I’m convinced that theNBA just doesn’t want us to see what happened back in the day. They are hiding something. And I think it’s the fact that Wilt and Bill would really SMOKE the NBA

I’m 81 years old. I saw both of these guys in their prime. Trust me on this: If Wilt had the supporting Bill had, his team would have lost no more than 5 games a year. Russell was a truly great player. Unbelievable defensive player who could guard any player on the floor, regardless of position, fabulous rebounder. Underrated offensive player who averaged over 16ppg, without looking to score. Excellent hook shot, excellent post moves. Great athlete. Very fast, could jump out of the gym, terrific passer from the post, and a superb outlet passer as well. That said, Wilt was from another planet. The NBA has never seen his like, and
never will. Incredible blend of speed, strength, and skill. Had the best turnaround jump shot in the history

This reminds me of when people used to argue over who was better between Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith. Emmitt can't touch Barry in terms of skill, not even close, but Emmit had a Hall of Fame quarterback (Troy Aikman), Hall of Fame receiver (Michael Irvin), and Pro Bowl bound offensive lineman. Barry had Barry. The defense knew Barry was the only weapon the Lions had, and they *still* couldn't stop him.
If Barry had the team Emmitt had, he would have been broken every single rushing record in the book.

One of the best midrange shooters ever don't let anyone tell you any different! Also some other greats were Hal Greer, Gail Goodrich, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, and Bill Sharman.

Russell, Wilt were excellent athletes as were several other's in that era. Baylor, Gus Johnson, West was pretty athletic, too, even young Oscar.

All you often hear from his era is "Oscar and Jerry" "Jerry and Oscar." And understandably so. But Sam as well as Lenny Wilkens and Hal Greer, were legit great guards as well.
I hate how people dismiss this era as "a bunch of plumbers and milkmen". Like sure the talent and skill has grown since then, but you know what these were the best people that could play the sport at the time bar none.
It was the modern era when they were playing.
Right and we always look back on players and judge them with the knowledge we have from today. But none of that information was available at the time. That's why it's hard to compare players if different eras. You can't put them on the same playing field with so many different variables from their own eras. We should just enjoy what they did and remember that everything they did contributed to what we have today.

This actually not true, some of the best of this time were still playing in the neighborhoods. They had some boys that were skilled with that ball that would of made this era very entertaining, they were just born a little too early.
I’m from the 80s and it’s one thing my generation does that I never agreed with. We compare these players to the new players. We compare different eras and you can’t do that. The kids today are damn near cyborgs compared to the competition Jordan had, Damn near any player today will be elite in the 80s, it’s time we only compare people in each era cause it’s not fare to the these legends at all.

Wilt DID clock Clyde Lovelette in this series for playing him dirty, and also for injuring Wilt's jaw with a deliberate elbow in 1959.
Wilt used to stay with Bill Russell when they played.
I would simply not know how else to describe these two. Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain were both ferocious on both ends of the court. They dominated with their height and their abilities to defend and score at anytime. They were so agile and strong that many other teams they played against were left helpless. These two sold a lot of tickets at ballgames and that's also what made them both so special. You've had legends after them, but the real surprise was that they've met each other in the finals and knew what they were both up against: each other. However, the Celtic's teams of those days had many great players around Bill Russell. The 76rs had Wilt to practically carry that team, then when the Lakers had Wilt, they also had a few other great players too as well, but the focus was on these two greats to compete against each other. This is why they always filled arenas. By the way, great job on the color re-creation here.

a pleasure to watch. So clean and beautiful. No half-hour iso dribbling, no open lanes, no three point baskets from half court. Just trying to score as fast as possible by using their athleticism and their brains. And great defense. Maybe the three point line IS the problem.

Amazing video! Love the quality of the restoration. A few things I notice: Wilt and Russel would be able to hold their own against modern day NBA centers: both had amazing shot-blocking, as well as motor and athleticism. Also, Sam Jones is an almost automatic scorer.

Watching this makes me understand why the pace back then was similar to today's game because they're doing a lot of the same things, quick offense, fast breaks, pull up jumpers, and deep shots coming off screens. I won't lie the plumbers narrative and memes shaped my perception of the game back then like in reality they were not the cleanest ball handlers but they were still athletic and fast.
There were many strict rules back then. You were only allowed to dribble the top of the ball. Makes everything more stiff and less fluid. I get amazed when I hear that these guys supposedly couldn't dribble with their weak hand. I can dribble with my opposite and I'm not skillful. Skill is overated anyway.
Russell seemed to have no answer for that shot off the glass from Wilt. Russell looks limited offensively but his speed and timing on defense and rebounding is incredible. Wilt looked like he could block anything.
Nobody had an answer for it. Wilt was the original shooter of the fadeaway at the center position and got a lot of his points off of it. People tried to claim he started shooting it because of Russell, but there's video of him shooting the fallaway in college. It was an almost unstoppable shot. The Wilt Chamberlain Archive CZcams channel has a great video on it.

