Well, classic Dragonball hat a way better quality and more time to evolve their characters and fights..in compare to this little tournament here tbh.
It's just a shame Jackie Chun disappears and never makes a return. I always wanted to see him vs Master Roshi.

IMO Videl is shocked because they're kids and she never saw Gohan or Goten in a serious fight. I think that's why Videl kept saying "these are kids?!" Let's not forget Videl is still "kind of" in light denial and finds all of the z fighters strange lol. I think that's why she kept repeating "omg they're kids" She's more blown away with the fact that children are fighting that way and Videl has never seen fighting that fast and powerful. She's also never seen Gohan even go super saiyan. Let's not forget that Gohan also hid the real training from Videl. Gohan and Goten's real training was private after Videl's flying lessons were over.
This and to add to the "light denial" is the fact that she holds her dad super highly, to the same extent as the rest of the general public, and to the point where she considers herself still chasing to reach his level and doesn't think Gohan is a match for Mr. Satan either despite knowing first-hand Gohan's superheroics. All this when she already is stronger than Mr. Satan by Gohan's estimation even before her ki control and flight training.
Essentially, she can't grasp that even the kids are capable of fighting like this because she knows it far eclipses her dad's capabilities (or any normal human's, despite knowing how to fly and about ki), and her dad is the pinnacle. So anything like this and the more we see is very much a shock of her trying to parse things mentally. lol

Those short-range teleportations are not really that and more just them moving really fast. It's also possible that they are using After-Image techniques which get introduced in OG Dragon Ball but then never really get mentioned again and rather incorporated in basic fighting choreography. Basically what is happening is that they move really fast and use their energy to project an image of themselves on their previous location.
After image is actually moving fast enough to be invisible and then slow down and speed up in the middle to leave a after effect of you being visible.

Yeah the first time I watched the show when I was really young i thought everyone was teleporting when they’d do that and I got confused how Goku’s teleportation trick was different from what everyone else was doing (minus the part about being able to teleport anywhere). It took rewatches for me to finally understand it was a way of showing super speed
It's impressive how Goten is damn near equal to Trunks in strength considering Trunks trained with Vegeta in the gravity room and Goten trained with ChiChi for the majority of his training.

Goten has Goku's attitude, which seems to be genetic since he didn't even know his father for the first few years of his life. Trunks on the other hand has had Vegeta as his taskmaster. Vegeta's focus on training has always been about endurance and raw strength, while Goku and Goten seem more concerned with techniques and the art of fighting itself.

@@TheMaxCloud Not even that. It's more how they were raised. As we see through the show, "aliens" or those from other planets have a natural grasp on ki and their cultures either use it spiritually or for physical power. Earthlings don't have this, so their strongest warriors use intense martial arts to unlock their hidden potential. Goku never really needed martial arts, but Gohan taught him it anyway because he didn't know Goku was a gifted alien child. So Goku has this ki technique that other alien species don't really focus on.
I like the original line with Chi Chi when she knocks out the other mom. She says something like, "who do you think taught Goten?" Like yeah, he literally learned everything from Chi Chi

1. Goten was nervous because of the crowd. He is used to living with very few people.
2. Flying is poltry compared to the speee that they where fighting. Thier punches were making shockwaves.
3. Goten and Trunks are very skilled for thier age. Which makes sense since they have Space Sparatan genes.
4. They aren't teleporting. Only Goku can do that. They are just moving so fast that it look like they are teleporting.

I always took it as videl had never seen anyone move that fast. Especially while fighting. Which is why she was so shocked.
That's weird, considering Mr. Satan can also do a vanishing step. Though his vanishing step is pretty slow.

I think the one thing that you guys have to take into consideration, is that Videl's idea of strength, and power is vastly different from before she met Gohan and the other Z Fighters. She herself hasn't even realize that the moment she learned how to fly she started incorporating chi into all of her moves, which is best signified by how she completely destroyed a sandbag after pounding on it for hours with chi inforced attacks, something that a normal person would not have been able to do. Is to say that the moment she became conscious of it, she started to do it subconsciously, so she still has a very narrow view on how strong somebody can be once you throw the power of chi manipulation into the which many of the z fighters can do on a scale that she herself has never even imagined possible.

It actually makes sense to not go all out on your early opponents in a tournament unless you have to. That way, your later opponents won't know what you're fully capable of

This episode is great for a lot of the details you dont get when the story really hits. Between the stark contrast of kid Trunks being a mini-vegeta and Future Trunks being more like Bulma, Chichi getting to actually hit someone for a change, and the call backs to the old tournaments from Goku's childhood...it's a nice change of pace.

