- In "Taryl and Chuck Hill", Taryl demonstrates how to repair the flywheel magnets on a Kohler Engine (or Krohler as Taryl refers to it). Re-gluing in the flywheel magnets (if they're still in good condition and not broken, they do NOT sell just the magnets) in the certain steps that Taryl shows you will fix the problem of the charging system not working or charging the battery. Now there's your dinner!

Good job Taryl I've been working on mowers for 40 yrs
I think we're a dying breed
Most young guys if they didn't have Google they be lost. If they had use microfich cards.
Game over.
I have this problem a mont ago a replace that battery and today again but I haven’t done anything I wonder if is my voltaje regulator or my alternator start or on my Ezmark whit 22 hp kholer engine
Taryl Brother, that magnet schtick worked perfect!!!! I removed my flywheel via your trick and all 6 magnets were stuck to the stator. Drying now with JB quick. I fixed the mower, she can mow the lawn!
love your work, please eveyone dont skip Taryls youtube ads, he is worth being monetized!
huge help! replaced my stator and the magnets came out with it. Put it all together not knowing why it still wasn't charging the battery. I came across your video and tore it back down and glued them in. thankfully they were not broke. very entertaining too! keep doing what your doing.
I love the fact that you are a mechanical genius. That is something that I not only didn't know existed, but had no clue how to approach. I owe you'n's a beer for this one for real. Thanks for the videos, cheers!!
I just stumbled onto this guy and he is extremely knowledgeable as well as hilarious. And I know humor, because I used to write jokes for Conan O'brian.
Never did get around to sending them to him, though!
I took my flywheel off and two of the magnets were broke in half. I glued the magnets back in place with JB weld and 24hrs of curing time, I put it all back together and the system is charging just fine. So, there is hope without having to buy a new flywheel, I just pushed the two pieces together with the JB Weld and a clamp, and it works fine.
Hi Robert, Thanks for your input.
I have one broken magnet. Good to know that I can glue both halves back on the flywheel in the proper sequence and get it to work.
John
@WHATS YOURSOC Update: I glued the broken magnets back on the flywheel with JB Weld and now the charging system works perfect. Thanks to Robert Hills for sharing his knowledge.
John
Broken magnet.... About to put it together... Now that I know that it works... Thank you for the extra info. Appreciate it.
It works great. 43 volts AC. Thank you.
My Kohler was weak on power for over a year. I found your videos and felt that WE could fix it lol. My magnets were pulverized , I found a used fly wheel, stator, and coils and thanks to you...I was mowing with power in about two hours. Just wanted to say thank you... getting 47 AC from OUR repair!.... and about 13.5 at battery
I love the classic Taryl from back in the day.
this is this most informative video that I've seen
You guys rock!!!!! After having charging issues for years, I found this video and it answered all my questions and fixed the charging issue!! Thanks for making the videos.
I love this guy's personality. Great video and very engaging! Thank you for the detailed explanations and techniques.
This worked on my Kohler engine on a Dixie chopper i repaired just as shown here.
I found out it was a lot of dirt and balled up grass from the cooling cover down under the flywheel and across a few stators. Kohler courage 24 v twin. I did get an increase to the AC volts to 18.5 ish after and now runs on full throttle. Now the engine surges at low RPMs Taryl your prybar worked smoothly removing the flywheel ! Thanks.
Kohler charges $180 to replace this poorly designed flywheel which until now, I've had to purchase every other year. This fix works! Thank you.
Taryl and crew - thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I am an industrial electrician/maint tech and I share what I learned over 30+ years with anyone who is interested. Knowledge is essential and it needs to be shared, not hoarded. I dig your mechanical and comedy vids boy. Keep up the great work boy. And I hope to see Vic and his boss (oops, forgot his name) alot more. How about Jr doing some videos - shop stuff, drums, whatever he builds. You guys ROCK. Thank you boy.
Typical, I just went through this very repair on my garden tractor, shims, JB weld and all, and then I watch how to do what I just did. Thanks for the video guys, along with many others I surely appreciate your efforts. One note, all my magnets were found intact and attached to the stator, realizing their orientation may be critical I marked their location as found. I found myself wondering how I'd properly orient the magnets if I didn't find them as I did. Thanks to y'all now I know, and there's my dinner.
Yeah, I experience the same scenario: I look for good DIY help videos and I can't find "the one"; usually I have to create a playlist and save about 20 videos until I understand the solution then after I move forward to do my best then when I return to CZcams searching for another DIY Assistance video then occasionally in the "CZcams Recommend List is the best video"!