The pace of these games is night and day compared to today's game.
It was actually at a similar pace to what it is now, it's just all the time in between the current era and their era it was slower. There's other videos that illustrate this on graphs. It's no coincidence the greatest scoring seasons are right now and back then.

10:50 refs were a lot more entertaining back then. This is amazing footage. Really shows the opponents that Wilt faced aren't as small as they say they were. He just had an incredible arsenal of different shot types that no one does anymore. I could only imagine how many people told Bill Russell in his face that he wasn't in the top 5 greatest of all time since they never had a chance to see him play live but he has all the rings to prove it. Gather steps have been around since the 80s bro and today’s defense is probably the best we’ve ever seen. Only thing that can compare is the early 2000s
Pretty easy to play consistent defense when everyone barely moves 😂😂 I’m not trying to diss these guys, they were obviously the best of the best in their era! But watch defenses try to switch around screens and chase Curry all around the court. Don’t be fooled by gatekeeper old heads, defense is much tougher nowadays.

I read wilts book a while back and he had said that any true 7foot center could score 30-40. points a game if the team passed the ball to him..but than nobody would want to watch it since it would be boring. Hence the bird magic Jordan era run and gun style of play since it was more fun to watch
I’ve heard something similar in regard to the post game when The Warriors made shooting 3’s valuable. That the post game is just ineffective and a ball stopper for most offenses because everyone is just standing and watching the big guy battle for 2.
It’s hypocritical in one aspect, because that’s literally what James Harden’s game was in Houston. He played constant 1v1’s with shooters just standing around him and he was praised. Even other teams started copying that.
When I see this footage they look too lanky to me. I’m shorter but very strong and I’d just bully them out of the only space they are effective in.

I’m going to touch more of the mere fact that the rules were called way differently back then compared to today. I’ve already been through the comments firing back at bad/good takes of “These eras sucked” or “Nothings changed” or even of an 81 year old sharing his first hand experience so I will conclude that it’s almost too hard to compare Wilt and Russel on surface level aspects because they seemingly had different goals.
I do want to touch on how they called fouls and violations though because it seems way different back then but like ACTUALLY AUTHENTIC to what I think Basketball is and everyone else. Yes you are gonna get super star calls but today i feel like its inflated to the max, and even with missed travel calls. What i am trying to say is the game needs 1 extra Ref to be properly observed. We are in a world where everyone wants to be involved too so whats the issue with an extra ref? It would crack down on horrible missed calls, bad calls but also just give a lot more awareness for a seemingly such a new and spontaneous game.
Back then it was TOTALLY way more simple and up pace and everything but its because there were way less elements to the game. Less moves invented, less possible shots or combos, strategies, even first hand experience and inspiration seemed to have moved slowly across the nation. So to that point of it being completely expanded, why not add an extra brian to interpret and understand it all as it happens live.

Wilt's moves were so clean and efficient
This is basketball imo. LIke watching a chess match between two titans. Like a war of attrition. Now you don't see the same defense being played or the same will to win the game. It's more about who can score the most points which it's always been but the Celtics would not only outscore opponents but create enough havoc to keep their opponents score lower. These players were still great athletes. Even if you look at olympic records players have gotten a split second faster or can jump higher but world class athletes have always been on another plateue. As far as the event too. These players were tough as nails as far as their mindsets some of them. Whether it was the old working class or the military or slavery. You had people who were conditioned differently. The game is more spread out now. Built from the inside out. It's now more designed to promote more scoring. Players are seen as more skilled but even that is debateable imo. I willl say the talent level now is as good as its been in a long time. There has been an influx of a lot of young talent the last decade or so. How the game is played is literally backwards though but getting back to it in ways. From a purest form, The 60's was basketball at it's purest imo. The 80's was really the golden age and probably the best combination of talent and quality of play. The 90's was predicated on interior scoring and was the Michael Jordan era and predicated on the individual. the 21st century has been a mess imo and they completely removed the interior portion of the game. It's not even about basketball sometimes its about something else entirely and $$$$ and marketing.

