STOP/START is a feature on modern cars to reduce emissions by reducing the idle time on your engine when stationary. This works in theory but in reality, there are often issues causing this system to not work as intended.
there are certain criteria that needs to be met inorder for the system to work properly.
this differs from manufacturer to manufacturer so we always recommend checking out the owners manual for a comprehensive list, but we will go through the main reasons that people run into issues here.
    1. AC, Your Air conditioning being active is considered too high a draw on the battery when the engine isnt running. the car recognises this and to prevent not having enough power to restart, it de activates the function all together.
2.Engine coolant temp. the biggest reason for wear on your engine is during a cold start up. this is because the oil hasn't been fed through the engine yet so the car intentionally waits until the coolant temperature is above a certain limit which ensures a good operating temp for the engine and that sufficient oil has gone through the internals of the engine. once this criteria is met, stop starts when warm have minimal wear effect.
    3. Repeated stop starts. once a succesful stop and start has been carried out by the system, there is a minimum distance and/or speed that has to be met before another stop start can occur. this is to again ensure the engine has enough time to recirculate oil through the engine and prevent premature wear.
4.DPF clean. the diesel particulate filter collects soot from the engine and occasionally runs through a self clean procedure. while this procedure is being carried out the engine must remain running. if it is interrupted then the process will need to be repeated the next time the car is started up. the system knows this and de activates the stop start system to make sure it doesn't interrupt the procedure. too many failed dpf cleans can cause a blockage in the dpf.
    5. Battery State of charge. the battery must be over 80% charged. if this threshold isnt met, then the stop start wont work. This is because the system weighs the risk on if there is enough charge to restart the engine similar to the AC issue.
if however the engine stops but you are waiting for a prolonged period of time, the battery may fall bellow the 80%. this would mean the auto start up kicks in before intended as a way to counter act the issue. this auto start up would kick in if any of the listed criteria isnt met.
Stop start complaints will be very common the more people start using their cars again after lockdown. we hope this video has given you something to think about if you run into these issues.
hope this helped, have a great day and STAY SAFE people!

I'd deduced a lot of this a week into owning my first car with Stop-Start but also noticed that it tends to manifest as the car deciding it will or won't work at the start of a journey and then nothing I do on that journey will change it! I do noticed the failure tends to be on the outward journey after sitting for a a day or so so I guess it's almost always down to the battery charge (I was doing things like turning off the AC and even the heat/fan down).
I've decided to stop worrying about it now :)

are your reverse lights working? most aftermarket reverse sensors are linked to the live for the reverse lights, so this is something to check.
otherwise if they came as factory standard then they could have their own separate live. if you have your owners manual, you could locate the fuse and check that hasn't blown. there are a few other things that can be checked too, so ill keep this topic under consideration for a future video. Thanks for bringing it up.

Ok, I have a 2017 ford escape titanium 1.5L FWD. I just did a transmission swap.( old one died, had hard shifting problems and then after driving for over an hour it just wouldn’t go into gear and got stuck in a high gear and just burnt up trying to get it to a parking lot) the transmission swap went really well but now I have this one issue. The auto start stop will do a hard shift when cutting back on, this sometimes doesn’t happen if the auto start was active longer than 30secs to a minute, ( it’ll work as normal) but if it was activated at like a short stop ( ie a stop sign) it’ll do hard hard shift then drive normally… the adaptive values and KAM was reset to my knowledge with the new transmission. Any thoughts on what the issue is?

On short trips of 5-7km the battery does not charge more than 70%, that's if I still light up the position and "force the charge"
After 50% the battery no longer charges with 14.8 decreases to 12.8 and with the positions on it charges by 13. 8.
Disabling the start stop doesn't help much.
Do you have any idea of a "trick" to trick load management into sitting in 14.8V?

I'd recommend leaving it trickle charge overnight. That's the best way to rule out the battery . Even though you drive for 20 minutes you won't be 100% sure the charge has reached the threshold in that time. An overnight charge is a good way to not only get a good surface charge but to re engage those battery cells which have been dormant the last two weeks.

It displays for a couple of seconds after the car's stopped, then disappears. The car's less than two weeks old, and the dealer's service dept. has me waiting 10 days to get in! I have driven two rebadged Opel diesel Insignias with this system. It stopped working in both cars at around 65000 miles. The second car has had a new battery and over 130,000 miles and it still doesn't work. Also when it worked it would not operate after about 3 or 4 cycles in traffic whether in town or on the motorway in a traffic jam. The particulate filters in both cars were in full operation. The second car also has Adblue fitted to reduce NOX emissions. Frankly the stop start system was just a gimmick.

Does anyone know if it can cause problems changing gear when it’s not working properly?

I'd be quite happy if the stop/start stopped working on my three year old Dacia. It'll save me having to remember to disable it every time I start the car. Cheers!

My problem is my stop start just doesnt do it. Ive had a look with a bi directional scanner and you can activate it via the scanner, but it was programmed after a new battery and now just doesnt do it. So... Battery not suitable? Or some programmed value out of range?

I understand how it all works but does battery management look at volts or the amps in the battery. Because if the volts are there im seeing the systems are still trying to work. But the amps are not there causing another issue. What do u think.

It looks at amperage, but it also monitors how well the cells maintain a charge and it determines a "state of health" aswel as a "state of charge" this can take 24hrs to monitor. because of this, some people opt to charge the battery slowly with a "trickle charger" often leaving it charge overnight to bring the battery back to tolerance.

@@MTMMotorServices cheers for the reply. But do all manufacturers battery monitor systems look at amps. Only reason i ask this is vag stuff i believe looks at volts. If it looked at amps then stop start wouldn't have a issue. I.e. stop starting a lot in one month on short journeys kills the battery. Where as someone who live i countryside dont have issues as there able to charge the battery enough.
Would u advise people in heavy condensed cities to switch the system off if they are stop starting in a 5mile drive more than 50 times. As ive seen a person stop start more than 200 times in a drive cycle and 8 times the system failed where they had to manually start the car. This in my eyes is a human error not car system error. Education advised on stop start, etc. What do u think. Cheers.

You might have to check if you have to tell the car it has had a new battery via diagnostic machine.
Otherwise, 24 hours after the replacement the sensors should detect the change in battery quality

First point is already a miss. most cars power their aircon by the movement of the engine (belt) and not through electricity. so the air con will not draw current it will just not work, and therefore s&s may not kick in.