Thanks for this video sir! My mower stopped charging two years ago. I just mowed the lawn then put it on a charger afterwards. Somehow, my battery has survived all this.
Since I was tearing it down for it's annual spring maintenance, I decided to yank the flywheel and have a look. Sure enough, all my magnets were sticking to the stator, I imagine it won't charge well like that. :-) I will be cleaning it up and gluing them back on, thanks for the tips. I wouldn't have thought to look for this.
I fix my own equipment.....and I learn a lot from this man....
Thank you for the lessons Teryl...you the man.
First, thanks for your information about the magnets coming loose from the flywheel. My mower with a Kohler engine was not charging. Just a comment about the spacing when installing the magnets. The circumference of a circle is 6 times the radius. When I reattached my magnets I measured the diameter of the circle where the magnets attach. That would be the diameter of the circle. I then divided the diameter by 2 which gave me the radius. Then using a compass set to the radius I divided the circumference into 6 equal sections. When I reattached the magnets I used the marks I made with the compass as a guide so I got even spacing on the magnets. Just another approach. Use it if you'd like. Thanks again.
Fantastic video. Bought a Husqvarna tractor and noticed no output from the alternator/no charging. Ohmmeter showed the stator was good and I stumbled onto this video. Absolutely could not pull the flywheel with a puller and Taryl's pry bar and hammer worked like a charm. Popped the flywheel and sure enough, the magnets were off the flywheel. Replaced per the video and back in service !
+Tony Varga Great to hear Tony! And there's your dinner!
Another very useful video. Maybe one of your best. Even if I think I know how to fix something I come to Taryl first. It never fails that something new to me is found in every video. Thanks again guy. You should be a Tech school instructor.
If the magnets are stuck on the stator when you take the flywheel off, before removing them, mark every other one with the paint pen. That way you don't have to check them with a magnet, since they were stuck there in the proper sequence.
Not only that but you should never hit one of these Kohler command engines flywheels or the older Tecumseh cast iron engine flywheels with a hammer because that will knock the magnets off from the flywheel. The right tool to use is a harmonic balance puller or what I use which is a 5 ton hydraulic puller. Taryl you know better than that! but if even one is already off from the flywheel then take a hammer and hit the back side of the flywheel with a hammer where each magnet is. That will pop the rest off from the flywheel. Now I found that the best thing to use to do these magnets is a wire wheel in a drill to clean the inside of the flywheel and the backside of each magnet. Then get some acetone to clean it or gasoline. then you get your Best ones for vibration and high heat which are 2047 green, 266 red/orange, red 2700NA or RED 2760. You can also use 272 red or 277 red. The 266 red-orange is very high strength and heat up to 232c which is 450 degrees hot and handles high vibration or use the GREEN (Taryl already knows the one high heat green 2047 is heat resistant and very strong) loctite. that green requires a torch to remove the fastener. lol. Ive seen Taryl use the green before. lol. Put a thin coating over the back of each magnet setting them into their proper place as He shows. Then go set the flywheel in a warm 70 to 80 degree area (for faster set up) and you wont be able to pull that magnet off without it breaking after 24 hours of drying time. I know because I tried to remove them before and they will not come off without breaking by way of either screwdriver prying on a magnet OR hitting the backside of the flywheel with a hammer. I gave one a blunt hit with a hammer and it popped off in tiny pieces only. It was a junk flywheel. This was way back in the day. I was testing to see which was the best of like everything for holding these dam things in place. Specially on these dang Kohlers like this one here he just fixed. I got a dam exmark I have to do and that is going to be a big pain in the rear because of it having two shafts on it. Got to remove the pto adapter shaft from the flywheel side first after taking the belt off that runs the hydro pumps. Don't know what Crowler used to glue these in back in the day but it is way worse than what tecumish (as how Taryl would say it. lol. ) used. 56 years old and I too Own a small engine salvage as well. Done hundreds of these this way and never had one give way later or received even one complaint from a customer. I am a old Tecumish. lol. business seller of 39 years before they went out of business. Use to know like almost all the part numbers in my head of the cast iron old engines. kind of foggy now these days. lol.
Your hitting the bolt thats not touching the flywheel because the bolt was reinstalled loose. I worked in a john deere dealer out of 7 mechanics all of them did the pry bar hammer method. Bunch of nervous Nellie's out there that obviously have no experience.