Goku’s Instant Transmission is the only real teleport in the show, the vanishing is just them being really fast
And yeah she’s never seen Goten fight. Hell she’s never really seen Gohan fight, just mess around with criminals. This is the first real dragonball fight she’s seen

This fight just isn't the same without Pikkon's Theme. Such an awesome track to use for these two little monsters fighting.
one thing i love about this episode is how well it showcases the difference between future trunks and kid trunks! where future trunks has always been a bit awkward and insecure and tries to fix everything himself, kid trunks is always confident and sometimes a bit cocky and immature. goes to show what happens when your mentor is gohan vs. your mentor being vegeta! although i honestly think it’s kinda sweet that having vegeta as a parent made trunks more confident - makes you wonder if vegeta’s actually been praising him a bit behind the scenes…. that’s character development!

Buu saga has a lot of cool moments, but everything regarding Buu itself is SOOO fucking boring. He's not entertaining enough to carry an entire arc on himself.
The thing is, Videl still thinks that she and her father are more powerful than all the Z fighters so she still looks surprised.

Videl saw him learn to fly and zip around quickly, but that could just mean he’s talented at flying, she doesn’t realize how difficult it is for people to learn to fly because she learned it very quickly too, although it was slower than Goten. She never saw him fight. So she never saw how fast he could move without flying, how hard he can hit, or how honed his technique is

Oh that’s not them teleporting, that’s just how fast they move. Instant Transmission (the technique Goku learned before returning to earth after Namek explosion) is a technique that he can teleport with, though it requires focus

Goten vs Trunks is such an underrated fight imo. It's one of my favorites, but I seldom hear it talked about among "favorite fight" discussions.
It's one of my favorites too but as you said it's really underrated. I sometimes even see people who say that this fight is filler.
Bulma was never a fighter, but Chi-Chi did make it to the Quarter Finals of the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament- where she lost to Goku. Until Videl, Chi-Chi was considered the World's Strongest Woman.
10:30 Nah they're not teleporting, they're just go from being still to moving wicked fast so it looks like they just disappeared. Its similar to the afterimage technique which we see Trunks use at 10:44 except its a normal part of battle

Video saw Goten fly and do an energy blast, but she never saw him fight before. Seeing how fast and powerful he is and how he can mix in flying masterfully at super fast speeds, she never saw any of that. Her understanding was that it was possible for her to learn how to fly (which she did learn) and do energy blasts (she didn’t learn but she did bring out the energy once when Gohan was teaching her about kei and how to fly). But she how crazy unreal dominant they are fighting….she assumed she could still beat Goten in a fight when she saw the blast and flying. But seeing his real power in action was different.

At this point Videl has no clue how strong the gang really are, These guys are so beyond "regular" martial artists that the normal folks can't really understand what's happening in front of them.
To put things in perspective, saiyan saga Goku and Piccolo vs Raditz were already way beyond Satan and Videl their power.
Now you have two kids who's power dwarf that many times over😂
Abridged makes a whole joke of the powerscaling and feats so it's harder to put things in perspective if you haven't seen the original show.
I think Goku / Krillen where already outpacing Mr. Satan during atleast during the Tien Shinhan arc, but knowing how much trouble Jackie Chun had putting Goku down, I would guess they already surpassed him halfway during their training with Master Roshi, although General Blue was a challenge, and I would like to think atleast Videl, but possibly also Mr. Satan, could outfight General Blue.

Gohan mentioned to Goten, Trunks, and Vegeta before they arrived to the tournament NOT to turn Super Saiyans during the tournament so that they don't get recognized from the fight with Cell 7 years ago which was shown on TV.
The same goes for Goku.
Remember, Videl's living under a fake idea of strength. She's been taught her whole life that ki is just a trick. On top of that, she still thinks her dad is the strongest guy in the world - and that's even having a glimpse of what Gohan can do.
Up to this point Videl has a weird blind spot where she still thinks her dad is the strongest fighter in the world. She just doesn't put 2 and 2 together that if Gohan can lift a 747 and her dad can't that Gohan is stronger than her dad. And it kind of makes a little bit of sense. He DID win the world martial arts tournament. She doesn't realize that he only won because he fought the one time none of the regular characters showed up for it. If you watch some of the old tournaments in original Dragonball, nobody makes it to the finals unless they're borderline superhuman at least, even without the actual super human characters.
Thus is a great video I'm sticking with it like glue :D

notably the Juniors division is new to this tournament, in the og Dragon Ball tournaments child Goku was fighting not only adults but monsters too even Krillin fought adults he fought a giant caveman guy whose special trick was his BO which didn't affect Krillin because no nose

