Why BEES DIE over winter! SPRING HIVE INSPECTION | full tutorial and Hive transfer!

- Spring Inspection of 2 Horizontal Hives and Moving 1 into a New Hive. The winter was pretty harsh for the bees in Missouri. We had constant temps at or below zero degrees fahrenheit and that is pretty unusual for us. The Horizontal hive was also knocked over by the sheep and still emerged strong as ever. The design on the hive is amazing! What a piece of artwork! ❤
This is so awesome!! Thank you
´But all the selling takes the magic out of real beekeping. Homestead and doctor making it way to commercial. Just a foreign opinion.
@@helgaeiriksdottir4160 Listening to him talk in the video, I think his heart and mind are in the right place. One has to support themselves in the world such as it, not just what they might hope it to be, presumably. Cheers.
Dr Leo has so much knowledge about the bees it's very interesting I'm so glad you shared this. He's so good that he doesn't even have to have a suit on to get into the beehive.
Just converted a locally purchased Langstroth Nuc to my horizontal 19 frame. Dr. Leo makes it look easy! Have full leg cast but I hobbled my way through. Ran out of time and just laid my cutoffs in hive to put on frames tomorrow. Bees are happy and busy. Have watched over and over. Pick up so much every time. This is best bee site!
Well done Haden.
Nice video Doc, it looks like the Layens is a lot bigger than Langstroth. It seems you prefer Layens, is it because it is easier to lift a Layens frame than to lift out a super from Langstroth hives?
I love that Dr. Leo explains things in a very precise and simple way. Excellent tutorials for beginners and lots of easy to follow explanations as he goes.
I'm so stunned every time I watch him with his knowledge and this man truly cares about the bees
WOW! Every time I see y’all together doing the bee thing I feel like I just finished a college level course!!! Great video, stuff & information - THANK YOU❣️ Marcus from Chesapeake VA.
Better than some of the college courses I've taken, if I'm being honest.
Dr. Leo amazes me how he does not use a bee suit ... great!
Most long time beekeepers do not use bee suit if only working on a few hives, but most are not foolish in not wearing face protection, it only takes one bee sting to blind a person if stung in the eye. Bees have an instinct to go for the eyes because their worst foe is the black bear.
I'm hooked on this series & so is the rest of my family! This is just as good as any National Geographic or Discovery programs. Love the full length video's too. Thank you!
Leo's daughter did a BEAUTIFUL job on the painting. What a gift. Now he has 2 boxes with her's & her mother's artwork. 💖
This is fascinating! Love watching him work with the bees. I live in a condo and would never be able to do this but am so thankful for all of you who are keeping honeybees safe!
Just because your in a condo don’t mean you can’t keep bees. You might know someone with land or some city’s have community gardens. Find out if you can get access to the roof. Just some ideas. If there a will there’s a way.
@@michaelb8091 I agree
I cannot believe I watched this entire video, I am not a bee keeper. fascinating.
🤣👍 well thanks for that!
It’s mesmerizing.
@@OFFGRIDwithDOUGSTACY Hey Doug what are you going to do with your OLD hive? I will take it off your hands!!!
Yet. Not a beekeeper yet.

😂
Am I the only one who has to go get a piece of toast with honey on it during these videos? 😂😋 🐝
No, but it was hilarious watching them just munching through a shared piece of honey.
I have my honey on hand
Nope.I'll. Join you.
I like watching because I love honey and I switched from cane sugars to honey and pure maple syrup for my sweetness .
Doug, my dad was a beekeeper when I was a little girl, they scared the hell out of me, I'm not afraid now, I wish I was not so scared when I was young, i missed out on so much... bees are just amazing. 🐝
I love the design his daughter did, so Beautiful....🐝
The artwork that he has given you guys for both hives is just gorgeous!
Truly I bought one just to hang on the wall lol 🤣👍
@@OFFGRIDwithDOUGSTACY It really is that stunning.
@@OFFGRIDwithDOUGSTACY But where do I buy one? O.O
I will NEVER bitch about the cost of local honey again!!! Dr. Leo is a God! Artwork on the new hive is unbelievably fantastic! Thank you Doug for this video...supremo!
It’s ALOT of work sometimes! If more people knew what we go through!
My contribution to getting pollinators is I just bought 20 pounds of buckwheat seed.
