  • Join us as we explore the villages of Lynton and Lynmouth on the North Devon coast in Exmoor National Park. Lynton is on the top of the cliff and Lynmouth is 500 feet below at sea level.
The two are connected a water-powered Cliff Railway which dates from1890. It is the world’s highest & steepest fully water-powered funicular railway.
On a clear day, we can see Lynton across the Bristol Channel as it is only 17.5 miles from Porthcawl in South Wales to the North Devon coast. However, for us to get there we have to drive over the Severn Bridge and down past Minehead.
Picturesque Lynmouth has rows of old fishing cottages and shops which cluster around the pretty harbour. Lynton at the top of the cliff is a vibrant Victorian village which retains its quaintness.
The surrounding area of Exmoor National Park is a great place to hike, it has a network of footpaths and it is home to a vast array of wildlife.
Tragically, in August 1952 the Lynmouth flood disaster occurred. After heavy rain on Exmoor, the floodwaters cascaded of the moor and a wave of water and debris rushed down the West Lyn Valley flooding the town and killing 34 people.

This is such a beautiful place. Been there twice, and wandering beside the sea, maybe having a picknick there, is magic. I remember a warm sunny day in july, we had sat down above the shore West of the town, and a thunder rose from the sea; a few second later 2 F-15's fighter jets flew in tandem, no more than maybe 20-25 meters above ground and did a sharp rise over the hillside.
    Small things you never forget.

Me too! I used to date a guy from Lynton, and often spent my childhood days kicking around there - I still come back, as my family still live here, it really has not changed that much in 50 old years -

Thanks, we had the sun for one of our very few trips away last year. We live directly opposite and can see Lynton very clearly in fine weather.

We visited again this year, we stayed in a large motorhome right in the main car park for 3 days. It took us 4.5 hours to get there though ☹️ The mountain railway is great, and at 7:30 the guy with the brown paper covered parcel, has obviously bought in Maurice Bishop’s gallery a must visit place where we bought some more pieces off him. Minehead not far away has steam trains that came from Dai Woodhams yard in Barry, just a nice touch when visiting there.

It is a pretty little place but it does take a drive to get there. We hope to go back this summer.

I've just been watching your vlog on Lynton and Lynmouth it looks beautiful. Me and my hubby are visiting in August 2023. He has the onset of early dementia at 67, his passion is Steam Railways, so we've booked a steam train ride from Minehead. My question I would like to ask is that we are both disabled, I can walk with a Stick, but my hubby has a small mobility scooter. How is the area for accessibility? We are staying in a hotel called Valley of the rocks, in Lynton, I am driving from Cheshire, so I have got the car to get around, but it's just the local area for getting around. Thank you.

      @flydriveexplore  Před rokem

A car is needed to get around and the Cliff railway from Lynton down to Lynmouth is not suitable for mobility scooters. Although, once down in Lynmouth it is flat. Lynton itself is on a hill but the hotel you are staying in is in the centre of the small town by the church. As we are not disabled ourselves it's hard to say what parts are accessible but this may help visitlyntonandlynmouth.com/accessible-lynton-lynmouth/

Once upon a long long time ago there was a ferry service from Porthcawl. My father and I crossed to Ilfracombe and back and he told me about the flood disaster as we passed Lynmouth.
We had a lovely storm on the return trip. Nearly didn't land at Porthcawl.

@@OnASeasideMission I remember the ferry! I worked with someone who brought their TV back from Wales to Woolacombe before the ferry closed!

@@KarenCoach Think it was 'White Funnel '.
We had a nice time getting to Ilfracombe...
And one crazy time coming back through a storm that rocked the ship until I was nearly sick and hit us with one wave that nearly wrecked the saloon, even knocked the till off the counter.
Fortunately, we tied up in Porthcawl in the small hours, and I was let off school the next day.
      Happy times.
