  • In this video we investigate why the STOP START is not working on Kate's Land Rover Discovery Sport. With no fault codes or error messages and a good battery we decide to change the BMC. You can change the BCM without any coding and this fixed our problem ! The PN for this module ( latest version ) is LR038721. We do stock these on our website also :-

    Top tip. Keep the plastic battery terminal covers when you get a new battery instead of binning them and you can put them on the terminal if you need to take the leads off. Safer than a rag that may fall off.

    Simon…my Stop Start has rarely ever worked on mine since new and I am pleased for it to stay like that…I hate the stress of one second cycles and understand it puts a load on the timing chain to shorten its life. I have noticed that it will work in random spurts every so often but was told that failing to work is usually a sign of the battery getting old and tired. Certainly a new battery brings it too life but on my car, not for long. As I type, my friend has this fault on his Discovery but the battery is certainly three years and 60,000+ miles old. Maybe his BMS is dying because his has become very random….for me though…not working is perfect! 😃😃😃Richard.

    I've got start/stop on my VW and I switch it off every time. I cannot see how it can possibly save fuel and even if it does I'm sure the additional cost of a replacement start/stop battery (it's a lot more expensive) would negate any saving in fuel.

    • @umac01
      @umac01 Před 5 měsíci

      Yes, same with Audi, I hit the off button on the stop start as soon as I pull off the drive. I replaced the battery after 4 years and only 20,000 miles use. I blamed the Stop Start system for the short life of the battery.

  • @matthewhaddon599
    @matthewhaddon599 Před 9 měsíci

    Been there done that. The best way to check the operation is to go into live data when the car is warm, in either BCM or PCM and check for Stop/Start inhibit data...this will tell you the reason that the stop/start is not working. You will probably find that it comes up with battery performance or similar..it won't be the BMS module that you changed. The reason it works now is because you reset the battery. As the system takes time to relearn the battery level you will find that it will stop working again after a couple of weeks.
    Basically it needs a new battery...the battery should be tested off the vehicle as well...charge to full capacity, leave overnight and it should be 12.7v or better.
    The older dual battery system which I have on my Jag seems much more reliable.

    • @simonjefferson
      @simonjefferson Před 9 měsíci

      You may of course be correct - but i will share data that i find - the only thing that makes me think we will be OK is that Land Rover make a point that you can damage the BCM with charging leads etc... so maybe it is damaged. Also crazy it does not store an error code for "stop start not working due to low battery" or similar. Its madness to have a system that is not working and there is no data / warning / error message.... the car is loving life but its not working correctly !

    • @matthewhaddon599
      @matthewhaddon599 Před 9 měsíci

      @@simonjeffersonYou should get a fault code if the BMS is faulty in theory. For some reason you don't get a fault code for low battery performance. It will however show this in live data. I did have a Discovery Sport with this issue and I did a lot of investigating the problem. You won't damage the BMS by charging the battery direct to the terminals as long as you use a decent charger, but it is best to use a different earth point to prevent spikes on the system.
      I tried changing the BMS as you have done, but I bought a good secondhand one to save some money. It worked for bit as I already mentioned due to resetting the battery. It takes a few days for the system to relearn the battery level, but once it realises that the battery is still low on capacity it will prevent the Stop/start working again.

    start-stop is a very bad idea. Wife's 2021 House Honda Pilot start/stop system recalled- first try was a system reboot and that failed- so Honda used $1,400 worth of parts to fix it. If I have to drive it I always push the botton to over ride the system.

    I have a 2016 Disco 4 which has the ECO warming light on all the time. It have a stop / start battery and my understanding is that it’s only used to support the systems while the main one does the actual startup.
    I have generic error code P0615 which is defined as “Starter motor relay -circuit malfunction”. Both batteries have sufficient voltage 12.3-12.6.
    While I’m happy that stop/start doesn’t work, the amber light really pokes in the eye.
    Any way of checking if the BMS is the issue ?
    Thanks

    • @L663
      @L663  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I am not really an expert on these things - it makes sense that the small battery is to support the other systems. It does not sound like a BMS issue - seems more like the relay circuit but as the starter motor works this is a little odd !

    Stop start generally won’t work if the car is running air con or the outside temperature is low. It is designed to protect the cars battery.
    Plus, slightly moving the steering wheel when stopped will also restart the engine or pulling a large load on the battery with heated screens both on for example can prevent stop start working to protect the battery.
    Another point is, with the light on the switch illuminated are you sure that means on or off? For example, my lane assist switch illuminates when I have lane assist turned off and not as you would think turned on.
    Yo me stop start is a total pain in a manual cr but fabulous in an automatic.

    • @L663
      @L663  Před 9 měsíci

      At the end of the video the light is on and stop start was working then so LIGHT on = START STOP operational.
      Valid points about the electrical load - although the start stop has never worked since Kate has had the car - now it works most of the time so i am pretty sure we have fixed it.

    • @freelander_adventures

      I notice there was a HVAC fault code stored. It would have been interesting to know what that was and if clearing it let the Start/Stop work again.
      So many parameters need to be met before it works too which owners often overlook too.

      When charging the battery on most JLR (where the battery is in the boot/luggage area) the charge terminals are in the engine bay. So, in the Evique and DS this isn’t the case, so where do you put the charger connected to not damage the BMS?
