelling and evolutionary, like she’s dissecting both in a way that they feed into each other. Also love how candid she is on it like the lyrics are so frank and kinda meta and hard cutting and overall it’s just a major bop so… loving life (and the video :))
I agree wholeheartedly with this take. The album is so multidimensional in how Charli plays into and yet simultaneously deconstructs the party girl persona she's been known for. We get to see the cracks in her seemingly impenetrable armor in some songs and it's raw, conflicting and vulnerable. Haven't had a pop album that's captivated me this much in a while.
Apple was my favorite song on the album, and it definitely belongs on party girl peeled back. It is about looking back on your relationship with your parents as you grow up and I'm pretty sure it is confirmed this was about her relationship with her parents. It is a good segue into I think about it all the time, where she discusses wanting to have children but worrying it is always the wrong time or about her ability to be a mother. Realizing she is more similar to her parents than she thought growing up has made her worried about having children herself. She doesn't feel understood by her parents or didn't at some point in her life and what if her children end up the same way. Maybe I am looking at this song through too much of a personal lens but I almost cried listening to this once I read through the lyric a few times. I love the lines about just wanting to leave to the airport or to drive, as a teen when I would just leave and drive around after a fight with parents.
I really enjoy how this album explores her -- often fraught -- relationships with other women. Charli is seen as such a "girl's girl" with her endless stream of successful collaborations, but it's interesting to hear her in conflict with other women, exploring jealousy/envy in "sympathy is a knife," disconnection in "girl, so confusing," and grief/guilt in "so i."
i feel like she's rly pulled inspo from jpop tbh!! especially the fast piano in mean girls and apple. she's made songs with kyary and yasutaka nakata whos done music with sheena ringo so i wouldnt say its far fetched. as a vocaloid fan (iykyk) it warm my heart someone puts effort into merging all of these genres bc its soo campy and c*nty. weird, maybe but i LOVE hearing it with party girl music!!!!!it deserves to be heard
The frequent collaborators on the production like A. G. Cook and rest of PC Music are probably inspired by many things but jpop is definitely one of those, and AG has worked with a few jpop artists at this point (including Hikaru Utada)
U are not wrong at all! She has talked abt being really into the music of perfume and tommy february6 back in superlove promo (of which the mv was recorded in tokyo) and that was even before working with kyary, not to mention that one of the xcxworld leaks was a bounce version with kyary vocals, charlis keen sense of pop music comes from a deep appreciation of the genre in many many capacities
@@annacarollina7703 YYyyyyyyYEEEEESSSSS
It’s honestly so crazy to see so many more people getting into Charli I’ve been a Stan since sucker era lmao I’ve always known she was something special since day one. So proud of her, STREAM BRAT💚
I say this is Charli’s ARTPOP in a weird way (except it’s being appreciated in its time which makes me so happy). And I think about it all time reminds me of Lily Allen, I could hear it being something she released during No Shame
if you told me when she dropped that terrible album cover that she'd have the most critically acclaimed project of the year I would have laughed at you lol.
Now that cover will likely be a cult classic in the years to come because of how strong the project is.
That’s only you then. Angels knew what Charli was cooking all along.
I love the album cover lol. It's simple but very purposeful
oh I saw the cover… and was like she’s bout to eat. Bc if u put out a cover like that and DONT deliver, it’s over, the work has to back it up
i genuinely don't understand how people thought that cover was bad because to me it was instantly and effortlessly iconic. it's part of the brat experience.
I can't decide my mind if the song Girl, So confusing is about Lorde, or is it about MARINA. She mentions in the song that they both have similar hair (MARINA and Charli), also I think it's about MARINA, because of the lyrics "You're all about writing poems, but I'm about throwing parties". MARINA released a poetry book "Eat The World" couple months back and Charli just throwing parties. And the other lyrics about wanting MARINA to watch Charli XCX "falling over and failing" regarding the "That froot looks familiar!" moment. But know that I heard there's some references to Lorde's lyrics, I don't know which one it is.
honestly i see it being about both of them.
