    I’m an old duffer from Nebraska and am trying to learn some in depth details on repairs other than just plugs, carbs and gaskets. This was very very informative for me. I’ve subbed and will be watching. IMO an extremely educational video with great visibility, explanations and no horrible background music!!!!! A real BIG DEAL for me.

    • @IFIXIT4U

      Probably not. Most likely its a bad PTO Clutch or direct short in hot wire to PTO clutch. PTO clutch should pull 3-5 amps DC. Good luck. Thank you.

    hey, could you tell me what '15/20 amps' means, as a pm alternator output rating. thx

    • @IFIXIT4U
      @IFIXIT4U  Před rokem

      Keep in mind that on a regulated system. System will only produce what is needed depending on electrical load. System will produce a maximum of 15/20 amps depending on engine RPM that is set by equipment OEM & size of the magnets in the flywheel. 15/20 amp system is more than enough for a mower with lights and electric pto clutch. While testing DC amps from DC+ regulator to + battery, 4-8 DC amps would be normal. If you apply a electrical load you will see the amps go up. I hope this help you.
      Thank you

  • @squirrell500
    @squirrell500 Před 3 lety

    I've got an older Koehler ch740 and every time I disconnect it from the battery it will die. Is that normal? i have replaced flywheel, stator, and regulator.

    • @IFIXIT4U
      @IFIXIT4U  Před 3 lety

      Yes. That is normal. You need battery power for the fuel solenoid on the carb and most of the ignition systems on those early models. The charging system can shut down if no battery is present in the circuit. Also the equipment wiring harness plays a roll in that. Removing the battery power while engine is running tells me nothing about the condition of the charging system. Also its hard on the voltage regulator and other electrical components.
      Thank you

  • @styga1969
    @styga1969 Před 2 lety

    Question .. can’t you just ohm the 2 white wires to the stator ? And see if it shows it open? It’s just a wind of wires?

    • @IFIXIT4U
      @IFIXIT4U  Před 2 lety

      What if you have broken or missing magnets on the flywheel? What is the factory recommended ohm specs for the 3 engines in the video? How will you know if you are producing enough AC voltage. By the time you read this I have already tested the stator voltage and sitting down drinking coffee waiting on the ohm specs.

    • @IFIXIT4U
      @IFIXIT4U  Před rokem

      Is your stator like the ones in the video? ( 2 wires)? Are you connecting the stator to the volt meter exactly the way the video shows? Both meter leads to stator? If so. Sounds like your new stator is bad or the wrong one.

      @@IFIXIT4U thanks so much. But overnight I actually thought of the problem. The magnets came off of the fly wheel which I glued back on, but I think I got the orientation wrong on three of the magnets. So it would make sense that I’m only at 13 AC volts. I got a move the fly wheel and check those magnets. Thanks for your response. And yes I connected to the two wires from the stater

  • @DanielVia-zb7hr
    @DanielVia-zb7hr Před rokem

    What if the regulator is putting out over 16? Would that mean it’s over charging the battery and thus it’s a bad regulator?

    • @IFIXIT4U
      @IFIXIT4U  Před rokem +1

      The regulator puts out what is demanded. If you have a good battery and your electrical system is in good order. And you are not running any other electrical devices. Now if the regulator is putting out 16 amps I would say replace it.

    • @IFIXIT4U
      @IFIXIT4U  Před 2 lety +1

      @@Guerrero1187 yes the yellow wire on the switch is the charging wire, check it for burn marks or if its even still on the switch, that yellow wire goes all the way to the regulator on the engine, if possible check resistance with a volt meter , shouldn’t read very much resistance.

    • @IFIXIT4U

      There are only 4 possibilities. I will let you narrow them down. Stator, flywheel magnets, meter, Person holding meter. Make sure the stator is correct OEM stator. Make sure magnets in flywheel are good and not broken. When testing stator use AC Volts, see video. Try a different meter. Connect leads directly to stator, see video. Runs engine at full throttle. see video.

      Do the battery & stator test the same as video. You can test DC Amps buy pulling the correct fuse and using meter probes. By the time you do all 3 test you should have an idea of the problem if you have one.

      I check it at full throttle. A good stator will still put out AC Volts at half throttle. If you did the test per the video. Then your stator is bad.
