- Welcome back to Staff Picks. This week, the gang is choosing for the Horror Shelf. And some of these choices are frankly scary.
This is Staff Picks, a brand new show from Cracked. Join Patrick Willems, Danielle Radford, and friends as they curate the greatest video store movie selection the world has ever seen. Every week they'll each pick a movie from one of the big four genres. Then between the four of them, they have to unanimously decide which movie earns a spot on shelves of their dream store. Thank you for shopping at Staff Picks.

#beetlejuice #donniedarko #Horror - Komedie
Fun Fact: In Return of the Living Dead, on the back of Freddy's jacket, in the theatrical version, the words "F*ck You" are displayed. After realizing that the shot could not be used in case it was ever shown on TV, a second jacket was made that says "Television Version" and can be seen in the TV version of the movie.
Return of the Living Dead is not just a zombie/horror/comedy (all of which work,) but it's the most 80s thing I've ever seen.
You guys inspired me to start throwing unpopular film opinion hand grenades into popular subreddits.🎉
I think that one thing this group might be missing is that, in a video rental store setting, each clerk is known for a type/genre of movie that they specialize in. If each of you comes to the table with a pick in each genre, it kind of betrays the aesthetic nature of the video store. You goto X for Action, Y for Drama, and you just kind of hope one of them is in that day. Sure, you might have a jack of all trades type, but it was the people who specialized in a genre that really shine. This comes from a person who has worked both sides of the counter.
But the premise of the videos is the debate about why X should be included in Y category. Now if the categories were more esoteric like "best movie to watch when sick/sad/high then yes the specialization would be interesting because they'd all be discussing why that particular genre works for that event/feeling.
@@agiddysea I see what you are saying and I don't disagree, but I think its possible to still have the same conversation if they all simply fought for a specific genre they are responsible for and try to convince the others the merit of the film, kind of like what they are already doing. I wouldn't call what they are doing wrong, just that it doesn't lend itself to how going to or working in a video store actually feels (...felt). Maybe there is a format that better suites the vibe they are going for. I still like the show, they are doing a good job.
My issue with this episode is that none of these guys are into horror (which they all admit), so as someone who is, I was just frustrated. I got no real insights into the movies, nothing particularly grabbed me. And of course, they had no criteria going into it for what works as horror.
You have to put more than one movie on each shelf.
Season two is not negotiable.
I'll give it to "Evil Dead 2" but I can't even count how many times I've watched "Return of the Living Dead". It's ability to give the nod to, George Ramero while being very much it's own zombie movie is a rare accomplishment for sure.
Zombies in general fall into 2 categories
The ones where zombies are actually a threat because you have limited weapons
And the other where you get plenty of weapons and the zombies are just targets. This is more of a survivor type game rather than horror
Anwser:They don't
I'm pretty sure somewhere i still have my VHS of Evil Dead 2 i got on ebay when i was 13 or 14.
Real time reaction... Yes! Chyna picked Beetlejuice! A film that I would actually watch. Although Danny Darko and Return of the Living Dead seem like films I'd like - and I scare easy.
I miss cracked.
Is it me or things have changed for some reason?
I have no idea what the hell happened, but this was shoved down our throats for some reason. Fuck this shit.
Can't wait for this. Horror is my favorite genre... I love make up fx.
Beetlejuice was hyped up for me, but luckily it's grown on me in a way few things do!
Mom hated zombie movies because she knew in her heart they zombie apocalypse could happen.
This is my new favorite show
Return is one of my top 3 films (bride of Frankenstein and gremlins 2) but having to choose between it and evil dead 2. Two ultimate classics films in the genre I think I’d have to boil it down to enjoyment and what had the most impact in horror and I can’t decide
I love this show
I also have the media/hype cooldown rule for movies and tv shows cause i wanna just be able to engage and enjoy something on my own terms
i love a good zombie film, has to be done well though some are very dodgy.
i would heartily recommend ash vs the evil dead (not a film but a television series).
i would also recommend juan of the dead (a funny cuban zombie film).