I thought it was about MARINA until she mentions throwing ur hands up and lorde literally said she doesn’t like being told to put her hands up in team
I really love the awareness she has in this album. I’m newer to her music and never really dwelled into her until recently but wow this album is so good. Her song sympathy is a knife is soooo good. She’s one of the very few woman who I have heard discuss disliking woman so openly especially in a time where you are basically forced to support every woman, if not, you’re not considered a “girls girl”. Most female artists who talk about this topic always discuss it in a positive manner or it is very cookie cutter but Charli outright is saying “I don’t like you and I don’t want to share my space with someone like you.” I mean she has previously said she didn’t like Lorde because she envied her and kept her distance due to that which I have heard sympathy is a knife is about her but who knows lol. She is a strong contender for AOTY.
I’m so excited that charli is getting her flowers I honestly thought she would with how I’m feeling now but brat could be a great into for the rest of her discography. I remember seeing her open for someone at one of my very first concerts and I fell so in love with her
‘Half of y’all aren’t gonna read the book anyway and I think the covers kinda cute’ - I LOVE this
Never looked Charli’s way before until last weekend I was high off a shroom and came across a clip of the Vroom Vroom video and low key (high key) was BLOWN AWAY. Now I’m a fan
Naomi posted, so let me watch while I’m at work lmao
So glad you talked about this album! It's been on repeat for me ever since it came out. I have to say that I was. nervous when Von dutch was released because I didn't like it very much, but ever since then the entire album and era have grown on me massively. I love how Charli embraces the party girl persona and breaks it down at the same. It's too early to say for sure, but I think it might just be her best project yet (Talk talk is def one of her best songs ever too)
Also, I really liked your breakdown of the individual songs, especially So I.
I really appreciated how the production of spring breakers was taxi adjacent. After her teasing us by playing it on the crash tour when the house lights came on I feel like we needed this. It def was a project dedicated to Sophie production wise and it seemed like she had more control over this than Crash.
As a Brat obsessor, I've watched pretty much every reaction and review video on this platform and this one is my FAVORITE - I now have insights and perspectives to mull on I hadn't considered before. ❤
Have you watched Professor Skye's analysis? It's excellent!
My top 5? No order:
Everything is Romantic
Club Classics
Guess
Spring Breakers
365
taste fr
same, but sympathy is a knife over spring breakers (but tbh both are so good and i love the whole album)
thanks for the epilepsy warning ❤️
OMG never been this early to one of your vids... some misses on the album for me but to see her get a little more personal was very cool and refreshing. But also releasing the extended cut. So shortly after.. she really did THAT. Also can't believe she switched all her album covers 😢
I agree! When she said it was going to be a club album, I didn’t expect there to be any ballads. I do love “So I”, even though I think it would’ve been a better fit on Crash.
@@connormacgregor1531I disagree. I think the slower songs outweigh the club songs. Plus, “So I” is such a powerful tribute to SOPHIE’s death
I don’t think they’re going to be switched forever, she’s probably just gonna do it for a short period of time since this era is just sky rocketing and it’s a popular marketing tactic that other artists have also used.
brat for me is: Although you long for the past and worry about the future - what’s most important is living in the now so that you don’t miss out on the love, romance and beauty in life (not just between two people but in general) ! 💚
Naomi you always have a beautiful style!
I like this type of music, the sound at least. It's fun and good for the summer, honestly, and the sound can really be addictive. But sometimes it can also be a little bit too much for me, especially after i listen to these sounds many times. I also miss artists like Kesha and her debut era sound.
okay yes the party girl vibes remind me of Kesha in spirit- I love how they create these atmospheres around parties, so otherworldly but obviously so realistic at the same time
Hearing So I made me stop so quick. I remember hearing about her passing and how much my heart broke. I couldn’t even IMAGINE Charli during that moment and even now I always wish her the best bc she’s a star. Even now you hear how much Sophie inspires her even now that she’s gone. And I know she’ll be proud of the artist she’s become.
YASSSS Ive been waiting for this video!
You are STUNNING. also, I loved the album. The bonus tracks slap too
I'd love to see Charli nominated for the Mercury Prize, Brit Awards, and maybe even the Grammys next year.
