    The big cam III has been my favorite engine from the time I was little. I have always dreamed of finding a TT. I have never seen one and I've been laughed at and told Cummins never made one.

      That is what my father had in his ford 9000, 13 over . I learned to drive that truck when I was 16, and drove it for many years, too many . 😂

      I loved the BC3 400 I ran, smooth power and torque from 1500rpm up. It was mated to a 15spd, a 13spd would have been perfect and kept it in its peak power rpm.
      Would easily keep up with Cats of the dame horsepower, pass a few as well.

    My fire department just retired our 1973/74 Howe International Ladder truck with a Small cam 855 NTF365 that I bumped up to 400 horsepower because the truck was slow but ran great. I love the 855 Cummins

      Interesting you should mention that engine. I grew up in a family owned Heavy Construction & Rigging Business and 1 of his cranes a
      TM-800 [80 Ton]Grove Hyd Crane
      That had this same engine in the carrier, NTC-[F] 365..

      @@Darth-Nihilus1 Yes, this was a 1973? Model Crane still had the Compression Release on the Engine. The [ F] designation allowed the Governed Rpms to turn to 2500..

      @@smckinney3mckinney141 ours didn’t have the release on it to start, it turned over fast and fired up smoothly. They also blew up the engine in the 1990’s from rebar on a bridge kicking up and going through the oil pan

    I had one in a 78 peterbuilt 359 ,cummins told to call Mr Bruce, he was quite helpfull

    Good to see you again Brian!
    I so enjoyed the timing and comments on the N14 video and I so enjoyed this even though I can't remember the name of the engine cuz I had too many letters.
    I guess I'm thrown out of school because mechanical engine scare me; not that I want the most recent ones with more sensors and wiring than they have steel but I'll take my 1999 N14 Celect Plus and let the electric computer figure things out.

    they used to have an air tank mounted to the engine. that was a pert of the system that held air for start up while truck air system built up gee. that has been a few years ago

    Saludos Mr brian, le quiero hacer unas preguntas y espero me pueda ayudar.
    Hay una leva (camshaft) para el motor (ntc855 c450) #(3801030 ó 3021589) para tiempo fijo que tiene un recorrido mayor para el injector (0,266")?
    La pregunta! esa si la leva tiene mayor recorrido en las válvulas de escape y admisión? O solo es para el inyector.
    Quiero elevar un (big cam iii 400) a 450hp) con un solo turbo ht60 híbrido (80/110mm) compresor.

    Love those old 855 big cams! My brother and i Had the opportunity to do an inframe on one.. Im curious as to how it will dyno within safe operation? And a question as to why you couldn't eliminate the after cooler and run it with an air to air... The intake manifold off an N14 will fit right on the big cam... The early N14 were mechanical also...

    I driven a freightliner FLD 120 with a Cummins N14 had a crappy turbo definitely needs this twin turbo can't find any trucks with nice twin setup or compound such a shame

      So why not replace the turbo? Tons of good single turbo setups for the n14

      Be careful what you wish for. The hint is this was not the answer to Cummins stepping stone to electronic fuel management. Short lived availability is the clue.

      Spot on, the BC3 400 single turbo I ran would keep up with Cats of the same horsepower, pass a few also.
      Twin turbo....that would have been fun.

    Brian, is this the same version of the old 475 Hp Cummins with turbochargers
    run in series? I remember the problems they had with the MVT timing.

    Saludos a está comunidad de gente que les gustan los Cummins. Les tengo un par de preguntas?
    El camshaft del 475 es (3801038 ó 3021589), lo podré instalar en Big cam iii que es ntc400?. Ya se que ese árbol de leva tiene más recorrido en el inyector y es mvt. Lo quiero usar en tiempo fijo?
    Elevar mi NTC 400 a un NTC 450 pero sin modificar más nada o debo hacer algo más?
    Al turbo bht3 le voy a cambiar la rueda compresora de 73.4 /109mm por un compresor 80/110mm . Creen que logré los 450 HP con esas sencillas modificaciones? Le agradezco algún asesoramiento adicional.

      Tengo un nt444xt con casi esa potencia el cpl es 1280 revisa esos parámetros según entiendo solo seria cambiar el árbol de levas y configurar la bomba lo demás es muy similar al 400

      I'm not a professional by any means but I believe you have to build the engine to a different cpl number and change or add parts as required to handle the new horsepower such as an after cooler if it doesn't have one. Call a true cummins shop and they should be able to tell you what you need. The one in ocala fl was able to help me out

    That's a factory set up? I don't think I've ever seen something like that...twin turbos on a mechanical diesel engine. Am I correct on the mechanical part? I think I am lol. What is the reasoning behind the variable timing and what was the intended application for this particular engine? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Cool vid👍

      That is factory set up on old cummins,but came out on earlier big cams as far as i know.it was just part of the beginings of playing with timming to meet emissions for those times.later on cummins brought out variable timming in the injector itself called stc,stepped timming control.from there they went electronic to celect product.

    damn the way that it works with FUEL pressure and air system is fkin cool...the only knowledge i really have is how the timing works with the 1.4T multiair from chrysler..which is controlled with oil pressure

    Is the twin turbo a Cummins factory installation or an aftermarket install?
    I worked at Cummins for 26 years and never saw a twin turbo big cam Cummins.

      I was employed by Cummins Engine Co.
      for 26 years in Central Calif.

      I was with factory from 1970-78, then with Chicago distributor until 2001. NTC-475 was not a popular engine, probably did'nt make very many and may not have been CARB certified.@@medrep1000

      fixed timing. so when cold the injector is firing at wrong time for smoke free

    Great video Cummins was late to the variable timing party Mack accomplished the same thing with a simple Bosch pump in 1966