But as a DB fan I wanted to shed some light on some things. I know you probably have someone guiding you through the series but I'd like to share what I think will be the best experience possible. Since I read that you will also watch OG Dragon Ball & Super.
After Kai I would recommend watching the OG Dragon Ball series instead of watching Super. Since it will be really odd to go from modern digital animation back to a series that was animated in the 80s. So watching Dragon Ball after you finish Kai will be better than watching Super. Besides it will be better to see how it all started before moving to Super. You'd really get to know these characters.
The OG series doesn't have a Kai version of it. Meaning the filler scenes are mixed in with the canon episodes. Even episode 1 is 1/3rd filler. aka non canon at all. Which ruins the pacing and makes the series less enjoyable and harder to watch. I would suggest watching a fan made edit called "Dragon Ball Recut" which removes (almost) all the filler in the original series. Making it go from 153 episodes to 82 episodes. aka it removes 71 episodes worth of filler. and this improves the quality of the series imo. Notice how almost half of the content is filler while only half is canon. It's genuinely more enjoyable when you watch only the canon content. "Dragon Ball Recut" is the closest thing to a Kai version of OG Dragon Ball that we have right now.

as for Super the first time it went viral was on episode 5. It went viral because the animation was bad. Sadly this was an issue with Super in the beginning and it took them a really long time to fix it. Because the improvement was happening gradually. The first 27 episodes of Super are a slow re-telling of 2 older films (Battle of Gods and Resurrection of F). Those 27 episodes are actually a worse version of those 2 older movies. Filled with filler, bad direction, bad animation, bad soundtrack choices, bad nostalgia bait, etc... . This is why I would recommend you watch those 2 movies and skip the first 27 episodes of Super. Start at episodes 28. Even at episode 28 and forward you will have some bad animation and soundtrack moments but you will also notice they're improving around here unlike the previous episodes.
That being said Super's production was redeemed since the series went viral again but for a good reason! In fact, an hour long special that was released during the last arc broke the internet. the servers of the most popular (& the official) anime streaming service (Crunchyroll) crashed when the episodes dropped due to too much terrific. I'm not even joking when I say people resorted to going to p0rn websites to watch the episodes (which got hundreds of thousands of views there). And tens of thousands of people gathered up in city centers and other places to watch the last few episodes of the series (in latin america). Not only did the animation improve and become good but the content and production became good. So in Super, the beginning was rough but they ended with a banger.
btw there are 13 DBZ movies from the 80s/90s and you watched 8 in Abridged. Which means you can still watch more movies if you want. 5 Z movies from that era (movies 9-13). The movie that the fandom considers the worst is among them (Bio-Broly). But 2 of the best movies are there too (12 & 13). I think you should watch movie 9 now since it takes place before the Buu saga. 10-13 take place during & after the Buu saga. So you can watch them after Kai.
Non of the 80s/90s films were theatrical. They were mostly 45-55 minutes VHS tapes that you can rent or buy and they would make 2 of them each year. The only exception to this is the "Path to Power" movie which was an actual theatrical film made for the big screen. Anyone can easily tell just by watching it. So you should also check it out to see what Dragon Ball would have looked like if it had a high budget production. It has 0 new characters since it's just a mix of two different Dragon Ball arcs from when Goku was a kid but it's still worth watching. It's not Z movie. It was made around the same time GT was made.
There are 4 modern Dragon Ball films and they are all theatrical. But like the Path to Power they somewhat look like TV movies with the exception of one (DBS: Broly). DBS:Broly was a true big screen experience. It has the greatest direction and animation in all of Dragon Ball history. It was honestly like a fever dream since we've never seen Dragon Ball look this good. So you should check it out. and check out the latest Dragon Ball movie "DBS: Super Hero", Super Hero was more of a slice of life comedy but it was still a lot of fun imo.
There is also the Dragon Ball GT series which was the last series to come out from the 90s era. But you can skip it and most will be ok with that. Since this is the most controversial DB series. There are some who like it but many dislike it. Think of it as an adventure series. But it isn't an adventure in the same style as OG Dragon Ball. Instead it's more of an old disney style adventure.
Sorry for writing a wall of text. Just wanted to help. I hope you'll read this.
So I recommend you watch Z movie 9 now while you're watching Kai. and after Kai you should watch:
1- the remaining Z movies (10-13)
2- OG Dragon Ball (Recut)
3- Dragon Ball: Path to Power movie
4- Dragon Ball GT (if you want... don't watch it if you're not going to enjoy a disney style space adventure)
5- Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods movie
6- Dragon Ball Z Resurrection of F movie
7- Dragon Ball Super starting from episode 28
8- Dragon Ball Super: Broly
9- Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

