Your friend has a lovely home. As you will find out during your stay, having a pool is such a luxury, especially in the summers. The benefit of living in southern California is the weather is great around this time of the year. I personally prefer a cold winter but the weather today is pleasant.
Once you get a car rental, hopefully you will get a chance to explore a lot more.
A car is definitely a must in LA. Our public transportation system is lacking unfortunately

LA would not be my place. I'm an engineer in acoustic. My studies and experience would be worthless and not recognized the US.
