Mike Pingitore's banjo solo is the highlight of that entire film to me. Well, that and Willie Hall playing the bicycle pump! Great film from an under-appreciated group.

A classic, historic moment in cinema, with -- of course -- the Venuti and Lang segment being the highlight. Too bad poor Bix was no longer on the band to participate. ...

It’s probably the clearest we ever see Eddie Lang play guitar... at least in the remastered version.

The violins were playing Kreisler! At around 1:25, they were playing his tune "Caprice Viennois."

I'd have loved to have seen the old band with Bix on film...

Here is the only known footage of Bix playing with the Whiteman orchestra, in 1928. I think it is also the only known sound footage of Bix, although he doesn't solo, he only plays some 2nd or 3rd trumpet parts as part of the ensemble. The person who sychronized and recut/edited the film clip also zoomed in on Bix when he is visible. In the original clip I don't think there is any such close-up: czcams.com/video/RmD7jeIEkfg/video.html

Tram was in the film. A year earlier the band was in LA to start filming, but there was a script problem and the band headed back east. Bix was with the band then. The arrangements written for Bix never made it on film.
