    I am a new hunter in Colorado with a mountaineering background. Going for elk with my bow for the first time. I bought the Teton rain jacket and the camo T shirt, both in verde 2.0. All my other gear will be what I already own for when I climb. I love my Prana Zion pant, and TNF down belay jacket. I will hash tag Kuiu on Instagram and probably add a little review at some point after my trip. I am already impressed about the weight and fit of the Teton rain jacket, I really hope this is quality mountain gear.

    I’m very impressed with your brand. I’m a solo hunter/ fisherman moving to Alaska from Missouri and Louisiana. I usually build my bags and gear, but finding you is like seeing what I build for myself. Plus you have better fabric than what I can find. I would like to see more military patters in your gear and clothing line. Multicam pattern colors, ie Alpine, Tropical, Black and Arid. A few new one’s no ones talking about is the Oceans blue and Waters Edge. When I’m hunting, I don’t want to seen, heard and even smelled by man or animal. I would like to see scent control not only in what I wear but what I sleep and camp in. I would like to see 4 season, 2 4 6 man blackout tents with a scent control and light disciple built into the fabric with maybe Gor-Tex with all Multicam patters. There is so much more that I would like to share, but I don’t want to give away stuff on a open form.

  • @HuntingCreed
    @HuntingCreed Před 7 lety

    Hi again.
    Yes, I'm counting everything I haul. My food needs are .6kg/day for a mountain hunt compared to your .9kg/day.
    I imagine we're hunting similar conditions because alpine Tahr habitat in NZ experiences the same treacherous varied conditions (NZ's changeable mountain weather is notorious worldwide along with it's extreme hunting. Having been in alpine BC you would get colder situations at times though.)
    Base weight for me is 5kg and much of your gear shown is similar to what we'd carry ie. NeoAir, light down bags. Key systems where we'd save weight is in using Dyneema packs (for example the Hyperlight Mountain Gear equivalent to the 60L bag you show is nearly a kilo lighter and my cuben tarp for 2 people with room for cooking weighs in at 340grams)
    I'd also save grams for example by using more thin layers instead of thicker mid-layers.
    I really do appreciate what you and Kuiu gear are doing because for too long hunting gear has been overweight. Keep it up . . . and the process for me has also involved rationalising and getting more efficient . . . but rather than go through individual items/choices we could more freely communicate if you made contact to my email: nzhuntingadventures@gmail.com
    Note: I am not an outfitter and not selling any gear. Am just an avid alpine hunter. Come on down to NZ, hunt some public land . . . walk in and out.
    Cheers

    • @kuiuultralight
      @kuiuultralight  Před 7 lety

      Nice breakdown, thanks for sharing this! I'll add this isn't Jason writing, it's Blaise from the video team (Jason is in BC as we speak), but I'll be passing along to him. HMG packs are definitely light; we designed ours with a balance of weight and load-bearing capacity for hauling meat. Selfishly, I'll try to get Jason to come hunt with you so I can come along to shoot New Zealand scenery :)

    • @HuntingCreed
      @HuntingCreed Před 7 lety

      :-) yup the scenery is pretty good, and seems moreso if you've had to lug camera gear!! Love your work.
      On the other note, I'm a meathunter, not a trophy hunter, so I do lug meat in my Dyneema pack system. Sure it hurts, but after 40+years of hauling meat in framed packs or more recent harness systems I've had to learn that 'deadweight' is hard work, no matter what system is being used aye (Sure makes it taste better tho)
      Like Kuiu for the other key parts of the hunt I want to be nimble & efficient and set up for hunting with all my gear on my back.
      See ya'll when you come 'downunder'.

    Awesome vid! Love the passion behind your company. I recently purchased your guide pants and guide jacket with a merino 210 zip for a November Montana region 7 deer hunt. After watching this video im thinking I should have went with one of your lighter lines?

    • @kuiuultralight
      @kuiuultralight  Před 7 lety

      Hi Casey, it really depends on your hunting style. If you're on the move constantly, the Guide pants can sometimes get a little warm in milder conditions. But if you're doing more still hunting, or if you expect the conditions to be really cold, then the Guide pants can be great for that. Give our customer service reps a call at 855-367-5848 and they can help you put a system together--it's easier for them to do on the phone, since they can ask you for more information on your hunting style.

  • @HuntingCreed
    @HuntingCreed Před 7 lety

    Cheers for putting up the vid.
    That's still a lot of weight when you quote 40pounds for a shorter 10 day trip, and that's still excluding your optics & rifle! Perhaps the term 'ultralight' is incorrectly used here as the general outdoor pursuits definition considers much less base weight and 'skin-out' weight.
    By way of comparison for your sheep hunting in BC at similar altitudes (depending on seasonal range) truer ltralight alpine Tahr hunters in NZ would go quite a bit lighter, including optics.
    KUIU gear is gaining some traction down here in NZ and rightfully so - well done. However, there are lighter more robust options that suit hunters IMHO

    • @kuiuultralight
      @kuiuultralight  Před 7 lety

      Hi +HuntingCreed, thanks for the feedback! Most of that 40 pound weight is food; are you counting that in your totals? Having not hunted Tahr, I don't know what the variability of the weather conditions are, but in BC, it's very treacherous--you have to be prepared for an incredibly wide range of temperatures and conditions. Curious to know what gear you're finding to be both lighter and more robust?

      That's why we're coming out with the Super Down Pro, which will have double the fill. The Super Down (which is becoming the Super Down Ultra) is intended as a packable down piece, so the fill is less heavy than the Pro, which will be exponentially warmer but less packable.
