The Castellows' acoustic sets with just the three sisters Ellie, Lily and Powell playing are a real highlight of the show - fans get to hear the great vocals and harmonies, just like when they play unplugged in the silo :)
In this acoustic / unplugged set the Balkcom gals played two great unreleased original songs Sheltered and Homecoming. At some show they also played the unreleased gem Miss America too. They always finish off the acoustic set with Homecoming - that one starts slow and then the guys in the band return to finish off with a bang!
In some acoustic sets, the Balkcom sisters sang and played covers of Bruce Springsteen's I'm on Fire (see Ann Arbor show) or Emmylou Harris' Red Dirt Girl (see Fort Worth debut and the Shreveport show). Here Lily asks if the fans want to hear Springsteen or Dixie Chicks and they go with The Chicks' Travelling Soldier.
There were some technical difficulties at this show with Ellie's wireless guitar not working. While sorting things out Lily asks what songs the crowd wants them to play and some young girls in the front row shouted out 'Hurricane' - Lily responds that 'yes' they will be playing that one. One girl then gives Lily a friendship bracelet that says Castellows and Lily asks her name. She says 'Alberta', to which Lily replies "Alberta, like in Canada? I'm surprised I knew where that was" - fun banter while sorting out the technical difficulties :) IMHO good banter can really make a show better, connecting to the audience.
The acoustic sets are so well received, its no wonder the ladies are recording 'acoustic sessions' version of their upbeat EP songs too - they released Hurricane and Cowboy Kind of Love and I hope we can hear more soon. (oh! A Little Goes A Long Way has an acoustic sessions version now too)