I think she’ll get acknowledged at the Brits, I’m curious to see how the Grammys treat her tho bc they play around
@@naomi.cannibal "Spring Breakers" probably didn't help since it's about her blowing up the Grammys lol
The Lana Del Rey line on the Mean Girls track is iconic. 💚
Listening on ur AirPods 😌😌😌
First Album I've heard in a long time that I really just Love. Honestly never listened to Charlie XCX before. Sympathy is a Knife floored me. So honest, fun, beautiful, and a huge, encompassing sound. Epic as anything on the Richard D James album (which is my all-time favorite album). It's always special when an artist, on top of their game, honestly reveals themselves while not taking everything too seriously. All on top of banger after banger. ❤❤❤❤❤ It's officially Year of The Brat
Lovely review! I always stan a cannibal🫡
Such an incredible album!
The fact it became the most critically acclaimed album of the year.
The most forward thinking album of the year. But like someone said, the recording academy will pay this dust as well as hit me hard and soft..
I am putting it out there. Charli XCX is the new Queen of Pop! Madonna will always be the first, then Britney B**ch and Monster Gaga, now it’s Charli XCX with Brat! I’m dying on this hill.
@@sebastiangeorge6394 charli xcx has already been the queen of pop for a few years now
@@syntheticsilkwood2206 agreed, I felt it on HIFN but Brat just solidified it!
just listened to the album this morning. it really is as good as the hype! thank you for this analysis, def going to listen with a new perspective now 😊
I love this album so much, it’s such a gorgeous blend of her previous work, sonically and lyrically!!
Love the album and love the review! I really like the way you explained Apple because I didn’t know how to explain it even though I know what it’s about and I relate to it. I don’t know if that really makes sense but I hope it does.
it baffles me how she makes party bops that look superficial, but it always feels like there's something way deeper about them. idk how she does it honestly
This is a really well made video!
Such a phenomenal album. Been obsessively listening to it since Friday like a mad man.
girl you need to talk about chappell roan
I read apples as family commentary too, on generational trauma!!!! So excited to see someone else saw that side of it too 💜 thanks for the fantastic analysis!!!
10/10 album. Probably will be the best album of the decade.
Charli XCX is the new Queen of Pop…sorry Taylor and Billie and Chappell, don’t get me wrong their pop princesses but THIS is how you become a Pop Queen. Madonna, Britney, Gaga, and now Charli XCX.

I wanna make a video essay on brat but I need more time to make it 😢

love this dive
This album gets better and better w each listen 💓
I'm so happy for her. The album slaps
overall, i enjoy brat, but there are some songs i have trouble with. “Sympathy is a knife” is also my favorite song and i see it as a career highlight for Charli and a marker of her growth in her sound and writing. my favs are Sympathy is a knife, Everything is romantic, B2B, Club classics, and Talk talk, and my fav from the deluxe is Hello goodbye. if 360 didn’t open brat up, Hello goodbye could’ve done it; but it definitely would’ve set the album up to go a different direction. it reminds me of Pop 2 in a way, mainly Backseat and Out of my Head
every new video reminds me why i love your content sm ❤
A gain Anne agayn
Charli is indie pop at its best ❤❤❤ i hope she never changes
It's very interesting in 1999 music, because in the boiler room section, plays a awesome remix of 1999 by EASYFUN, I guess was intentional to link that boiler room peak that would bring that feeling in Rewind
Love you videos Naomi ! Can you do TTPD ? ❤️
ewwwww
Sympathy is a knife 🔪
will you make a video on please please please by sabrina?
she gagged it! this is a pop culture MOMENT
I think Apple is very literal; it's about her parents. She doesn't feel understood by them, so she quickly escapes back to the airport. I love it personally
Been a fan since Franceskaar
day 1
CHARLI NEEDS HER 🌹🌹🌹🌹
I love apple!! It's about her parents and her desire/complicated feelings around having kids and shitty traits being passed from your parents to you to your kids. And its succchhhh a banger. It's a fun unique song that sticks out from the other tracks on the album.
Opinion on the new remix of ‘Girl, so confusing’ with Lorde?
