  • It's been a quiet month. And with some rides coming up, I thought I'll do a quick oil change on the DRZ since it's not had one in a while. I also do a quick walk around of the bike to see how my vinyl wrap is holding up after some rides. Nothing beats some long term testing!

Good Video. Just a couple of suggestions as we are all learning something from each other.
    1) The colour of the oil is not always a good indication of the condition as modern oils have detergents added. You would need to send a sample off to a lab for a true indication of the condition of the oil.
    2) After 13000km and oil changes every 3000km, I am still using the same crush washers and just use a torque wrench to tighten to 18nm. Never had an issue with oil leaks or stripping the threads.
    3) It is always a good idea after dropping the oil to lean the bike from side to side to get all of the oil all out. That 100ml of oil you thought that was burnt is still in there. Try it next time and see how much extra oil that you can remove by using this method. I always also measure what comes out (1800ml) with removing the the oil filter and replace it with 1800ml.
    4) There is a oil screen that needs to be removed every 2nd or 3th oil change. This will also show how much metal is filtered.
I have just finished swing arm / linkage service, fork oil replacement, shock sent away for service, coolant change, brake flush.
Keep on top of your servicing on the DRZ and they will run for a long time without any major issues.

      1. agree about the oil, but I guess a visual check and a finger-ridge-test is all we can do at home.
      2. There was a time that I didnt change the crush washers, but then I bought a bunch of crush washers on ebay so I like to think of myself now as having better habits! haha!
      3. That's absolutely true! I do tilt the bike back and forth normally, completely slipped my mind this time!!! Good catch!!!
      4. To be honest I've never gotten around to undo that oil screen. I tried once, but didn't have the right tool to do so, so gave up. But yes, I should!
      5. Absolutely! In fact I plan to do a video on greasing the swingarm and suspension bits! I'll be going to my mechanic mate's place cos they've got grease guns and all that jazz!
Really appreciate the comments mate! It's always nice to hear from you guys!

@@OnTwoWheels The grease nipples on the swing arm and elbow work well to keep the bearings well greased but the problem lies with the swing arm bolt that starts to rust in the centre of length of the bolt which can seize. It's a good idea to remove the swing arm bolt every couple of years to inspect and regrease. If seized, you can use a brass drift and hammer to tap it out.

@@OnTwoWheels If concerned about your oil condition, you can send of a sample to a lab which will analyse and send you a report. I think it only costs around $30.00.

haha! The moment I had to lay on the ground to take the bash plate off, the thought crossed my mind too!!! But then I thought, a wardrobe change mid-video would be a bit much!
