      Because they wanted to take out the shielded air support first.
      If the Fremen immediately started shooting the lasguns at the harvester from out in the open, the Harkonnen gunship and ground troops would see it and use their ranged firepower to home in and kill them (a downside to warfare in mostly open desert.)
      The Fremen ambushed the Harkonnens up close and used the massive harvester as solid cover against the gunship.
      Once the gunship was taken out, the lasguns were free to safely fire on the harvester.

    • @Gunnar001
      @Gunnar001 Před měsícem +1

      @@TheFruitcake1983 Like the other guy said, the gunship was shielded. Lasers hitting a shield have a chance of a reaction that leads to a nuclear detonation, either at the point of contact or it could feedback along the beam and detonate within the firing lasgun. It could even happen at both ends. Basically, this could kill everyone. It’s far too dangerous and unpredictable to try.
      As for the missile launcher, it seems like it’s difficult to get past the shield of a ornithopter. You have to time it just right and hope you get the missile through the shield as the thopter’s gun is firing (which means you need it to be shooting you or your fighters to get that opening.)
      Again, attempting this when you’re out in the open desert with little to no cover is probably not the smartest idea. It’s likely the Fremen already tried this in the past and took horrendous casualties.

      As the above says, the first film and the book both make it known that to use a shield in the desert is a death sentence as it drives the worms mad. Also, slow enough projectiles and those with their own propellants can get through a shield. Shields are also very expensive and not practical for everyone to use, Fremen can’t afford many in the first place and don’t use them because of the worms while the Harkonnen are just to cheap to outfit their troops with them even out of the desert.