I just love how Dr Leo works with the bees naturally! He is a fantastic mentor.
First time getting the first comment ever! Homestead homies from Alaska! In the years past I don't believe I've ever seen him smile so much on video with you Doug...🐝 Even up here in Alaska, bee keeping is very popular! So much knowledge!
👍
( slow clap 👏)

I love how Dr Leo explains things very simply, so that we learn easily. That bee artwork is absolutely beautiful..
It seems like no matter how many Dr. Leo videos I watch, I always learn something new. I keep a pen and notepad handy to take notes. I especially learn a lot from seeing the problems you experience, so I'm glad those are not edited out. Showing the conversion from Langstroth to Layens was particularly useful to me, as I will be converting some nucs in a couple of weeks. Watching this process will ensure that I have an easier time. I have some swarm traps out, and I hope at least one of them works, but I will be purchasing bees this year to make sure I get the experience regardless. Thanks for making these videos available!
These videos are super helpful. I’m in the UK and changing from stackable National hive to Layens hives because of Dr Leo’s practices and the books. Thanks!
Hi Caroline, I'm in the UK too and doing the same. Have built 2 Layens and will transfer my nationals as soon as the weather is warmer. Think we won't have to cut so much off our national frames 👍 Good luck!
Man it's so sad to see them dead like that, it's happened to me before. And I couldn't imagine how much horror the bees must be going through as the food supply gets lower and lower, and it get colder and colder.
Chin up boys, another summer has begun.
I’m so with you! My heart breaks
What a beautiful design for the hive! Such an informative episode. Dr Leo is a fabulous teacher! Thanks for sharing!
You are truly bless with having Dr Leo. That man is a God Sent! So is Doug, *Cracked and Broken Ribs and all* lol
Love the videos with Dr. Leo. I don't care if the videos are long. He gives out so much information! ❤️
I always learn something new from Dr Leo. So fun and relaxing to watching bees.
Dude I'm allergic to bees wasps etc started watching coyote Peterson videos which led me to you all...since then I've grown a fascination and mounds of respect for these beautiful yet terrifying insects thanks for the videos
Love watching Dr Leo work, he’s like a mad scientist!
This is so very interesting! It’s a pleasure watching Dr. Leo do what he loves. Very gifted family💛
I'm so fascinated by what goes into keeping bees and of course the vast knowledge that Dr. Leo has. I had no idea that was so much to learn about bee keeping.
Thank you both very much for providing us this free knowledge.
Doug n Stacy the progressive homesteaders , love it .
I m not a Bee keeper but my neighbor just 2 years in on his hives and the bees show up at my Bird baths and drink water all day long
I finally know why my bees died two winters ago, and as well, I know I did the right thing combining some late swarms together to build up the population. I'll be watching that there's enough room for the queens late in the year. Thanks again for the awesome video. I'm always shocked with how much I learn from Dr Leo and you!
I recently ordered a Long/ Bar Beehive online and am trying to learn as much as possible watching Doug and Dr. Leo.
This world needs more people like y'all and Dr. Leo. Thank you for everything that the three of you and the other people out there like y'all do and share with people for the betterment of life.
Its obvious the whole conversation and interview will be a major undertaking and intelligent. Its heart breaking to see them like that. Thanks.
Off grid in 21 century. Love it.😍
We have been binge watching your bee series and are amazed. We were taking about raising bees and this really helped nail our decision! Absolutely amazing!!! Thanks for the videos, please keep them coming!
This channel was recommended by a friend. I'm hooked.
Been keeping bees for about 10 years and learned a ton of great stuff in the first 15 minutes.
"Take the protein away from the moths!"
Oh. Rather than angle the legs, make an inverted pi with a 6 foot 2x4.
Now that is a beautiful hive box.
I kept watching almost mesmerized and nervous about the number of bees flying around and felt like I needed to run to not get stung! Love the hive pictures. Each hive should be a piece of art! So fascinating to watch.
Love the horizontal hive! So glad we found all these videos before we actually bought bee’s. Can’t wait to get the materials. Thank you thank you so very much for so much information for free! Wow 🤩 totally amazing! God Bless 🙏🏻
I love following my cousin and his bee hives which he takes to the orchards to help the farmers. Love to see how folks deal with their bees!
