  • Here's another of our students from our Trandem video a few weeks ago, now out facing the world on her own!
    Watch as she starts to progress with her confidence around large vehicles in one of our local industrial estates and listen to Barry talk about the trouble we've had getting her to concentrate on her job rather than 'sight seeing' along the way!

    You are brave, whatever you may say. To keep your voice cool, calm and kind when a horse is finely balanced between acceptance and panic is a priceless accomplishment. You are a great horseman, Barry.

    Thank you ! Helpfull and very interesting ! Thank you again, for showing the process of training instead of just the "finished product", I've found that the littlest of things and actions and reactions triggered by those things actually do the most.

    Thank you, Mr. Hook! I have been waiting to hear your take on a horse like this one. I have a green welsh pony mare I’ve got going in harness with a 2-wheel cart, and she is a very looky and sensitive mare. She has been a tough nut to crack so far as desensitization goes, and it seems the best I can do is help her build confidence and be patient as I watch her have less-extreme reactions to loud and new things…

    I wonder if they think that manhole cover if they tread on them they will fall through or they don’t like the sound of them or movement of them.
    I’ve ridden horses years ago.
    I remember one day a single decker bus stopped ,and the horse was playing up so I dismounted ,the horse went to get on the bus as the doors opened..lol
    Some horses are so skittish over silly things.lbut they don’t know do they,I wouldn’t ride them on roads no more.
    You have to have patience with them.

    Horses don't have categories such as "oh, that's a different kind of car," - they have the categories that are more general, such as "I have seen that before" and "What's that new thing! Uh oh!" Is that right?

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  Před 2 lety +1

      Quite possibly, yes Brenda. They do not generalise as easily as we do in terms of 'that is a vehicle, it is yellow but still a vehicle' which can lead to issues if you don't understand that the world looks a lot different through their eyes and get frustrated at them for their reactions.

    Why the tandem turret where waterman's hook should be?

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  Před 2 lety +1

      "Should" is very relative haha We often swap horses in and out of different combinations, so Kizzy may be working in a pair or team and need a different set of turrets one day to the next. To save time we usually leave them as is - it doesn't matter if you're not using them. Also, you can hook a trace up to it when you're unhitching.

  • @comesahorseman

    Just a thought, but do you think ear plugs for this horse would make the job easier? I use them with on-track Standardbreds to keep them a little quieter in company.

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  Před 2 lety +2

      Kizzy's issues are more vision related than audio related. Also, although some use ear plugs for driving, our main form of communication with our driving horses is voice and we would not want to take any of their ability to hear instruction away from them.

    Will not it be better to drive without blinkers???

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  Před 2 lety +2

      Not in Kizzy's case. Some horses do prefer blinkerless, but if you unblinker Kizzy she has 80% more of her vision to be distracted by. Blinkers help to keep her focus on what is directly in front of her and be less distracted by things at the edge of her vision which may otherwise catch her attention.

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  Před 2 lety

      Hi Darren, we only ever use rubber bits - for everything. If a horse comes in previously used to a metal bit, it goes straight into rubber when it gets here. If a horse comes to us completely unbroken, it is mouthed in a rubber bit and stays in one. Hope that helps!
