Rhapsody In Blue - King of Jazz (1930) - Paul Whiteman - George Gershwin

  • Here's an abridged version of the George Gershwin masterpiece composed for Paul Whiteman in 1924, from this 1930 2-strip Technicolor revue film. The segment opens with a completely unrelated "Voodoo Dance", followed by the opening clarinet solo danced by Jacques Cartier, and then Roy Bargy playing the piano solo. Danced by Russell Markert Girls and Sisters G.
    "King of Jazz" was the first motion picture to use a pre-recorded soundtrack made independently of the actual filming. Whiteman insisted that the entire soundtrack be pre-recorded in order to obtain the best sound, avoiding the poor recording conditions and extraneous noises found in a movie studio. Universal opposed the idea, but Whiteman insisted and prevailed over the reluctant studio executives. After the sound was recorded, the scene was filmed. Later, the film was synchronized to the soundtrack. This allowed the movie to be directed in the same manner as a silent film, with resulting sounds not affecting the completed film.
    King of Jazz was the 19th talking picture filmed entirely in two-color Technicolor rather than simply including color sequences. At the time, the process employed red and green dyes, each with a dash of other colors mixed in, but no blue dye. King of Jazz was to showcase a spectacular presentation of "Rhapsody in Blue," so this presented a problem. Fortunately, the green dye Technicolor used can actually appear peacock blue (cyan) under some conditions, but acceptable results in this case would require very careful handling. Art director Herman Rosse and production director John Murray Anderson came up with ingenious solutions. Tests were made of various fabrics and pigments, and by using an all gray-and-silver background the bluish aspect of the dye was set off to best advantage. Filters were also used to inject pale blues into the scene being filmed.
    The goal was to produce a finished film with pastel shades rather than bright colors. Nevertheless, as it appears in an original two-color Technicolor print, the sequence might best be described as a "Rhapsody in Turquoise". Later prints made from the original two-component negative, which had survived, make the blues look truer and more saturated than they appeared to audiences in 1930.

      Sound was already pretty big in film by this time, at least in the US. The movie was actually a big flop because a lot of viewers at the time considered its use of sound to be tired and cliche compared to what other movies were doing.

      @@brianlandes1 There were many movie musicals made in 1929 and 1930. Broadway Melody (1929) was very successful, and many more movie musicals were made because of it. People got sick of them in 1930, so they stopped making them after that. A movie musical, called "The March of Time", was never finished because of this. Movie musicals came back in 1932, and then came the famous Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies, along with the Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler movies. The Wizard of Oz was made nine years after this movie made, and that movie is still very famous today. Movie musicals continued in the 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, along with Disney's animated movie musicals. As music became worse, movie musicals became worse too.

    You can hear the frenetic tempo of these early recordings. The irreverence and playfulness. Modern performances are more formal, though some add improvisations, beats, in the piano movements. But the style of these original recordings are just breathtaking. What a gift to world this music is.

    G. 作曲的對象與可能的社會背景:作曲家喬治•格什溫 男美國民族作曲家。格什溫1899年9月26日生於紐約布魯克林。出生於紐約布魯克林的一個俄國猶太移民家庭,原名雅各布•格肖維茨)。14歲時曾師從漢比策彈奏鋼琴,表現出極高的天份。1914年高中輟學,進入紐約出版商雷米克(Remick)的公司,擔任鋼琴手。兩年後辭職,開始創作。1916-1920年間主要從事歌曲創作,這些早期的歌曲以通俗易唱和富於旋律性而流傳甚廣,其中【斯瓦尼】(Swanee)使他一舉成名是美國第一位民族作曲家。在他短暫的一生中,隻留下為數不多的管弦樂作品,但他卻創立了美國所獨具的音樂風格,成為美國民族音樂的奠基人。他父母為俄國猶太移民,約1893年時移居美國。格什溫1899年9月26日生於紐約布魯克林。在通俗的流行音樂領域中,曾經有幾位作曲家的嚴肅性作品已被證明了具有永久的重大價值。格什溫的音樂背景較為低下,他未經過正統的音樂教育,但卻有較高的天賦.最為著名的有科爾•波特、傑羅姆•克恩、歐文•伯林以及理查德•羅傑斯,而其領軍人物就是格什溫,他們的作品標誌著美國流行歌曲的高峰位置。

    Thank you for posting this! I know it’s a longshot, but is there any chance to get the names of the musicians in this film? My maternal grandfather played clarinet and sax in Paul Whitemans orchestra. We’re pretty sure that’s him front row second from stage left/ camera right, but the image is not very sharp so it’s kind of difficult to tell. His name was Ted Greenberg. He also played Radio City Music Hall & gave Benny Goodman saxophone lessons in his office above Radio City!

    He refers to the most primitive and modern aspects, for a people still in the stone age, why is primitive considered wrong. There are still a few remaining African tribes with a primitive culture, however in many ways that primitive culture is better than our modern one, they care for one another till death, if anyone commits a serious crime they are thrown out of the village, so not derogatory. PW also attributes Jazz to Africa, I thought it was in USA among black communities. USA then and still now was very racist, far worse that the UK and we have been bad enough.

    • @Satans_Legion_of_Evil
      @Satans_Legion_of_Evil Před rokem

      How is America still racist? Black people get to do whatever they want, while white people have limited freedom. Anti-white racism is much more common than anti-black racism nowadays. If the news say that someone is racists (anti-black), that means they don't like that person because of his or her opinions. You can't criticize any black person without being called a racist, even if you don't talk about race. People who are against illegal immigration are called racists, people who criticize race mixing are called racists, people who don't want previously white fictional characters to be black are called racists, people who criticize black actors and actresses because they can't act are called racists. It's illegal to be an anti-black racist, but it's totally acceptable to be an anti-white racist. Every modern movie has to include black people, as well as other diversity groups, or else it's "racist". This movie does have a black person, but it's a little girl that sits on Paul's lap in another musical number. The US is about to collapse due to divided politics and economic inflation and debt.

      @boinx1234  Před 10 měsíci +1

      The studio had nothing to do with the title of the piece. That was done years earlier.
      Gershwin began composing on January 7, 1924. He tentatively titled the piece "American Rhapsody". The revised title "Rhapsody in Blue" was suggested by Ira Gershwin after his visit to a gallery exhibition of James McNeill Whistler paintings, which had titles such as "Nocturne in Black and Gold" and "Arrangement in Grey and Black".
      It's not a reference to the blues, it's about the color of the feeling produced by the piece.
