  • Robert Yellin has a deep knowledge of pottery & ceramics and the artisans who create them in Japan past and present. Robert is one of the living legends for Japanese pottery and ceramics knowledge and is such a generous soul who really cares about the work, the artists, and his customers. I would highly recommend a visit to his gallery if you are in Kyoto, or contact Robert to learn about his shipping options around the world if you can't make it to Japan.

It was wonderful learning about pottery in Japan with Robert Yellin - he has such a deep love and understanding for this traditional art and its importance for sustainability in Japan- hope I'll be able to visit his beautiful collection of work in his studio someday.

@@kenchawkin4379 thanks Ken- I know nothing about pottery except what I like the look of an feel of, nice to hear from an expert that those are key factors of valuing pottery :)

This was a great watch. I've been reading Robert Yellins articles for years on e-Yakimono but somehow never thought that I'd find him on youtube. Thanks for the great interview!

A very late comment, but any discussion of the "sustainability" of ceramics should also talk about how (historically) vast tracts of forest in China and Japan were cut down to fire the kilns. This is not as big a problem these days (especially since many potters in Japan use electricity which can be renewable), but in the days of the vast export industry (particularly around Jingdezhen in China and Arita-ware potteries in Japan) it was a massive blow to the local ecosystems.

taking care of our forests is so important in any trade that relies on wood as a key resource for sure

The talk is much appreciated, but for a channel which has "Seeking Sustainability" in it's name the irony of consumer ads roughly every 3-4 minutes for an hour long program is hard to ignore. Commercial television isn't even that relentless.

Thanks for your comments, glad you appreciated the talk. Of course having an income is a key part of the balance of sustanability but ads shouldn't happen more than at the beginning and end. Unfortunately no CZcams users have the option to opt out of ads completely or choose the type of ads, so appreciate your understanding with that. I can start offering ad free videos to sponsors here on CZcams, on patreon, Buy-me-a-coffee or Kofi if that's something you're interested in, please let me know.

@@seeksustainablejapan I realize you have very little to say about what CZcams decides to do with ads, and that in the real world it is necessary to generate funds to share your message and the beauty of Japanese culture so don't take my words too seriously. We could use more channels like yours.
