She has already decided on buying the Tesla. She just wants one more person to agree with her.
If I was talking to her I would be honest about it. Electric cars not better for the environment but they most certain are the future.
There are plenty of really nice gasoline vehicles that she could own for half the price.

The amount of money people are willing to spend to impress people they don't know or don't even like will never cease to amaze me.
Nothint wrong with spending money to impress people when you have worked hard and can afford to do it. Thatâs the end goal for everyone, isnât it? Could be in the form of a car, clothes, dinners, vacations, etc.

@@joshhawkins2596 I can agree with nothing wrong with spending money when you've worked hard for it and can afford it. This lady and her family have certainly done that. She seems squeamish about it and for reasons that indicate she's buying the car more for status than for functionally. Which is really her business more than anyone's. Her paying of the house early would be so much better.
I agree with that, it would be a far better use of the money. I think having a fully paid for appreciating asset is much better than a fully paid for depreciating asset.
@@kingbran923 appreciating asset or depreciating asset,

Unlike my 1972 Chevy Truck, the Tesla won't be here in 50 years.
We have three kids and want a 3rd row vehicle. I looked into those Tesla's and then threw up.
But we also looked into like, Ford Explorers, Subaru Ascents, Honda Pilots, etc. Then I started looking at mini vans and saw a review from savagegeese for the honda odyssey and he said something like, "I know minivans aren't cool, but all of the crossover SUVs all look alike and everyone has one so they're not cool either. So if you have people you need to move, get the minivan because it's the best vehicle to move people."
So now we're pretty locked into getting a minivan. Plus the doors slide open automatic and makes it easier in the garage.
Yes, a Toyota sienna looks cooler than a Tesla.

Yep - he also says not to buy a new car unless you're a millionaire. This is not a new car but the exorbitant price is equivalent.
People who buy Teslas don't always want them for status! Her husband already has one. She knows firsthand how practical and awesome they are. AND this car appreciates based on the high demand. Clearly these guys don't need to advise on Teslas. Also, my son and I both own one. Paid cash. No other debt. And I was a cool mom in my old Dodge Ram 2500 diesel monster. :)
She clearly wants it for status after she contradicted herself saying she needed a bigger vehicle for her kids and then saying NO to a Minivan or SUV because she couldn't 'see herself' driving that
They're 100% a status symbol. Nothing you can say can convince me otherwise. They're far cheaper vehicles that are a lot cheaper but if you feel great splooging $100k on a depreciating asset, then go right ahead. YOLO and all that.
"that just sounds terrible for me" right after the suggestion of getting a Toyota minivan reveals the issue. This person puts how she appears to others over helping her family, plus I sense some competition with the husband since he too has a Tesla.
$90k on a used, smallish SUV with looming battery replacement in the foreseeable horizon... or $9k for a used Dodge Caravan that comfortably fits all, is cheap to insure and maintain, is as safe as any other people mover and isn't going to depreciate more than a few hundred dollars a year.

As Dave's analogy goes, if the caller could go withdraw $90k cash from the bank, put it on the dining room table and set it aflame and that doesn't really affect their life, then they should go have at it, get the Tesla and get that silly little itch out of their system (at which point the novelty of a Tesla will soon wear out and they will go back to buying nicely equipped Honda SUVs again).
