I'm Chinese American I I thank my parents for being too cheap to pay for cable because it made me watch channels like PBS where they're not afraid to tackle Black History Month. This was in the 1990s, I watched Reading Rainbow and Wishbone who had great episodes about slavery, segregation, and civil rights. And I learned all this in elementary. I think children learning about Black History, learning about slavery and civil rights makes them more empathetic to their fellow American.

Reading Rainbow and Wishbone were a smidge after my time (just a tad too old for Reading Rainbow when it started, Wishbone was a decade later), though thankfully both were a part of my children's early education; I at least got to enjoy The Electric Company at the proper age.

I’m white. My trouble with that phrase is it separates Black …as if there is American History with Black as a subset. I need to tell myself “Without Black Americans…there is no American History.”…I need this reframing in my brain.
I try to remember to think “Enslaved Americans”. …Not “Blacks” or “the Slaves”
My mental image of America is white,
so I need to reframe that…the boards are warped though.
It’s impossible to imagine the lost opportunities …the friendships we didn’t have,
the talent we didn’t develop, the neighbors we didn’t know… (Who are ‘we’?)
I am less for these loses, in awkward foggy ways that I don’t know, I don’t know.
The soul of America..is it not black? What does that mean…I don’t know?
Does it not Lift Every Voice? What does that mean…I don’t know.

I brought all my books into my classroom for the students to checkout as each was given an assignment to read and write a summary of the book they read due before March 1.
The exam was constructed from my lectures. All students were offered note taking lessons as well and were permitted to use their notes during the exam.

I hope today's students in both K-12 and colleges can summon the energy necessary to counter these attempts by politicians across the country to give them only a dumbed-down, narrow-minded and white-washed education which will ill prepare them to become the empathetic and compassionate citizens this country needs. In the words of Mario Savio when speaking about the Machine, "......You've got to put your bodies upon the gears, and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop". My son lives in Tuscaloosa and teaches history at the university. I taught English in college. We had a long back and forth about DeSantis decision because I was infuriated at the seeming lack of response from history teachers. He sent me two responses from history teachers across the country signed by hundreds of teachers
What he said was, “People are responding but you just don’t hear about it.” He also said that the College Board was itself a bit of a racket because the courses aren’t actually taught in college when students get there. What bothers me the most is the seeming agreement or passive acceptance of this kind of overt shutting off of speech and reading and intellectual inquiry in the name of “protecting our children.” This is the same argument used by all authoritarians in history. White Americans think they are protecting their what? Children? Their social inheritance? Their specialness? Meanwhile, people like DeSantis are using them and ripping off their kids’ education, making sure their children will even more racist and dumber than their parents. What a legacy! You cannot make your children better educated by hiding from reality and history. You only guarantee that they will be victims of those who know how to manipulate their fears.

I just watched an HBO docuseries on HULU called "Agents of Chaos". I hope all who have not seen it are able to track it down there or elsewhere. Yes the title sounds more than a little flamboyant, but it may be one of the most fact based, understandable stories I have digested about what has happened in bulk of the last decade to America. Mind you, it has only a very little to do with this specific topic, but it effects it, and it has left me, for much of the week, almost frozen, emotionally, in this deep concern about how much we actually don't hear about. Now, we may not being hearing about it because resistance to this ban on history you are talking about is simply in a mounting stage, not an action based one. I grant that. But, should you decide to watch it, you will understand why it immediately sprung to mind when I read that sentence. I firmly believe that the revelations in it need to be discussed because we are not very well informed. Even those of us who are avid news watchers are not very well informed. Not in any way that creates a timeline of recent history in our minds and an understanding of just what we are ALL experiencing now. I repeat, it will disturb you and there are no clear solutions that it poses. But it speaks a truth I simply hadn't realized mattered until I sat down and took the time. Thank you for your comment. I agree whole heartedly.

One thing that I wish someone would research is the effect of desegregation on students. I was a product of this program and it helped me understand and learn about the effects of racism and learn how we are all just people. Desegregation was an important part of my education and WHY isn't it ever discussed? You come to know people and you realize that they have the same hopes, dreams, loves, and abilities as you do. THAT breaks down barriers. THAT is what heals. I have such deep respect for Black Americans because despite all the pain, cruelty and injustice they have suffered, they still believe in the American ideals and promise of a brighter future. THAT is what a REAL American is all about. We recognize that evil exists, racism exists, and we roll up our sleeves and fight shoulder to shoulder for a better world. CAN DO, America. Get to work.

Also loved the remarks by Christina. When I was growing up in Australia 70s and 80s, the history of what happened between our first nations peoples and the settlers (mainly white Europeans who actually attempted genocide in my reading) was papered over in school history teaching. As a result, we kids saw the indigenous black people who, by the way have been here for more than 60,000 years, as others and outside of normal society.
As a result of decades of effort and good will on all sides, this history has been firmly acknowledged, accounted for and indigenous culture and people are now celebrated here.
    So it can be done.
