  • In depth 8 part series on how prosthetic sockets are made for an individual with limb loss. Specially, in this case, a bilateral above knee (knee disartic) by Dream Team Prosthetics in Duncan Oklahoma. Self filmed, edited and narrated by patient for life lol Limb Loss Boss. This series shows start to finish steps in the fitment and fabrication process of prosthetic sockets, and the end user walking on new legs!! #limblossboss #myleglesslife #dreamteamprosthetics #prosthetic #prosthetics #interesting #howitsmade #howitworks #cool

    I'm a tech at a prosthetics company, I get to do this every day and it's awesome!
    I like seeing the little differences in how other companies make their end product, and the small differences in parts used as well, different pyramids and stats adaptors etc.
    Cool stuff. It's a fun and rewarding job for sure.

      It looks like an interesting career path. Mine is from Martin Bionics. Have you heard of them? Do you have an opinion about the company? I've heard mixed reviews about them. I'm new to this but my experience so far has been great. They make adjustable sockets to eliminate the need for adding and removing socks throughout the day. They also manufacture on site so the turn around is much faster than companies that use a third party.

    • @Slim_Sumo
      @Slim_Sumo Před 14 dny

      @@jay_tripp I'm west coast, so I haven't heard of Martin but a quick search looks like they're the same type of orthotic and prosthetic company as ours. Their Google reviews seem good enough. Being a local company to that area, regardless of reviews, you're going to get much better results and care planning than you would with the national corporate companies namely The Hangar.
      I make the adjustable sockets pretty often as well, using the BOA system (ratcheting cable wheel that loosens and tightens as needed), though they don't work for everyone.
      On site fabrication is your #1 marker of quality of the facility in this industry. Central fab is fine for small generic things but when it comes to a fully customized device if it's not made on site the care quality just slips and slips. Not many companies do in house fabrication anymore either so you've already got a one up, and sounds like you'll be well taken care of :).

    How do you make the first cast of your residual limb? The skin and muscle there seems quite floppy when you take everything off so wouldn’t you get a lot of space in the wrong places when you cast it?

    • @Slim_Sumo
      @Slim_Sumo Před měsícem +3

      This is what I do for a living, there's a couple ways it can be done with the initial eval casting.
      One way would be to set on a stool or the edge of the exam table, with the other stump hanging relaxed pointed at the floor off the edge. Another would be to lay back on the exam table with the stump pointed at the ceiling. The prosthetist knows where pressure needs to be applied and will hold that part of the residual to create a basis to work off of. (When he says the socket gets all up in your business he ain't lying, we gotta get all up in your business to take the cast too)
      Sometimes we put lipstick on the patients leg in the places we want to create pressure spots or reliefs, the lipstick sticks to the casting tape and then transfers to the plaster when it's poured! So when it comes my turn in the shop to modify things I can see exactly what is needed and where for each step.

    Years ago, my uncle had two wooden, yes, wooden legs. He made money with his. He would go to his fav bar and throughout the night bet money he could kick a wall 20 feet away. Drunks would take his bet. Uncle would take his leg off and throw it against the wall. Laugh while taking their money. Yep, he also was not feeling any pain.