Wow how beautiful the artwork on the hive is Awesome! Dr. Leo, sure has very talented family and himself with his skills too. Boy it sure is nice Doug and Stacy that you got sure a beautiful gift from Dr. Leo and family. Wow Dr. Leo you are Awesome! watching you with all these bees, and it is Awesome that Doug is learning on how to do this. Dr. Leo you are such a good teacher and may the people who keep bees follow your teaching and you will pass this on to us. Thank you for your teaching Dr. Leo. Look at all those beautiful bee's Wow nice swarm traps, and to help Dr. Leo out please order from him with all his experience. I wish I was nice allergic to bee's would love to have them for our self. Thank you Doug for hosting Dr. Leo.
I am so interested in Farming Bees for honey. Its wonderful. I live in remote Papua New Guinea and we have bees but they have not ever been farmed in our area. I am watching your videos and reading so I will let you know if I start my hives.
Love Dr. Leo. I used his plans to make my long Langstroth, gable hinged roof and screen bottom with trays in January. Transferred from my two deeps body in February. His plans were spot on! No more lifting supers!!
This is so interesting, thank you Doug & Dr. Leo for sharing your experience with us 🥰🥰
Wow....another great video. Who would have ever thought of going horizontal? Dr. Leo is a wealth of knowledge.
Every time I see a video with Doug, Staci, and Dr. Leo, it’s completely packed with information. A total knowledge bomb! I certainly appreciate having it divided into separate videos, as there is a lot of information here.
So much information here. Thanks Dr Leo, Doug and Stacy
Thanks for doing these Doug and Dr. Leo. I'm soaking in all the info and will be having all my children watch for homeschooling! Shalom.
I have a bee allergy. So the closest I can get to bees is through your videos. If I was not allergic I would definitely keep these lovely and amazing creatures. Thank you
very easy to cure the allergy. Healing Hands Wellness, Mt. Vernon, IL
wow! I am so glad you are telling all that is involved with a bee hive. I can't wait to try and get some started myself.
Greetings from Argyll in Scotland. We happened upon your bee videos just recently and love them. Thank you so much. We only started keeping bees last year with the help of a friend in Edinburgh who raised a couple of nukes for us. The weather here is cold and damp, or just damp in the Summer. Which lead us in the direction of Polyhives, national type. Now we are watching with great interest your methods of horizontal hives. It makes sense. One of our hives is stronger than the other and the strong one is now heaving full and we will split as soon as the weather permits. We are though not and have not used mite treatment and hope we can continue that way. Our garden here is not huge, there is a Burn (stream) running through and the Loch is about 30 yards away with winds coming off it much of the time. We have always gardened organic for over 40 yrs, in ever place we have had. And we are keen to make bee keeping the same. Thank you again
You two make a great team. Information is top notch! Thanks 👍
Doug nice video. My wife and I enjoyed watching Dr Leo at work. Amazing 👏
Just fantastic gentleman I always get excited watching the beekeeping
God bless you and yours and God bless the USA
Great video! The bees are fascinating and so is Dr. Leo. Thank you Doug and Stacy, and Dr. Leo!
Such a pleasure to watch Doug and Dr Leo! Great video! So much info and ‘how to’ help. I have been to Dr Leo’s 2 day workshop and highly recommend it. Also recommend watching all his appearances on this channel. So informative, so fascinating. Thank you, Doug and Stacy!
Very nice to see how a transfer is done. Gives me a better understanding of what is needed for when my wife and I make the switch to Slovenian AZ 20 frame hives in the bee house we will be doing. It would have been this spring, but there is never enough time. Keep in mind we are in the latter half of a near complete gut and redo of a house with 32 acres.
Dr. Leo definitely helped us out with practical knowledge of the process. Thank you very much for sharing. Loved the slight bump of the hive towards the end too, reminded me of myself.
So detailed and the information along with the change to hives Is so fascinating. Good stuff!
Thank you Doug and Dr. Leo❣️😊👍
Thank you again Dr. Leo and Doug.
I could watch this guy all day. So informative and knowledgeable. Thanks for another great video.
I hope you start to heal and feel better soon. Just ordered honey and book about bee hives. I'm in Kentucky so I have probably missed my opportunity for 2021 but I plan to study up and learn as much as I can this year so I'm prepared and ready for 2022. So glad I stumbled upon your channel. Great content! Loved Dr. Leo!!! Went to his website.
Your bee videos are must-sees for new beekeepers!
