- Bob Cousy's last NBA game (as a Boston Celtic). Cousy could really play like a showman when he wanted but appears to play very fundamental here, perhaps to secure the win in his last game. Note his unique one hand push shot from the outside, no longer in style as it requires the use of a screen unlike the quicker more versatile jump shot.
18 points, *9 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals
(officially credited with seven assist) - Sport
Cousy's passing is elite in any era
Great for the time for sure. Not enuff power behind them in tidays passing lanes imo. Lots of turnovers.
@@raginghandicap1115 If he had lived today, he'd have played at a high level. He had super long arms, and abnormal peripheral vision. He would have trained like they do today.
@@chrisbera7952no he plays like a WNBA player. He runs like a women.
Dang its a shame that new generations don't really mention him anymore despite the fact that legendary passers like Pistol Pete, Larry Bird, and etc. learned tricks from him.
His passes are actually better than those of the ones that you mention, except for Maravich's ones which wer also great.
Please don't mention Pistol he's extremely overrated
@@coachwane WHAT???????????
Pete Maravich is the best ball handler and playmaker of all time, the 2nd best scorer in NCAA after KAreem Abdul Jabbar, he also scored 68 points in an NBA game. If you say Maravich is overrated then you don't have a clue about basketball.
@@alfredodistefanolaulhe2212 nah. U buggin.
@@TheIcemanthomas Go watch his 68 point game an stf up, it's available here in youtube.
I can't get over Cousy shooting the left-handed hook shot from about 15 feet! I wouldn't have shot that in practice much less the NBA championship. And he made it. Could he play today? Absolutely. His passing was excellent. Today's players would love to play with a PG who passed like Cousy.
And his dribbling , strength , shooting would be up to par based on modern training, etc..
This is kind of a turning point, historically, of the game. Cooz still taking set shots, running hooks. And here come Baylor, West, Bob's rookie teammate Havlicek, bigger, stronger jump shooters. And of course, Oscar at Cincy. A real turning point of how the game was evolving.
Oh he absolutely could not. He's a career 37% shooter. He'd be a less athletic Rubio with no defense
@@mdmccrea you obviously have never played at a high level.
@@Amick44 very true

Facts
He is carrying and doing a precious and unique work, even though It should be the NBA doing that already.
Basketball has always been good. The style may change, but when the competitiveness is there, it's magic.
People that say todays players would kill these guys makes no sense at all because they were those guys lol every era the best players are playing in the nba for the most part….. its evolution but dont discredit these ogs 💯
All I see is DEevelotion. Rules getting watered down to compensate for players lack of fundamentals. If they ref a game today like they did in the 50's, the game would never finish due to constant fouls. They have just watered the game down and turned it into slop ball.
2:32 Anyone who hates on the old school needs to look at this travel call and understand the implication in style of play. Traveling was so much tighter of a call than now meaning guys worked on having a simpler dribble back then.
2:34 They call a travel on this one. Imagine this type of call in today's league. The rules back then was very disciplined.
That left handed hook, my goodness
1:35 what a pass
Really enjoyed the post game interview with Red. He gives props to the Lakers and is grateful for victory. He is often depicted as gruff and arrogant ( sometimes deservedly so), but this shows a balanced side of the man and coach.
And his players have the highest regard for him.
Cous was terrific for sure.
This is the fastest basketball I’ve ever seen
They didnt waste any time taking shots. Kinda like the nba all star games today without as much ability .
@@daneosborn3476 nah they can run organized fast breaks unlike todays players
you're the best for uploading these high quality vids. tough to find this type of quality. gives a great glimpse into the era.
Haha that interview at the end is great

Speedin!
Nice hook by the Cousy at 3:23
Bunch of knuckleheads here saying these old-timers couldn't play today. But they misunderstand that they developed their style to fit the competition. Had they come along now, _they would adapt their style to fit the competition._ They wouldn't be playing 1950s or 1960s hoops. They were elite players, and would find their way today.
Anybody that can hit a running left handed hook shot, which was his off hand, effortlessly, could adapt to any style of play.
They’d have to practice shooting the 3 pointer if players from that era wanted to compete in today’s NBA. Also, quit shooting those ridiculous looking set shots. Those shots would be slammed right back in their faces if they tried them today.

The Boston Celtics absolutely owned the Lakers in those days
Cousy NEVER "played like a showman" just for helluva it, only when it was the only way to deliver a pass.
WTF, Cooz is kicking my man West's behind, damn
2:32 The entire NBA now couldn't hack it back then. They wouldn't even be able to get a dribble off lol.

