Is HBO's The Last of Us the Best Video Game Adaptation Ever?

  • The Last of Us is a tragic show.
After Naughty Dog released the Last of Us to universal acclaim, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before the game got a live action adaptation. With a compelling worldbuilding, interesting well fleshed out characters and perhaps the best narrative seen in a video game, The Last of Us had all the makings of an incredible show. When HBO was announced to be handling the project and they were bringing on Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin as showrunners, it seemed almost too good to be true. I am happy to say that the Last of Us show does justice to its source material as it fully realizes the story and characters, bringing them into a new medium so that more people can experience all they have to offer. It is truly a special show.

You mention Ellie's agency. Here's the thing, she's fourteen years-old. In a world without cordyceps what agency would Ellie truly have in terms of being able to drive, join the military, drink, have sex, etc. Even had Anna lived, you you think Anna would have given her daughter over to Marlene's delusions? Marlene is no different than David in my eyes. The look on her face when she tells Joel about how the doctor "thinks" he can make the cure is evidence that Marlene is acting every bit the zealot David is. You said Joel didn't give Ellie a choice. I say she had no choice to sign her own death warrant. In the real world when parents or caretakers won't allow special treatments for children who belong to certain religious sects on healthcare, the state has often interceded to make sure that child gets the care they need. To me, Joel was that state. Marlene and her doctor doesn't get to "think" they "might" have a "cure" when that cure wasn't available in 1968 and 2003 when the world had much better research facilities and much better scientists. So Ellie would have been sacrificed for nothing if the "cure" couldn't be attained through cutting out Ellie's brain.
The game makes the error the show doesn't in positing Ellie is the de-facto cure when Joel rescues her. That's where the game fails in that it doesn't take into the consideration Mazin did after talking to two mycologists who said there is no cure. So one girl has to die for a big huge "maybe." That's unjustifiable bordering on stupid. Pedro/Joel is acting not only as a voice of reason, but as a still grieving father who will not sacrifice another daughter to this madness. If that were me, I'd have done the same thing as Joel. Interesting poll taken about the result of the first game's ending. Those who didn't have kids said Joel was 100000% wrong. Those with kids said what Joel did was what they would have done based on the same criterion and they cheer Joel on for doing it. I have no children, but I say Joel did what he had to do given Marlene, nor the doctor, knew really what they were doing.

I completely disagree with you regarding the scene where Joel massacres the fireflies. I think the dissociation works really well, showing that he’s only focused on getting Ellie back, he barely notices that he’s killing. We know already that he does bad things, that was well established. To me, seeing him choose to kill Marlene and lie to Ellie is enough to cement that he’s very aware of what he’s doing.
I see the dissociative style as a way to show that he’s in “the zone”, lazer focused on Ellie and doesn’t care who gets hurt.

i actually just don't like the actors, not that i don't like them as people or actors LMAO but for these specific roles i think there are many others who would have fit the roles better. Pascal definitely is a waste of mooney, i mean he is a good actor, but the same could have been achieved for the show with a less known and there for "cheaper" actor which would also give a boost to that alternative actors career.
Bella Ramsey seems so sweet, so no hate at all on them, but i just can't see them as Ellie, their face, their voice and their emotional expressions are for me not associated with the character Ellie at all. Again, this has nothing to do with the actors them selves, it's just a lazy job done by who ever were responsible for finding actors for the show.
this is the only thing i can put on the show that i don't like, unfortunately it's such a big thing that it literally ruins the vibe of the show for me, i hope i get over it so i can commit fully to the show and actually enjoy it.