It’s everything both 16 year old me and 26 year old me wanted and more! Literally still as a rock and listened to it on loop a few times yesterday just taking in it actually exists 😭
I’m still in awe of it, Charli has been giving us dream collaborations for awhile and this era having Robyn and Lorde is wild to me
It’s so refreshing to hear Lorde with a more uptempo sound, I hope she plays with it more in the future
This is aoty
y'all should listen to PLAYGIRL by Lolo Zouaï it's a little bit the same body of work than Charli who bring back the party girl like 'Crazy Sexy Dream Girl' or the title track 'PLAYGIRL'
i love brat period
I’m not a charli fan but I’ve noticed that Charli touches a lot of people lyrically and I wanna give her a try, I’m not sure which album I should start with ?😅
Honestly from the beginning! It’s cool to see her sound change. Some of my fave early songs from like the first 2 albums are nuclear seasons, you, what I like (true romance), famous, gold coins, famous, need ur luv (sucker). Honestly, there’s faves on all her albums but her sounds kinda “shifts” around vroom vroom/ no1 angel
Her vulnerability on this album is fucking inspiring and quite comforting
Some people think that girl, so confusing is actually referencing Marina and the diamonds
wow your top 5 songs are mine too. :O interesting
AOTY
Can someone explain the album cover? Like I get it… but wanna hear other perspectives. Lol 🥲
ok so previously all of her album covers were her being borderline naked as her label asked... she said she hates the fact that even with music covers womens bodies are used to capitalise off of, also her own fans were not happy with her last album and they said wanted the "cuntyy experimental charli" back so this is also a way of her trolling her fans. also since this album is a throw baack to 2000s rave and party scene, this color and bold blurry text in the centre fits it the best
I thought “girl so confusing” was about Marina, not lorde! I can also very much see it being about lorde though, and it would make sense
her talking about sophie and lorde in that vulnerable way really surprised me
I don’t necessarily like nor understand her act but it’s cool to see women express themselves outside of what is considered normal and acceptable. Unfortunately the US Media keeps breeding insufferable popstars and this seems to be a reasonable reaction to it in her world.
Can epileptic people listen to her music? (Serious question)
Your amazing as always but this video flashes gave me a headache.
B2B is such a bop, period.
So I is more vulnerable, Everything is romantic i think is more of a party girl
hi

SYMPATHY IS A KNIFE IS ABOUT FKA TWIGS NOT TAYLOR SWIFT BTW.
I thought it was about Lorde 💀
@@Mtv20O1 thats girl, so confusing
its about fks twigs and rina both
@@firstofawll It makes sense but not entirely, because FKA has nothing on Charli. Plus there’s proof that Charli and Taylor shared backstage on multiple occasions
@@nohablogringoum as a huge fan of both charli AND twigs
Fka twigs is much more of a realised artist than charli she has been helping produce her music, being true to herself and making art that defies all odds since day one
She has also gotten way more hate than her and she's gorgeous
So even if it might be about her don't you dare disrespect twiggy like that
Charlie is the new Pop Queen. Full stop. She is bringing the idea of modern fame into the pop scene and this is for the GAYS and the GIRLS. Sorry Taylor’s, Billie and Chappell but THIS is how you become a Queen of Pop-she’s no Pop princess like them. She is bold. We had Madonna, Britney, Gaga and now Charli XCX!! It’s not about the charts it ABOUT the culture and if it can be played at the gay clubs where we get our LIVES. Thank you Charli XCX for bringing a true Pop revolution for the GG’s!!!!!!!!! I am getting LIFE!!!!!!
Tbh I’m so confused at all the extremely positive reviews of this album…it was my personal least favorite project of hers 20 I’ve listened to this year and I just don’t get why everyone loves it.
Probably because it’s hyperpop and not mainstream digestible for the average person
Every women's success there's a man behind it
first 💚💚 mean girls is a great track
loved the album sm! it’s such a complex body of work. it provides charli’s party girl persona we all know and love, but there’s also a thick emotional layer to the lyrical content, that’s both very personal, yet relatable to the listener (?)😭🤍 idk how she does that! it’s a huge talent to juggle those themes (put all those complicated emotions into a party album)… love charli sm 🤍 my no.1 pop star
Charli really set the tone with her design🟩 Also on “Girl, so confusing” possibly being about Lorde, some people have argued that it could be about Marina