Really appreciate your video. I like how you take the time to explain everything. You are a top rate mechanic. Enjoy the humor too!
great videos. mine had the same issue with the magnets. I was pulling my hair because I replaced the stator and the regulator and the battery and still no charge. I just assumed the magnets. belonged on the stator. and if not for information your videos are very entertaining. nice to see someone who really enjoys their job and making videos instead of the usual droning voice.
Fun watching these old videos. Thanks for keeping them all up, this was a great help to my grassrat butt.
You taught me alot. Did my fly wheel yesterday. Thanks for doing what you do.
Kohler courage with the same problem here. Thanks for all the tips. Especially the flywheel trick. You’re the best.
I recently discovered Taryl while having continuing headaches with my Craftsman lawn tractor with a Kohler Command twin. He really knows his stuff and makes it easy to understand and shows you how to do it. But he talks funny. Is that a Boston accent? Thanks, man!
Your videos have come a long way over the years, Taryl. Wooo Hoooo !!!
This is the best video, I have located on the Internet. Located and/or seen anywhere. I thank, You Tube and Taryl for finally putting togather a winner! Please, keep making videos! Thanks a Trillion!!!
Didn't know about the magnet arrangement so I was looking for an answer as to why my mower wouldn't start after replacing the flywheel. I got a likely answer in this video regarding the north and south poles of the magnets and their arrangement. I just stuck them in with no regard for the polarity plus I didn't epoxy them in place. Back to the drawing board for me. Thanks for the info!
Hey
He is like a fountain of wisdom and good humor !!
Taryl I found magnets for $34.50 a set on ebay. Mine was broken along with the starter gear, after some bone head tried to weld the gear. (also $34.50 ca-ching)
Thanks for the video good job
My magnets are broken and missing pieces. Could you please help me find the ones you used?
Good video, thanks.
for setting coil gap, I use index cards. They work great for that.
I think I knew how to do this but you guys cracked me up so bad, I had to review and I learned something to. Thanks!
Awesome! Exactly what was wrong with mine. Only thing I did different was I used 1/4" square stock for spacers and worked perfect. Thanks for the video!
Metal spacers can weaken mag field.
Tried this method with a broken magnet, so far we are good to go! Gotta love these krolers! Thanks for good basic helps!
Thanks Tyral,
I also had a broken magnet. I just spaced the magnets as shown i.e alternating North South poles and glued them with JB Quick to the inner face of the flywheel with the 1/8 inch recess from the top inner face of the flywheel. The one that was cracked I just placed the two pieces together where it was cracked and glued them to the flywheel. Got good A/C readings from the Stator and also good D/C readings from the center tap on the voltage regulator.
John
this one commercial break has been 8 minutes lol I hope this buys this man a drink at least
Fixed my neighbors mower using your advice. Works like a champ.
Wow, this video was the first time I ever heard taryl curse lol. It's like hearing a preacher curse. You dont like it but you want to hear more. I got no problem with it. I'm glad you keep it clean for all ages tho.
My fave Taryl video, and coincidently the first one I saw.
Thanks, man!!!
Best video I’ve found. Saved me $75 in repairs. I bought a sticker to show my support and appreciation.
Thanks for a great video. Just popped the flywheel off my engine and the magnets were stuck to the stator exactly as shown in your video. I used up all my JB Weld fixing the wife's dentures, so I have to run to the store and get some more before I glue the magnets back on.
TARYL you rule dude I don't think there's nothing you can't fix on a lawnmower tganks dude for the videos
9 years old!! Wow!!
I'm working on the same exact mower. 1 magnet is loose. Prob see if any others need jb.
Next problem is I can only turn crank 1 turn and it hits something. Pistons both move when looking in, valves move also. I actually took rockers off so I know a Poston isn't hitting one. Not sure what it's hitting. Will know tomorrow once I split the case.
Saved another person tonight. Thanks for these videos!
I've got my fly wheel, JB Weld, magnets, clothes pins, and clips on the dining room table right now... Let's GOOOOO!!
Very Good Video..Just what I was looking for...My Magnets all came un glued....Thank you sir...
Hi Taryl, That is one of the best how to videos I have ever seen. You taught me how to repair the problem on my "Krohler" and I'm still laughing at your antics. Keep up the good work! Hope you are going to sell Grass Rats t-shirts and bumper stickers. I'll be buying some.
I’ve Always Called it The “Stator Assembly “ Tarel 😎 Excellent Video
Amazed that I was able to get it on the first try on my Kohler V-twin. Still can't imagine how one magnet comes detached and the thing doesn't eat itself alive.
Taryl, you're wicked cool. Link your Paypal or Cash App and I'll donate.
