  • When does our real life become indistinguishable from our digital one? Is there a line between who we are, what we are, on social media versus who we are in reality? Is there still a distinction between the two? Jake Roper hosts, produces and writes Vsauce3 - a science CZcams channel with over 3.3 million subscribers, where he shares his excitement for the real-life science behind gaming, movies, comics, and more via ultra-cinematic explorations. To truly blend those worlds, Jake has been known to enlist the help of guests such as Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse Tyson, The Muppets, Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Steve Martin and Rihanna. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      Nah, I have been to couple of Vienna's TEDx talks and they are usually quiet. I think that it is caused by the culture. Austrians are learned not to interupt anybody, so they don't. Just a culture :)

      @NTDang Před 6 lety +15

      i think it is also the environment. It is a very formal environment and it is harder to really 'react' when everyone else is formal and quiet. You don't really want to be that One Guy.

      The mic didn't pick up anything from the audience, it's only streaming audio from Jake's stage mic
      So it's not necessarily that there's no audience reaction, it's that we can't hear them if they did. Anyway, you can see some of them smiling and laughing in the B-roll cutaways.

      Pretty sure nobody laughed because Jake didn't expressly tell them to laugh; comedians, for instance, laugh a little bit during/after a joke, to signal to the audience that the joke was funny.
      Jake only did that at the end, after everybody decided this wasn't worth laughing over and that he's a serious boi

    @JakeRoper, I’ve been watching your videos for years (through cancer & FactSurgery) - and this video just reaffirmed my opinion that you are AWESOME.
    You’re an artist and science/pop geek at the same time. You’re self-presentation is unbelievably non-typical male, and your expression feels deeply authentic - which is so rare in this medium and others. And you truly question everything when other content providers simply drone on to give people what they want.
    And here, with one of the most difficult audiences I have ever seen, you communicate a message which is the most relevant in our changing world of social media. I wish more people could see this and understand how deeply it affects us all.
    Thank you @Jake , for just being you!

    this talk made me think about plato and his theory about forms, that there is an ideal version of a thing - the perfect version. Its that us, as persons, have different versions but can become collectively called as such. "persons". in which we all have different personalities, but not really, its more of a "thing" than a personality. Learned something from today

  • @foreverspellman
    @foreverspellman Před 6 lety

    I think his point here was primarily that the online representation of yourself is a part of you that you share online, because of validation or other reasons. You make "you" a company that other people see, and you want those that visit your "store" to enjoy themselves. If people don't like something, you "stop selling" it, the shallow reason is to "give them what they want", even though it may affect you in such a way you start to distance your true self from the company of "you". You end up becoming a character, one you really like (because it's nice to be liked) and one you don't let go of because it's nice to feel a sense of purpose when you might not really know.
    I think here, in a sense, the idea is "all these social outlets are different and hold different pieces of me... I hope that I can encapsulate myself online in a way that becomes meaningful when you take these different pieces and bring them together, so that you might know the things I like the most about me, or who I am".
    Another great point is that I (personally) think that there are too many people that can't differentiate their "business" and their "personal" self online. I can see the difficulty in basically operating a "business" like being a CZcamsr, while still trying to be honest with who you are and how you represent the company of "You". "I don't like myself very much" also says "I don't like myself but I'm attracted to the validation I get when I share a part of me online".
    Just trying to make sense of things, and share my thoughts on this. I have followed Jake since before he got cancer, and love his videos.

    I thought the slides were quite clever. Together with his physical presentation, they were a practical representation of his idea of him "self". Each slide was sparse, containing a little "content", that Jake wanted the audience to see. Accompanying each slide were notes, containing much more "content", that Jake did not want the audience to see. Similarly, the version of Jake represented on stage is a version of him "self" that he wants the audience/viewers to see.
    It raises the question: does anyone ever see the real "self"? Or only a version of the self that you are comfortable sharing with people [in any given situation]? Which version of you is you?
    I don't know if Jake Roper intended any of the above. I'm probably just reading too much into it.
    I'm gonna go have an existential crisis now.

    But I guess it’s important.
    Still with everything else stripped out they always look sad and scared, and I worry about whether what they do makes them truly happy or not.
    Jake’s a good kid, I like the him I see on here. I can say the same about Tristin, Jack, and Tim (the latter 2 whom I’m friends with on Facebook).

    I'm sad to learn that Fact Surgery didn't do well. I really enjoyed those, but I did forget about them until he brought them back up. Maybe he will do a throw back to them someday in the future.

    They should have invited some of his CZcams subscribers to be in the audience. But I did watch Michael's talk in Vienna and his audience was much better

    The meaning and central premise of the talk slowly slipped away because of the extreme lack of interaction and reaction from the audience. The silence is certainly deafening.

    Yeap, maybe that was not the best audience because they don't know the social media Jake. But I know some of the social media Jake and I love him. And I laughed at the jakes.