Its always interesting seeing how many commenters believe time travel is possible, and they could "drop in" a modern player back then. Any "modern player" born in 1930 would receive the same poor coaching, primitive medical care, zero nutrition, and horrible shoes, and would not be "modern" at all. This is why it’s important for people to actually WATCH Russell play. People look at stat sheets and just assume wilt just overly dominated russ. But watching showcases just how important russell was ok both ends for Boston. He wasn’t really looking to score. The things he did on offense don’t show up in the box scores. Screens, lots of dribble hand offs, hockey pass assist, outlets, saving the loose balls, bringing his man out the lane to find back door cuts, etc. very draymond green like responsibilities for the offense. And when he needed to, he could up his scoring. Oh and wilt is well… wilt. LOL

People always say how great the teams were but know an absolutely nothing about anyone on that teams besides hondo and cousy. How many people actually look into who Tom heinson or kc jones were and what their roles were? People know the name Sam Jones but don’t know what he brought to the table. Just saying they were great doesn’t suffice when half these people don’t know WHY they were great. That whole team was was offensive weapons yet the celts were the worst offensive team in basketball nearly that whole decade, yet they continued to dominate. Simultaneously they were by far the best defense in the game every single year with Russell being the focal point, as their entire scheme was to push everything other the middle and let Russell pick everything off, which led to fastbreaks for them all game long to which Russell initiated. Before Russell they were terrible on both ends even with cousy as an mvp. With Russel they were world beaters, after Russell, they IMMEDIATELY fell back into mediocrity on defense until cowens and hondo both developed into stars. They were not this 2018 golden state team people try to portray them as. Sure they were talented but they were not unbeatable. They just had the advantage of their being no free agency and they built a master system and had a whole decade to develop chemistry compared to everyone else. But the vast majority of their finals runs went the distance. Plus we can’t ignore that even when wilt got a ton of hof help on both Philly and La, he STILL was only able to beat Russell once. Why is that? He was at the peak of his powers between 65 and 69 with Hal Greer, Cunningham, etc, the Elgin, jerry, Goodrich, etc and only musters one victory against the Celtics before Russell retired? And there’s context to some of these things that weren’t entirely wilts fault, but some of those losses were winnable and wilt just didn’t perform. Call it what u will but to me that’s a flaw that Russell just did not possess. Wilt may have been the more dominant individual talent for sure. But imo in a 5v5 setting Russell was the superior talent. He made his guys better, he did his job to perfection, he came in with a strategy to win, and he got it done. The he had a better team logic would only work if the Celtics were blowing teams off the floor and wilt didn’t stand a chance. But they were going to game 6 and 7s with wilt, Pettit, and the lakers duo of Jerry and Elgin nearly every single year and Russell and company just simply knew how to close the deal while wilt just never did and often got worse in the big moments.

His father got his family out of the South. Then he looked after Bill properly well after his wife died while working a tough job. No wonder Bill has so much respect for him.

12:43 is genuinely great defense on that post-up. Stands his ground to prevent a bully move or spin, puts his hands up to defend the shot, and there was good help defense. That was just a great shot.

This is great. These are the trailblazers and get full respect. That being said, it's just so interesting to see how much the game has evolved with far superior spacing and ball movement. There is little offfball actions that the game looks stiff. Also, people were smoking INSIDE the building!

They're all so composed and respect each other as long as they don't cross the line (some body checking here and now but not many big fights and arguing). Couldn't stand the macho attitude brewing in the 80s, glad it's down a notch and bullying the referees is at least fun sometimes (like that time Rondo I believe grabbed that photographer's camera).

the arena is far
smaller and the
offense has the
ball to start each
play.
No matter how great
Ruth was he could
not have dominated
a baseball game the way
Wilt could dominate
a basketball game, so
they changed some
rules in basketball to
level the playing field
for Wilt's opponents.
Like Ruth, Wilt had great
skills but he was also
a one of a kind physical
human being and he
was almost unstoppable
at times. Even Russell was, routinely, outplayed
by Wilt almost all the
time.

My point in saying
WC is the Babe Ruth
of basketball is that,
like Ruth, he came along
and set records that
lasted a long time and
that no one could dis-
pute that he was the
Goat of his sport.
Ruth would have been
a HOF pitcher if he
had stayed on the
mound. He was very
gifted and I don't want
to hear that he played
against inferior comp-
etition in his day.
Cobb, Johnson, Gehrig,
etc. would have been
great in any era. God
gives that kind of talent
to people, rarely, and
it plays well whenever
it surfaces.
By the way- I was born in 1949 and saw both these guys throughout most of their careers...
I came along later, but enjoyed it and have the greatest respect for them. Saw Kareem, Gilmore and Walton and Moses. But Bill and Wilt are top of the (C) list.