Thank you!!!!!!!!
was your starter constantly getting stuck to the flywheel?
@@henrybenson9560 Mine was not.
thank you fun to watch and enjoy Christine
got an issue with my sv720...learned more from video than from the kohler web site.....rectifier was bad...thanks ...
Another really fine informative and entertaining video. Thank you Taryl Dactyl
Great video instructions and the comedy show was awesome 😂
Not only is this hillarious, It was very helpfull! Thanks Taryl
hard to beat a old timer great video thanks
I need to watch one of these everyday
Excelente amigo. Me sirvió mucho. Saludos desde Argentina
Man this is exactly the lesson I needed this morning for my ol Kohler I mean Kroler. You’re such a good man to share that with us Taryl I’m gonna send you a $100 so you can go see the dentist haha. Tnx brother !!!
Taryl’s crooked teeth play too important of a role in the order of the universe! Don’t upset his molar matrix!
Praying this is my old girls problem... Gravely pro 100 antique zero! My "KROLLER" 18 ain't charging.... man! Hopeing nobody steals the extra battery and the jumper cables with I'm cutting lawns.... I might duck tape the Battrey to the trailer for security porpouis! LMFFAO! Love your friggin videos!
Your feeler guage is so long! Awesome video
Thank you so much I had a couple of Kohler command they had to The same thing happened to them your video was really helpful
I just diagnosed my lx277. Thank you. Voltage regulator needed.
He is off the charts !!! There you go now, theres your dinner !
Very INformative and precise on all the videos ive used to work on my mower
GOOD STUFF BRO
QUESTIONS I COULDN'T GET ANSWERED, YOU ANSWERED
I APPRECIATE YOU AND THE BOYS. THX 😊
I love watching you and jr unfortunately I don't have small engine stuff but if I did I'll definitely take it to you
I think it's funny all the comment saying how he's doing it wrong when he's obviously been doing this forever
Think it was funny that when he was putting the coils back on the song "Boys are back in Town" was playing in the background lmao.
Does anyone know where to get replacement magnets for a ech749-3038 Kohler engine? Mine spit 3 of them and they broke to pieces took the stator with them😥
Daryl...YOU crazy LOL! love your videos G!!!
best video I seen in a very long time
thanks for the lesson I'm fixing a dixon ztr4422 with Kohler engine cv14 france
As always a great video Daryl. Sure appreciate the professional info, thanks.
Nice job...very good video and entertaining...thanks!
Thanks Taryl.
Didn't know the coils cranked out that high of a voltage. Gives me some ideas for my old JD110 using the diodes from an old G.M. alternator and mounting an external regulator. Maybe I could squeeze a little more juice from those coils...like a juice box!
Jon Myers
Taryl, U would have also been a freakin awsum motorcycle wrencher, this is pretty much the
chrg system in a Harley Sportster, U Rock man! I'll have a cold beer 4 ya later on!
You just got a subscriber!
Thank you Mr Taryl!
thank you taryl just in time for my stator repair on a kohler cv20s
I think I'll have to grab me a pair of these teeth. Thanks for all your videos and all the help you give. You've helped me out alot. I'm sure as a tons of others too. Thankyou again. Keep going. Love the humor also.
Funny AND factual....this solves my Kohler issues.
thanks for showing me how to test stator,
Love it guys..great stuff..ive got a 25 hp kohler ive got 43 ac volts at the new voltage regulator..and I installed a new stator but no charging voltage at the battery... Any ideas? Also checked all the wires and didnt see any that were cut or broken
That was some real good information, thanks and keep up the good work.
Thanks good teacher
funny , entertaining way to show how to fix. Thanks
12:50 "Hell yeah I did that!!". Taryl you're tooooo funny!!!!
great video Sir..Can i replace th single magnet flywheel that's on the outside
Old Terrell says you can't fix that new Terrell says challenge accepted
your the man, good job, wish you were my neighbor
best videos ever
Great lesson, best ever, keep it up guys.
This video was very good. However I discovered on our ferris mowers that the charging issue was caused by a missing ground wire on the voltage regulator... Wasn't included fron the factory, charges for 1500 hours then nothing.... Added a ground and we had charge.
@12:52 I damn near choked on my drink.
How perfect do the magnets have to be to work when you glue them back? 4 of mine have chips in the corners of various sizes.
On the onan 16 hp used in a Lincoln stick welder the same thing happens except the magnets get shattered. Had to find a used flywheel.
Going to try this on a Kohler Courage 22 next week...Thanks Grass Rats!
