Breaking the third wall refers to when a character addresses the medium in which they are situated. This is one level removed from breaking the fourth wall, in which characters acknowledge and/or speak to the audience. Breaking the third wall doesn't acknowledge the audience but it can become an implicit inside joke between them.

Calvin is so open minded and insightful. He nailed in when he said most LGBTQ films lack any real substance. Not only that most of them end in heartbreak or tragedy. He is a keeper!

No matter if you liked or not it’s a big deal to have it made and put out in theaters… would have never happened 15 years ago. Keep up the great content!

The movie is going to affect us differently based on our own life experiences. It's cliche, the handsome prince falls for the caustic brainiac.., but that's part of the appeal--poking fun at cliche, poking fun at dating apps, poking fun at the extremists while maybe making me think about why they are extreme. The tone is set when we see Kristin Chenowith speaking her piece in that dress and hat. I'm not sure how my straight friends (in their 50s and 60s) will respond. I take a lot for granted that for them will be a cold bucket of water in the face. And at the end of the day, I'm still a sucker for the handsome prince. Luke more than delivered.

I love that you guys went to see this together. My husband and I loved it and I would give it an eight. I thought it was funny and also hit a a lot of important current topics for gay men and couples who live in a heteronormative world. It’s also great and sad at the same time that this is the first gay Rom Com ever to be released by a major studio. If we want to see more gay centered films on the big screen, even if you didn’t think it was great, it is so important we show the big movie companies that there is an audience for gay centered films and we want to see more. So please support this movie, go see it an buy it when it comes out on demand and dvd. All gay allies need to support on this!

I saw it Saturday, me and one other person was in the theater. It was OK but Un Coupled on Netflix was, in my opinion much funnyer.
I feel like he was trying to talk it nice and then he realized you were talking shit so he felt more comfortable to 😂 and it’s like the point is your a straight dude watching this and then his first thing is “the one dude was soooo hot”

Thank you for your thoughts here guys. I do want to see this movie, though not as much as I did want to. I'll no doubt will wait until it's on one of the movie apps, Amazon Prime, Netflix, or tubi. Or CZcams, but I won't pay extra to see it, I mean I'm not going to "rent" it. You guys should do more movie reviews like this, you're both way better than paid movie critics. ✌️
The only thing I hated to hear you say was that they needed someone “hotter” to play the main character. I get that you don’t like Billy, but saying that two people aren’t realistic based on their looks isn’t very nice. Also look into how hard he fought around casting almost exclusively LGBTQ+ people and it gave me a bigger appreciation for the movie.

there is also breaking the 3rd wall which i think is what this maybe was. fourth wall is when they talk to us, 3rd wall is when they mention something about the setting and then talk about it

i like Calvin. i just saw the movie, and i agree with both of you!! everything you said.
Interesting to get the Gen Z take, because I've read tons of peeps (straight and gay) who apparently expected the movie to be absolutely perfect and for everyone to just be flocking to see it!
I saw it a week ago with my husband and the theater was about 1/3 full, seemingly mostly gay with a few "allies." People in the theater laughed a lot and we definitely felt it was funny, but not quite as EXTREMELY funny as Billy and others were trying to make it out to be. My favorite thing about the movie is that it was very self-deprecating about anything and everything gay / hookup "culture," etc. I think to like this movie requires a few things:
1) already like or at least be indifferent to Billy (he is a VERY polarizing figure and seems to not be liked much by the gays overall)
2) be around the age of the characters
3) be gay or lesbian, especially cis/white
I WANT to see it again, to support the movies "mission" (but it seems that this might be a one-off, a gay rom-com) and because I did find it funny/enjoyable overall.
Again, the ones who I think would like it the most would be gay males in their 30s. There were a lot of lines / subjects where my husband and I were enjoying because we could relate to it, similar things had happened to us or we knew of friends with these experiences (like the stuff with all the hookups).
The part I didn't like was at the end because it's just very unbelievable that would be happening in the midst of the museum opening/speech.
I wish it would have been better received / more people seeing it but can't say I'm surprised, people don't see movies in the theater as much these days and definitely not comedies and even more so not rom coms, and even even more so not ones with two gay guys for the leads. I guess Billy thought straight women (and maybe their boyfriends/husband's dragged along?) would turn out for it, but straight women only want to see rom coms with straight women, we all know they BASIC like that. Also the studio never should have released it before Halloween!!!? It's so obvious??!! Everyone is seeing SMILE and now Terrifier 2 instead, DUH! I think it would have performed better in April/May/June.
Chris and Calvin should watch Fire Island on Hulu - I haven't seen it yet but I'm guessing you might like it! better?

I saw the movie the opening weekend. I saw one trailer a month before it was released on a porn site. I didn't really pay attention to the trailer, because I thought it was going straight to streaming. When I saw that it was playing in my local theater I was surprised and quickly went to see it. I was vaguely familiar with Billy Eichner. I had seen him in this mildly amusing TV show. I was just supporting it because it was gay. The only part that made me laugh was also when he made the straight voice. The rest of the time I just sat there wishing this was over soon. I felt it was trying too hard to be woke and appeal to all LGBT people. It missed that mark by trying to be everything to us all. We are huge and diverse community and you can't please us all in one movie. Billy should stick to what he knows best. Write about the cis white gay male experience.