So flying drains a lot of energy from people who haven't been doing it for a long time, and Videl knows how tired it makes *her* to do it for too long. So she's comparing Goten's abilities to her own as well as her father's (while also not knowing he's half Saiyan), which is why she's so shocked that Goten and Trunks can sustain such an intense battle for so long
As I said in one of your previous reactions, the Funimation dub has mostly the same voices, but the soundtrack is different. And awesome. I'd (personally) recommend that version just for the music.
One thing worth noting is future Trunks grew up without Vegeta, he was more like Gohan who was his father figure, but this Trunks grew up around Vegeta, so he has a different personality.
I think you are underestimating how high level the fight between the kids is supposed to be. You say she has seen Gohan in action, but even then his feats are very straighforward. "Lift a plane", "catch some bullets". Superhuman, sure, but comprehensible.
The kids fight on another level however. They are so fast that people can barely keep up, they are moving the air around them, probably even creating feelable vibrations in the air. Videl probably has never seen anything like that and her father probably only in the Cell games as well.
One thing that they never really covered in the abridged is that Chi Chi is a very powerful woman and an accomplished martial artist (whom else would Goku be attracted to besides a good cook).
Yeah Chi Chi was never unleashed in dbza really so we don’t know her as a fighter 🤗

So the thing about Videl is she's been heavily forced to believe that it's all light show and tricks thanks to her dad and his constant boasting of him beating Cell has caused her to have an over inflated view of her father. She genuinely believes her dad is the strongest, and to be fair when compared to normal humans Satan *IS* strong but compared to the Z fighters? He's just above the average human being which is not that much higher. That being said her dad's ego passing down to her is gonna be a problem as you'll see.
Its similer to a situation from Goku's first tournment when he was a kid. He was matched up against a star fighter, a world famous power house who was considered the favorite to win. and goku took him out as a child in owhat looked like a single fit (roshi confirmed it was three hits but so fast it looked like one). the z fighters are just on another level, hell yamcha as weak as most people see him could easily wipe the floor with all the regular fighters in the tournement.

I guess some context with Krillin. When he was introduced in the original Dragon Ball, he was an extreme sleaze ball. Like first thing he tried to get Master Roshi to train him was to bribe him a stack of porn which both of them found a lot of common ground over. Over the years, he became way more respectable, but that side of him leaks out at times.
I'd love to see this once or even twice more a week if you find a spot to slot it in your lineup; The slow burn of the upload schedule is great, but man if i don't want to see more of this with you all sooner; i remember having to wait a week for each new episode (the original English airing on toonami) as a kid and i just don't want to have to wait (any length) of time to get to re-enjoy this show with you all. loving the reactions and how into these you two get.
@Bosper_der_Bogner Yeah, thats how this model works, but im not talking about seeing them early, im just talking about uploading more of them; cause right now they upload DBZKai twice a week, on Sunday and Wednesday iirc, and i'd like them to add like a Friday upload as well, not getting them faster than they do on patreon or anything, just me greedily wanting to see more of it. I don't pay for patreon, but i do know that a good number of those people with the 1 star reviews are likely the ones who paid the Tip value ($1 or so a month, which doesn't get the videos because they didn't read and just assumed)
Realizing in this watchalong the various kinds of callbacks to the original Dragon Ball, having just rewatched it recently--like Bulma pummeling Oolong as she cheered, which younger Bulma would do to him back in DB's World Tournaments lol. They definitely go way back 😂

Videls shocked about it cause she's not used to seeing that multiple people stronger than her dad, her world view is only that of him. Also yes Satan is aware that he's not strong as Goku's group, think of him as the Hero that regular people need in order for the Z fighters to keep all the crazy stuff under wraps. He will grow on you as this part goes on trust me. He has a role to play a VERY important one.

Trunks is all about endurance and power, especially ranged, and Goten is half his father's melee prowess and half Gohan and Chichi's superior technique.

