  • Join me and my good friend Steph as we take on day two of the Herriot Way, in the North Yorkshire Dales National Park.
If you haven't seen part 1, please check out my channel and watch that one first. Thank you.
We leave the village of Askrigg. The day's first leg is through rolling green pastures with small sections of woodland. We take a short detour to visit an amazing waterfall called Mill Gill. If you are on this trail, it is a must-see! From here, we continue through over the rolling fields passing quaint hamlets until we reach the town of Hawes, where we stop for lunch. It was about 8 miles to Hawes from Askrigg. It was a busy and vibrant town with plenty to see and do and many places to buy food.
Leaving Hawes, we began our slow ascent up towards the summit of Yorkshire's third-highest mountain, Great Shunner Fell. It rained, it was incredibly windy, and visibility was sometimes very poor. We trudged through the mud whilst skipping over the peat bogs, which there were plenty of due to the recent rainfall in the region. The weather forecast had got it wrong! We reached the summit around 5pm. Thankfully, the summit has a large winder breaker with built-in seating. We rested here for a while.
We descended towards Twaithe village. The descent felt like it was never-ending, a slow and steady plod, being careful not to get swallowed up in the bogginess of it all! It did stop raining, and the cloud lifted, presenting amazing and beautiful views of the moorlands. We made it to the road and into Thwaite village, which appeared nice, but everything was closed when we arrived. Approx ten minutes from Thwaite, we arrived at Usha Gap Campsite. A well-established campsite with great facilities. I would stay here again, £10 a night. I did not have a reservation, just turned up and pitched up. We paid in the morning at reception, which was fine. I get the impression they are used to hikers coming in at all times of the day. The staff were very friendly. Usha Gap campsite is not physically on the route but is about a ten-minute walk from Thwaite. Hikers doing the Pennine Way or the Coast to Coast trail also use this campsite. It's popular and family-friendly. I slept solidly that night. I didn't get up once, which is very unusual for me. This was the longest day on the trail, probably the toughest too! Probably should have followed the guidebook recommendations!

Love Hawes, not been for a couple of years, so a good reminder to go again and remember the market day. Oh never been to Mill Gill waterfall before but looks a great little diversion to me, what an amazing sight! Talking about amazing sights the Dales looked amazing as well and you get some great weather to appreciate them (falling rocks apart). Ohhh I had to mention the weather :o( but it did lend to some very moody skies and scenery and the Muker wildflower meadows to Keld is one of Mrs Metalmans favourite walks every year. Great effort on doing 20 miles mind👋👋👋cheers Alan

Hi Sue, this was toughest day on the trail. 16 miles is my comfort zone but known I could squeeze a few more miles out somehow. The sheep provided good entertainment near the end which boosted our moods when we were absolutely cream cracked! Thank you for watching 😀

  • @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling

Those waterfalls were magnificent, Rachel. Another epic day with epic views. 20 miles!!! And you still had a smile on your face. I did the Edale Skyline Challenge over 21 miles, and I was fit for nothing when I got to the end. Congratulations on a massive hike. Those squeeze gates were a bit squeezy. I'm loving the adventures and thanks for sharing.

Hi Chris, thanks for stopping by. I have your Edale vlog on my ‘watch later’ list. Looking forward to it. I wouldn’t mind have a pop at that one too. Might even consider a cheeky wild camp 🏕️ up on Kinder.
Have a great week and all the best 😀

Aren't you just happy when the weather forecast is not correct 😅 I would be really happy right now, honestly, so I could go and have a bike ride instead of watching the rain 😊

6:40 start? What a great view to start the day! Those pinch gates are mental, not for anyone with a backpack thats for sure. Great bit of TLC, stunning waterfall! Nice brew with a view. Im a bit of a diva i need two green teas and one black coffee before i start my day, you would be at your second stop when i was ready to set off and start my day! Great news about the availability of toilets, i always film those! Two hours ahead of time for the rain, ggrrr. Great Shunner Fell is really impressive. The attack of the herd, what a great finish to the day! That was some miles, particularly with all that ascent too! 👍

Good morning; thanks for tuning in for part two. I'm not sure what it is, but I always wake up stupidly early when I go camping. Maybe it's the excitement of a day of hiking ahead of me. The forecast was way off all week, but we adapted. We had to. Despite being a very tiring day, we really enjoyed it.

A great part two Rachel. I've forgotten my toothbrush on trips before now too, so I know how it feels! 😅 Hawes is a lovely place, stayed there for a week in 2014 - you captured a shot of the B&B I was in actually, Herriots Guest House next to Herriots Cafe 😀 Good going on the mileage you did this day including your ascent of Great Shunner Fell 🙂👍

Wow, well done Rachel and Steph. Twenty miles with fairly sizeable rucksacks, I think you earned the right not to do any more filming that evening. Bet you both slept like logs, hopefully logs with clean teeth!!🤣😂 I have a kit-list spreadsheet, four pages of A4, a bit of an epic to read through, but I haven’t forgotten anything recently.
    Cheers