Oh neat
I didn’t know Daniele Radcliffe was part of cracked
I love her on dropout
I keep expecting to hear 'Jonah, my fellow white guy' lol
7:51 well technically resident evil is a zombie movie cause the person dies and gets reanimated into a zombie but in 28 they don't die and come back as a zombie.
I always felt a good horror movie needs at lest 50% good comedy.
Now I think zombies are passing phase that might pop in and out but you know what's always the scariest horror movie? True Crime. Like look at all the serial killers and tortures out there and you think, yeah that's going to happen in real life cuz it did. Jeffrey Dahmer is a true life horror movie. And it doesn't even have to be human on human horror, you want to know the scariest horrifying most disturbing true life that had happened to a human being ? I mean something that turned into a real life horror movie? Here's a story that'll make you lose sleep, look up on what happened to Hisashi Ouchi. No zombies can't compare to what happened to that man
that train story is an massive exaggeration from what I've heard
This time I got here early 🎉 but funnily this is my least favorite genre. Interested to see which one is selected.
Another great episode/discussion. My personal first choice was mentioned at the end and not picked, John Carpenters, The Thing. I am hoping for some more episodes after this.
Since when is Donnie Darko a horror film? Love Return of the Living Dead is one of my favourites
Engagement engagement engagement
Well there be more
We don't carry about this. Bring back After Hours!!!
The scariest thing about the RotLD zombies is that they can think.
This is a really good show!
Yo, when’s the next episode coming out???
Hopefully soon! We adjusted our schedule in solidarity ✊
@@cracked can’t wait! Been absolutely loving the series!
I've never comprehended the idea of letting annoying fans of something make you dislike it, EEAAO fans are annoying as hell, I still like the movie, Radiohead fans can be pretentious, I still like Radiohead, whatever
Also why does "plot explained" special features make something better, like would that make Mulholland Drive for you better? special features that explain the plot?
"read the movie correctly" art is subjective, take a movie in and get out of it what you do, and think about it and come to a conclusion for yourself
I've always wondered where is all the zombie poop, and no Exorcist??
Return of the Living Dead _is_ pretty great.
Cinemasacer, and avgn did this already.
Normals on the left, noses on the right
Donnie Darko's good but horror?
Good job, guys!
What are these people? Where are Swaim and the guy from Colorado?
I thought Cracked went out of business again?
2 x B minuses and 2 incompletes
What about the Paris Hilton sex... Oh you said horror. Jokes aside nepo babies are people with feelings too over inflated value or not. Personally "evil Dead" was one of my favorites but I would have thrown a curveball with "behind the mask legend of Leslie Vernon." And if you did want to pull in a "Johnny Darko" like direction "John dies at the end" is better in my opinion. Comparing horror movies in general is like comparing different kinds of alcohol because there are right ones for different situation and different brands of each kind. Try "everything everywhere all at once" you don't think it's a horror movie until you realize it's considered so amazing in our universe because you don't live in the good universe where every other movie makes it meh, average. BOO!!! does it count if I scare Eldritch horrors but I'm wearing a sheet like an idiot just for fun anyway?
Now on to part 1B... There are 12,468 subsections and they will all be on the test🎉😘🤬🔥🛎️
Ive heard and learned tons of stuff from watching DVD commentarys
By the way NONE of what you guys picked are horror film's 😂🤣😆
the whole mummy/zombie "monster" idea is hands down the lamest and most unscary thing ever created and i feel embarrassed on behalf of the "people" who rave about how much they love it
Surprised, that "Friday the 13th", "Halloween", "Nightmare on Elm St", "Saw" or like even "Shining", "Cujo" were not even mentioned. Really?! Not even in the commentaries? I mean the topic is "Horror". Sorry, not watching anymore of this series.
Unsubbed altogether.