Dr Leo is awesome. Sure appreciate the bee vids.
Hi...... DOUG, thank you for sharing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 🎥👍👍👍
Thank you for the films about bees. I have learned a lot. Thank you and stacy so very much.
I'm learning so much from you both. Thank you for being so thorough. It's giving me the knowledge and courage to attempt being a good Bee Keeper Mama! 🐝🍯 💖🙏🏻
God bless you both!
I can't believe he worked the hive the entire time even cutting the frames without getting stung! Mine got me when I pulled the back observation window of the flow hive off! I quit going anywhere around my hive without throwing on my jacket and veil!
I thank God for bee's they are one amazing gift to man kind .
Thank you Dr Leo & Doug and Stacy for sharing such graceful artwork enjoyed , powerful knowledge God bless you all.
Learned a lot, Dr. Leo is always one of the highlights of your channel. Thank you Doug and Stacy.
Beautiful art Dr. Leo & Daughter ❣️❣️❣️
We just love the bee doctor!! Met him at the conference last year and bought his book. We will be taking that knowledge with us to our new Homestead very soon. We thank you guys for what you do out there. Shalom. Dawn @ rich & dawn in mn
THANK YOU! My hive this spring, looked just like the first hive on this video. Being new to bee keeping, and my first and only hive, it looked strong going into winter to me but turns out it wasn't a big enough swarm. :(. I actually sunk anchors into the ground, put eye bolts into the top of the legs and secured the hive. It gets very windy here, and also set it up to be protected on 2 sides from wind at the tree line. I also used the small expandable screen in the bottom and placed the cheap sticky pads under the screen. I hope for more success this year. Again Dr. Leo's passion is just infectious.
Dr Leo such a genuine guy hard to find someone like that today A++
I love the Bee painting on the hive!
So beautiful the painting is so beautiful
Thanks for this vid. Here in Sweden where we live I bought 3 vertical (EPS)hives this sommer and they talked about that I had to feed them 25 kg off sugar water directly after july. The moment I had to cary out the buzzing hives from my car to the place I wanted them was a big and havy undertaking. I was full off questions and just started with bees. Than I saw vids from Doug and Leo and now I am going to Layhan Hives also.
I didn't like cutting the brood nest in halv during hive inspection and I think the layhan system is much better. Even that sleep above your hive system is really something to do. Thank you all so much.
Fascinating! Eyes Wide Open. Right! Im watching every moment! Thank you for all you do for us and the bees. God blesses your work amen. Robin in NC USA
I was in Hannibal in 2018 and 2019. I met Dr Leo and Doug at those events. In 2020, we started a Market Garden in Virginia. In 2022, we are bringing loaner bees to our property collaboration with a bee keeper mentor. I signed up today for Dr. Leo's March 2022 course. Plan is to build Horizontal hives and Swarm boxes next winter for 2023 bee keeping on our own. No one in Virginia has heard of Horizontal hives, so I will be pioneering this effort in my area.
Nice!
Excellent video. Thank you. Looking forward to building new hives this spring.
Great video! Thank you! I need to get started reading Keeping Bees in Horizontal Hives . I bought it last summer with full intentions in being prepared this spring. Needless to say, life got in the way and now I am not ready! I have finished my book and getting it printed soon and that has been an adventure. Life! Keep 'em comin.
Beautiful hive.
I am so impressed! I have read about the conversion from Langstroth to Layens, but seeing it is so helpful. Dr Leo is THE dude! Looks like he only got stung once on the finger. I am not that brave.
Really cool. First time seeing someone work with bee hives. Thanks
Thank you. This answered many questions I had.
I had been looking forward to your spring inspection. Thanks for sharing and it's always fun to watch you and Leo work on the hives! Personally I would have kept the long lang and made a split into the layens a few weeks from now. Either way it's all good!
Beekeeping is so interesting. I love these videos.
The off the grid thing is 100% romantic.
This man like so many who claim to live off-grid is 100% supported by modern-day technologies that would not have been possible of city life etc.
Oh, the irony of ironies.
I thought the other art work was beautiful, but this one is the best knees!!❣❣❣
Love Your Videos Dr. Leo and off Grid 👍👍
Love hearing the bees buzzing.
That bee painting is gorgeous!!
WOW! this was truly amazing to watch! and very impressive and your experience really shows. thanx!
