Homemade Motor Jet Engine

  • Hey guys although this isn't really a motor jet engine its very similar to how one works, a Motor jet engine consists of a piston engine which drives compressors, on mine i used a 9v motor instead, considering its size, which drives the shaft and rotates 2 small compressors made from tin can and rotates a small turbine thats on the rear end of the canopy. Yet to me none of this really matters whether its a motor jet engine or not, i made it for fun and honestly it came out nice, its a nice little prop that u can put on your table, you can adjust the speed of the motor by using the potentiometer and you can adjust the amount of gas going in the engine, but yeah, i just wanted to somewhat explain the whole concept on this small build, I'll probably post a video on how it was made and probably post an intro as well. Thanks for watching!!

  • @Avetho
    @Avetho Před 3 lety +17

    Despite producing negligible thrust, this is a Motorjet engine. As you said, _in the description_ *(which most people here didn't read as usual),* it uses a _motor_ that drives two _compressors turbines_ before the _ignition chamber_ where the compressed air is mixed with fuel and promptly ignited before being sent out through the _nozzle._ All the components are there, its just at model scale made with materials found at home, so its efficiency and thrust-to-weight ratio are low enough that its a simple demonstration prop and nothing more except a foray into jet engine design.
    For all the keyboard-warrior know-it-alls out there, a Motorjet is a _Jet Engine_ just the same that a Turbofan, a Turbojet, a Ramjet, a Scramjet, a Valved Pulsejet, a Valveless Pulsejet, a Propfan and a Turboramjet are all _Jet Engines,_ roughly including even the SABRE and the RE Scimitar. The one unique aspect of the Motorjet engine is that its main power input comes from a "motor", hence its very name. Whether its a hybrid Motorjet or a gas Motorjet doesn't matter, it doesn't matter what generates the power for the compressor stage it could be your legs for all I care instead of an electric motor or a diesel engine or a car engine, so long as you are compressing the air and driving those compressor blades at a sufficient speed to compress the air into the combustion chamber fast enough to achieve the correct air/fuel ratio and compression ratio to start the engine.
    Aircraft that actually flew using the power of the Motorjet are as follows:
    Caproni Campini N.1 (Italy could only make 2 of them but they worked very well, top speed of 233 mph, though it also had an afterburner and variable compressor pitch)
    Yokosuka MXY-7 (only the models at the very end of wwii, the rest were solid rocket powered piloted missiles, 403 mph top speed)
    MiG-13 (production problems likely relating to metallurgy delayed it too much, only 12 were made but each could hit 510 mph and used both propeller and jet power)
    Sukhoi Su-5 (only one prototype, was both propeller and jet powered to reach 493 mph at 14k ft or 500 at 25k ft)
    The reason there were so few Motorjet powered aircraft was because of two reasons; Metallurgy advanced enough to create reliable Turbojet engines, which all military aircraft began to adopt at the same time that the Motorjet began to become actually good at making thrust, and because reciprocating gas engines at the time were far too heavy and underpowered to make an efficient Motorjet. Should someone make a Motorjet powered by a small turbodiesel engine today with more efficient compressor design, you could likely create a reliable, long range, low speed Motorjet aircraft. It would be more complex, yes, but it would quite likely work far better than the only functional examples we have today (which are all in museums of course).

    It's possible to build a real, working motorjet engine of fairly small size. I built one roughly 25 years ago as a teenager and flew an RC airplane with it.
    You need a powerful motor suited for high RPM (brushless is great) and a centrifugal compressor with an appropriate diffuser (stator with vanes for guiding the airflow).
    The hardest part is the combustion chamber, getting the fuel to mix properly with the air and burn in the chamber to produce thrust, instead of burning after the exhaust nozzle, giving a long exhaust flame. Flames in the exhaust mean wasted fuel.

    Congratulations! I remember making something like this for science fair when I was in school, but didn't go well since I made it with plastic bottle to make it a see though thing without thinking about the heat generated (I was in haste). Although it almost burned the table it was on and was a fail, I did scare a couple of parents with the sound, the whooshing noise, and successfully burned one of the teachers' eyelashes who was trying to peak into it while it was on. I made the steel version with paint can later but was too late.

      David Sager it's not really that cool. It's just a demonstration, a poor one at that but still a demonstration. It's not a proper engine because it is ran by a DC motor... all it is is a DC motor spinning a shaft on the inside with fuel being pushed through and ignited... it is not a self-sustaining engine... if it were a proper demonstration then it would be but it is not. The fact that you talk like you know anything about this is saddening... when you put "engine" in the title, it should be an actual engine. That's one thing if you use the DC motor at the beginning to turn the engine over but other than that it should be self-sustaining with the fuel

    do even know.....how a jet engine works?..........

    • @ralphneves5099
      @ralphneves5099  Před 7 lety

      Yes i do, but why does that even matter, i made this just for fun and also its a replica if you read the description i even state that this is not exactly how a motorjet works, but in some ways its similar due to how a motorjet engine is driven by a piston engine which drives a compressor, very similar to my model, the 9v motor drives the shaft which rotates 2 compressors which you can even see that its being held by a shaft collar. Thanks for the comment...
