5 Best Apps to Max Out Your Credit Card Cash Back

  • I tried 5 of the highest rated cash back apps to see which one works best. The main use case is that you have a set of credit cards personal to you and you want to find out which credit card to use to yield the most cash back without doing mental acrobatics every time you buy something. Some have sign up bonuses, some have double rewards the first year, some have limited time cash back offers. With all these factors, it can get pretty complicated very quickly. That's what your phone is for, it can do these calculations for you and let you think about more important things.
    Award Wallet - This is a good start. It can recommend new cards for you but I cant help but think they are only making this apps so you can sign up to a whole bunch of cards with them earning them lots of referrals. It tends to show you every card there is under the tree and not tailored specifically to your wallet.
    Card Pointers - This app allows A LOT of customizations with each card including modifying the rewards percentage and the value of each point to you. This is HUGE because everybody gets different offers and you can customize it to your situation. It even allows these modifications to be on a time limit so it changes the recommendation when the limited time offers are up. The only draw back is the GPS location specific recommendations which personally isn't a deal breaker as picking the right card is the meat of the situation here. You could possibly combine this with MaxRewards to use their location data of a business to find out the category of spending first if you are unsure.
    MaxRewards - This doesn't integrate sign up bonuses into the recommendation of which card to use. Many does not have a sign up bonus credit card active so this might be ok for some. This app doesn't have some of the grandfathered credit cards like Sears Platinum Mastercard or Chase Ink Business. Not having a grandfathered card is only bad if you cant add in your own card which this app does not allow. It allows the addition of GPS location so you can look up where you are buying stuff and it'll find the best card to use in your wallet. Best thing is, it even have the Target card but you pretty much only use the Target card at Target anyway. If this app has all your cards, this would be the app to go with.
    Birch - This app requires linking of your bank without giving you any incentives or really good information first. I added my information anyway and found that the card it allows you to link is very limited. Limited card and not customization options makes this app dead in the water.
    Maxivu - This has a lot of support for grandfathered cards but it wasn't accurate in the cash back options I really do get. The cards changes depend on when you got the card so not having customization options for each card makes this app useless. It can also recommend a card to use with GPS location data but you need to have the core working well first before adding the bells and whistles.

      I don't think there is something that specific. It sounds more like a credit report minus the rewards points.

  • @chia_LL
    @chia_LL Před 3 lety +4

    most apps will fail to track credit card reward bonus because
    1. they dont have all the cards on the market
    2. they dont have all the target bonus offers
    make your own google spread sheet or google keep notes , you can read them offline on the phone / computer .

      @emcro Před 3 lety +1

      The only problem with that approach is keeping up to date with the ever-changing offers - with all of the temporary Covid benefits for example, it was nearly a full-time job for me to keep things up to date with CardPointers. One of the benefits of having so many users using the app now is that if there was anything I missed, users are quick to “Report a Problem” and let me know about any special offers, temporary statement credits, etc, then I verify them and add them to the app to help all of the other users. Working collectively helps cover ~every change available and makes life easier for you. Give it a shot, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Missing card reports in CardPointers are very rare these days as I now have over 3,000 cards in the database, but I love a good challenge if you have some that I don’t yet, please do let me know :)

      @@emcro the fact is : target bonus offers usually are the most profitable offers . Apps wont work for people who prefers to maximize the reward value.

    • @emcro
      @emcro Před 3 lety

      @@chia_LL If you are referring to targeted bonus offers based on spending that’s one of the big features of the 2.0 release - any offer I hear about I add to the app as one a user can choose from, and a user can put in a fully one-off offer as well as a Custom plan. If you’re happier doing the extra work yourself then by all means, but there is a better way to help you maximize your cards as I hear time and time again from users.

      Give it a try. I fully understand the inertia needed to try a new app. But heck, I tried 5 of them just to come down to this one. For years, I was using a paper cheat sheet I had to update every quarter. Nothing to lose, you can always delete the app and you never gave your login info from any bank.

    I only have 2 credit cards and only use one of them. I always thought that cash back or discount offers was a lure to get me to spend more on things I probably wouldn't have bought if they weren't pointed out to me. I always mindlessly deposit the cash back back into the card's balance and never considered juggling cards to get more money back.

      Never get a statement credit at least on Citi Double because this reduces the amount you pay and reduces your rewards.

      The problem here is that a 'real' date automatically becomes fake when recorded. Neither party will know if the date was sincere or was it just for views.