Yeah, Videl doesn't really understand yet how huge a power gap exists between "normal" martial artists and those who use ki. She's never seen Gohan or anyone else fight at a truly superhuman level - all she's seen is flying and an energy blast here or there, and none of the insane strength or speed. Hell, she doesn't even realize just how strong unlocking her own ki and learning to fly as well as she has has made her. She still thinks her dad is way stronger than her, even though she'd easily demolish him in a fight now.
(Not to mention... even if power levels are meaningless, there's still the fact that she's likely only around a few hundred, while the Saiyans and their kids are like... in the hundreds of millions.)
They dont use teleportation, they just move really fast, but for enphazacing it for the audience, they animated it that way, also Videl is surprised because Goten is a 7yo, Gohan maybe strong and can fly, but he never used that speed in his Grand Saiyaman persona and he is also 17yo like her, so, she is surprised beause she never had seen the Dragon Team levels of speed before, she only had seen the ability to fly and strenght almost like her father's (She still talks about the POSIBILITY of Gohan being a good match against her father, remember?), Mr. Satan is real strong, he truly is, he certainly could pull off something like stop a moving car, or beat taller-than-him criminals, but Videl grow-up with the image of the Champion, she still thinks that her father is way stronger than even that, but she also knows some of his limits, and knows that her father couldn't move like that, that's why she is so surprised, of a 7yo kid

Babadi gathers the strongest warriors and bends them to his will. Goku kinda did this as well. All of the Z fighters except Krillin were Goku's enemy first and are now his friend/ally. Yamcha, Tien, Piccolo, Vegeta fought Goku and now stand with him in defense of the Earth. Only Piccolo and Vegeta were actually 'evil' at first though.

I think Videl was surprised about Goten. With the age difference between them she wouldn't have thought he'd stand a chance and to see him not only to be able to fly at such a young age, but stand his own against Trunks would be surprising.
Or it's just that Toriyama forgot how much Videl knew already. Toriyama does have a tendency to forget about things that happened previously, so talents characters have sometimes vanish until he remembers them and they come back. Maybe Toriyama should've started to write things down on a notepad while writing the manga. Character names, physical details, personality traits, fighting styles, combat moves, and character relations. It's funny that these two know who Launch is from a one second line in DBZA, but people who've only watched DBZ will NEVER know.
She was probably surprised by seeing them fighting like that. She never saw people flying and fighting before at such speed.

Videl has no real clue about the amount of power gohan holds. She still thinks she is weaker then mr. Satan so she thinks gohan is really strong for a human. She is not awar he can lift mountains.

Videl still thinks Mr. Satan is the most powerful fighter in the world who defeated Cell. She's only ever seen fights at his level. She's never seen anyone fight at the level Goten and Trunks are fighting at, even the adults.
A thing that annoys me about this episode is that this Kai version, they changed the fight theme during the main fight to some generic forgettable music, whereas in the original, they used Pikon's theme, a character only in fillers, but has my favorite song in the series as his theme. Pikon's theme gave the fight so much more impact.
Videl does not have any clue what Gohan can do. At this point she still thinks she can beat Gohan and that Hercule will easily win the Tournament. Based on that one would assume that his kid brother who is half his age would be far weaker. She has had Hercule sized blinders on that won't let her see the truth.
Kid trunks is more rude and disrespectful compared with Future Trunks. You can tell he had Vegeta's influence compared to Future Trunks who was very respectful to elders😂
Thinking about it... this is actually quite sad.
To Dragon Ball times there was many different Martial schools with Fighters that where able to use Energy Blasts and KI Manipulation.
But all of them either died or became part of the Goku Crew, without anyone coming after... even Roshis last student was Krillin.
Many schools with fighters able to use energy blasts? As far as I remember, among humans, there were just Mutaito's 2 surviving students-Roshi and Shen-and people they taught. So the Turtle School, i.e. the main cast, and the Crane school + Tao, Shen's brother.
The closest thing I remember otherwise is Blue's psychic abilities, which I would count as a different thing. Then it's just demons and aliens and stuff. Am I forgetting anybody?

lol krilin,hes 100 times stronger than the other kid,uhm no,the averege human adult is like 5,that kid is proly less,but even going by 5,that would make trunks 500 power level,no way thats accurate,goku was a bit less than that at the end of dragon ball,trunks and goten are freeza level in their base form,making it over 3 milion

If you do by chance decide to go back further with Dragon Ball Z, stick with Kai. It's closer to the source material, fewer bits of filler, and the script and acting are far better than the original English dub.

Honestly I think Z overall was much better, the music and acting at the end was peak. But the accuracy of lines is easily in Kai as z has too much filler which confuses the shit outta the scaling
