There were no investors who were ready to finance these companies.GM's debt at that time was $172 billion (more than twice its assets)compared to delta's $10 billion. Without govt intervention, these companies would cease to exist and there would have been thousands of job losses in auto and related industries.Romney supported bank bailouts but since Tea party started gaining ground in Q1 2009, he did what he always does. Actually, Obama "saves" the auto industry by putting them through a structured bankruptcy...which is exactly what Romney said should be done. Bankruptcy doesn't mean death to a company, it is an act of mercy to given them a chance to get back on their feet.
What a legendary speech.
It's wonderful that the municipality of Detroit is finally able to shed some of its debt commitments just as multinational corporations have been able to do for decades. When you finally realize that the city of Detroit is not the same financial entity as the automobile industry, you'll understand this is a good thing.
I am sure glad that SHE is on our team. Jennifer Granholm is one that the president can use in his his term. I feel sorry for those Republicans bigots. No I don't! There time is up. The world has no room for such bigots.
I served my country for almost six years in the uniform of the U.S. Army! Did any of somebody's five sons put on a uniform? If Mitt wants to increase the military, then his kids should sign up.
This lady is awesome! I was so amazed at her passionate delivery. And so very proud for her. I'm just wondering how and why she is the "ex" governor of Michigan. That state I'm sure, really misses her now.

Accordingly, GM has 74,500 jobs in the USA & 122,500 abroad... Almost 2/3 of GM's jobs are in other countries. GM's outsourcing is not a slip. GM clearly states that foreign investment and outsourcing of jobs are an integral parts of its growth strategy." Jennifer should have used a different talking point.

I liked her speech. She was kooky, but she has a lot of energy. And she's right.
First of all... it wasn't a bailout. It was a loan that has since been repaid. Secondly, Whirlpool's success isn't dependent upon bank financing. I haven't come across a $50,000 washer/dryer set recently. The de-regulatory policies of GW Bush caused this environment where virtually no one was loaning money and THAT is what crippled the auto industry and NOT the unions. Please get your facts straight. De-regulation caused the crisis. The banks stopped financing & the auto/housing market crashed.
She serves two terms. That is all you can serve in Michigan.

Didn't you hear about General Motors paying the government back? I'd say that's a success. But if you're talking about the bailout of the financial industries, then I'd agree with you. See, things are not as simple as you would like them to be. Do you know any auto workers? People who were called back to work? I think they would disagree with you.

The big corporations pay no taxes, and that's hurting the system WAY MORE than a few welfare cases are. It would make more sense for you to redirect your anger toward the top 1% that pay no taxes yet make record profits from NOT giving people jobs. no I'm not exaggerating...I was short by 5,000 plus dollars since we escrow, living in Ann Arbor was expensive, not going in what we paid on taxes since I feel it's not your business or anyone else... our mortgage company was willing to help out with giving us a loan without interest which I paid along with our monthly payments for close to two years.. Can you imagine someone who was out of job, trying to keep their home and had this happen? That 350... was probably folks in the boonies...

That sounds good but that's simply not the reality. People have certain needs. You cannot come into church talking about how the highways need fixing. Certain things work for certain people and don't work for others. It's unrealistic to take a one-size-fits-all approach and then say to the ones who are left out: "Oh well. Everybody else is happy, why can't you be?" {{-_-}}