I gotta disagree with the Ellie/Riley thing. The switch is jarring and I definitely think the 9 episode format does hurt it, but it's crucial in establishing why Ellie feels so abandoned by the world. WHY she clings on to Joel so tightly. (Even after the last episode) Throughout the series we know why Joel is the way he is, the first episode solidifies it, but we never get that for Ellie. That wouldn't be a big deal if Ellie was a helpless child, with no agency, but that's not who Ellie is. Ellie is young, yeah, but it's shown countless times that she is extremely, scarily, capable. I don't think the episode fit as nicely as it could have, but I do think the story was necessary.
Also - yeah the finale was too short. But you said a key word and skipped over it. "Dissociative." Joel completely separates himself from reality, in the interrogation scene he was brutal, yeah, but still there. In the finale, there is nothing but Ellie. He's no longer injured. There's nothing stopping him from being that dark/violent man that Tommy and his wife hinted at. Joel takes Bill's words not to heart but to his being. He is a protector. I thought it was a good case of show don't tell by them. (But yeah I really wish the finale was longer, things could've been fleshed out, but the way they filmed the fight/rescue I loved) I definitely agree that there could've been more Joel/Ellie in the entire show. Hell they could've made it a 12 episode season with 2 episodes just being about the two of them and I would've loved it!
I know I had some disagreements, but this was a great video!!! And honestly totally valid critiques!

Very good video and thank you for mentioning Ellie’s agency because that really is such a fascinating factor that ultimately does not matter. A heart breaking but honest truth. Whether in the show or real life, the matter is that Ellie is 14, and no 14 year old gets to sign off on such a big maybe. You die and it’s for nothing or you die and it’s for something, but regardless you still die, and you’re only a child. That choice was always going to be made by the adults and having these two polar opposite characters be the ones to fight for that final decision is so so so good to watch. One is a father and family man who’s shown he’d do /anything/ for his family. The other is a leader who will do and sacrifice whatever is deemed necessary for the sake of the majority. Things could not be more different for both and ultimately that’s what makes the actions taken all the more damning AND human. Whether Joel’s decision was right or wrong doesn’t matter, we could argue that and have been arguing that since the game came out. What does matter is the relatability of it. Of Ellie having no say in something so big, of Marlene choosing to have Ellie die for the sake of humanity, even on a very big maybe, and of Joel refusing and fighting against that. Of making the wrong choices that will ultimately have horrific consequences all around. The humanity of it all is what’s left a legacy and impact that was iconic for the game and I do think the show served faithfully.
Personally, I agreed with Joel and felt for him. If put in his spot, I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same, especially considering my own siblings are around Ellie’s age and like hell I would ever let them make such a decision, even less allow for anyone to try and take them to slaughter on a hope that isn’t solid nor guaranteed.

Short answer, no. Especially because Arcane exists. That said, I'd still wait for a season 2 just to see which parts of the game they'll remove or change

It’s not “good” at all 😂🤷‍♂️in fact it was either average at best/bad. I’d argue it was bad. And I’m so disappointed because it’s like they fooled me the first two episodes into believing it was good. And then episode 3 came😞🤦‍♂️and that’s when I realized this show was actually garbage, and it was downhill from there unfortunately. I’d rank the last do us maybe 4.5-5/10 not a very good first season I was extremely disappointed. It was just average or bad in most categories. The pacing is awful how is the show boring/ slow and fast/rushed at the same time? The relationships and the character feel forced. There’s no real threat of anything. It has multiple filler episodes. The dialogue is cringeworthy. They tell you things about characters instead of actually showing them. It was just a bloody mess. I will the acting was pretty good and the cinematography was excellent. But that’s all the show had going for it 4.5/10

@@david.l8698 How she got her immunity is fine.
How her immunity works is either grossly mis explained or complete bullshit.
"The doctors think that her Cordyceps creates chemical messages that trick normal Cordyceps into thinking _she's_ Cordyceps."
      I'm paraphrasing.
The Infected are controlled & operated by Cordyceps, so wouldn't the other Infected think she's just one of them, because technically she _is_ Infected?
If I were to rewrite the explanation, I would say...
"The doctors think that her Cordyceps makes chemicals that make regular Cordyceps dormant, that's why her bites & scratches don't get worse, it stops it in their tracks."

oh yeah, I loved the movie adaptation, Ellie talking like a truck driver/sailor totally resonated with me, just like in the video game... such artistic vision, to see through the lame video game and understand that audiences truly crave a gratuitously swearing kid in a post apocalyptic setting - I mean, THE DEPTH of it all?! right?