Not sure about that one chief
Cousy so old he had to be digitally restored.
Great-I don't think he could get that one handed set off today. 6'6"" guards. BUT, not taking anything away. Great distributed and perfect for rest of cast.
Thank you for the comment - I always notice these players look self aware of their spacing which is necessary to avoid getting blocked, just as important as what shoot is being chosen - notice he takes it off of screens so as to get open enough to take it. He did have a jump shot as well to get more elevation on his shot but he rarely used it unless he was in the lane - but point being if he felt he needed to adjust his shooting for any reasons such as lengthier or quicker defenders he probably could have. Jerry West was actually a great shot blocking guard with a 6-9 armspan, he didn't get Cousy's shot this game so Cousy must have been aware of the space and timing necessary to attempt his shot in front of Jerry
Not too often. He'd have to shoot jumpers.
Golden
Do you have web site?
Is there a way u can restore the whole game this way?
Sweeeeeet
Damn Cousy barely uses his left hand. This reminds me that the game evolved so much.
Most were trained not to. They believed it was reckless.
If I'm not mistaken the rules made it so it was risky to do so without getting some kind of violation. There is a video on this channel that explains it. Like how big men weren't allowed to physically back down the defensive player without an offensive foul being called.
They had rules that wasnt allowed
But he could use his left hand. Like that hook shot he hit with his left was incredibly skilled.
@@icteotm4108 This, they thought unless you were ambidextrous you would be less efficient using your off hand. Thus they were taught only to use it when absolutely necessary. Years later many were still coached this way over in Europe. Clyde Drexler played like that also
Wilt-he was aware of spacing, and used picks well.Think today's guards would jump over picks and block shot.Don't THI k I saw his jumper. SHREWED POINT GUARD,with an formally long arms.
It's possible, - and just to be clear you're correct he didn't use his jumper this game - I've only got two clips of him shooting jumpers in my entire collection of his career footage and both are in the lane and I think he shot jump shots in those situations because a defender was close enough to block a push shot - so he only rarely used it. He was a play maker more than a scorer he rarely isolated or went for one on one plays on offense - mostly pick and roll ball handling, and transition game were his bread and butter and he was really elite at that
Wilt- yes-STOCKTON was a stronger, more modern day version of Cousy.TEAM FIRST- UNFORTUNATELY,no championships, like Bob.
Players today only know slop ball and refs that don't call much of anything. The ball in this video is FAR superior to anything today. Better passing, stronger defense, better shooting, and all strictly within the rules. Makes todays NBA look like garbage.
I watched a video recently of some idiots making fun of Bob Cousey (Bob Cousey be like). I guess they forgot to do their reasearch.
damn kyrie really got nothing on cousey
Damn thats an ugly jump shot
One hand push shot! - Cousy also had a jump shot but you don't see it in this game, his jump shot looked like a normal jump shot but he only used it mid range in traffic to try and get over the defense. Push shot looks ugly but for him it worked from long range so long as he had daylight like off of screens. Basketball in the 1950's, when he was in his prime, had a wider variety of perimeter shots than today. Everyone shoots jump shots today no matter the range. Back then, you had set shots, push shots, jump shots, etc before everyone figured out that a jump shot could actually do it all. Easier to learn one shot and master it than 3, 4 or 5 ways of shooting from outside.
reapect to the greats. but players are way better today.
Today's players appear better because the rules have totally changed which has allowed the game to progress. A lot of what players do today would be violations back then - the step backs, the Euro step, steps going to the rim, contact with the defender, dribbling moves like crossovers, etc... all this stuff and more were not allowed then so it was a much different game. It's like comparing apples to oranges.
Shut up idiot the NBA from the 50s to 80s are BLOODY beautiful to watch no crazy drugs no refs calling on bullshit fouls the Hardwood Classics players now those are REAL men the NBA now some of the players is a Hilton

Shut up
See jj redick is so flawed in his thinking, the nbas rules used to operate in a similar fashion to if the mlb disregarded homeruns because the ball went out of play. You simply couldn't use your instincts to your full advantage. I hold any 50s 60s 70s player in the same/higher regard to the modern players. And the fact no one seems.to know what encompasses athleticism ruins what the word means.
These highlights from the 1963 NBA finals give the impression that Bob Cousy was a good shooter. He was not. Far from it. For his career, Bob Cousy was a 37.5% shooter. Not good. Looking at this video, you’d think that Cousy rarely missed. In reality, he missed a lot.
Kobe Bryant was a poor percentage shooter also. Do you consider him a great player?
@@jamesanstead6850 his effiency wasn't bad as people think it was. It was a false narrative when he's one of the most efficient players
Man he was slow. Cinder blocks for feet
By this time he was 35 years and in his 13th and final year so he had lost a step or so by then .
Really? How about you look up his numbers. Slow or not.
Shut up you should be ashamed of yourself
Zion would dominate these guys.
Top Dog Zion doesn’t know the rules of that era - he’d have to play finesse no bully ball allowed with the charge calls of that era - watch Baylor’s highlights as he collects offensive fouls and how he gets around players for an idea how Zion might look with adjustments for the rules
@@WiltChamberlainArchive Theres always these young idiots who have to chirp about how their "players of today" would eat the old timers alive. Never fails.
@@WiltChamberlainArchive if they played in today's rules they would get wrecked by d1 college players
Much of Zion's game would be against the rules and would be violations then. The way Zion dribbles would be called carrying, his physicality going against defenders would be called offensive fouls, his step backs and steps going to the rim would be called traveling. His set shot would be all right tho.
