For this list, we've looked at all punk albums, and included those records without which the genre could not have developed in the way that it has.

green day was the death of punk.
no.
+MrTurdinater You're the death of my brain cells
+Dan W-M Bro? name a famous punk band that came after greenday
Jarryd Mahabir panic! At the disco.
That doesn't mean Green Day killed punk XD
I love how you played "Bullet" for Walk Among Us, despite it not being on that album, and you showed footage of the Misfits performing with Graves on vocals, even though he joined the band over a decade after that album.
What a faux pas to show Michale Graves on stage with the Misfits and not Danzig
I was thinking the same thing. I did actually like Graves though. Nostalgia
@@onesickpuppy84 Famous monsters and static age are my favorite albums.
They did show footage with Danzig before the Graves footage but I agree...makes no sense to show Graves when they are discussing an album he wasn't on. Would be like showing Danzig footage for Famous Monsters. Of course lets also not forget that there isn't a ton of Danzig-era Misfits footage out there
Famous Monsters is my fav after Walk Among Us.. There I admitted it. Now we can move on 🖕😁
onesickpuppy84 kinda late reply but I feel like as graves came along the style changed
Agent orange living in darkness
Fantastic album (and the first proper punk album I had ever heard at the ripe age of 13) but not influential enough in my opinion. Keep in mind that they seriously changed direction by Living In Darkness which even flirted with a more New Wave/Surf sound. That being said, they're in my top 10.
Blatant localism
Mike Hunt 🤘🏼
@@floydkelley3 13? I started 9
@@insane_monkey I started listening to Punk when I began skateboarding and hanging out with older kids.
How is Minor Threat not on this list?
+john cornwell It is.
+Patrick Mass As an honorable mention.
john cornwell yeah, wm Sucks
I mean
GREENDAY ?
s
Seriously ?
+kevin willems hell yeah..crass should be on here.
ya. they were more influential than a majority on the list.
A few missing...
X- Los Angeles
New York Dolls- New York Dolls
Television- Marquee Moon
the germs?
I love Marquee Moon, but I didn't know television was considered a Punk band.
+Asier Ardanza they weren't and Patti Smith wasn't punk either (as much as I love her work)
Television was post punk, though
Yeah I hesitated and had to think about Television before putting them there. They are more post punk or new wave.
"The Misfits: Walk Among Us, we might have featured Static Age if not for Walk Among Us"
*Plays Bullet*
also, they SHOW graves? lolz
bruh xdxd
Static Age wasn't released until 1997
@@moshwithjosh8 statoc age was is from 1978 but misfits released it in 1997
sussy baka imposter among us 😳 dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun
“Walk among us” proceeds to play a song not on the album and shows Michale Graves
Honestly, "Punk" can be defined as and mean something different to each generation. Obviously, the originators and pioneers deserve to be on this list. But, some later bands (like Green Day) deserve to be on here, too. Like most things in life-- Punk expanded and became more vast, less straight ahead, and somewhat of an umbrella term with many sub-genres: including Pop-Punk. The Ramones and The Clash had some poppy as hell melodies... Yet I constantly see people preaching how bands like them are "true punk." What exactly constitutes as "true punk"? Attitude? Lyrical content? A "heavy/fast-paced/raw" sound? Playing hole-in-the-wall venues for no pay and being anti-establishment? Or is it just a lifestyle and a mindset? A place of belonging? Everyones definition varies, therefore many different bands could technically fall under the genre. These arguments are a waste of time.
As for me, Green Day spoke for their generation.. and ANOTHER generation after that. They were so many peoples first exposure to the genre. Whether or not they're "punk" to you doesn't matter. They're punk to someone else. Not to mention they've already been around for nearly 30 years. They've made their mark. Aside from GD, you people whining about how "______ is NOT punk!1!! Any band after 1990 aren't punk!!!1!! LOL shitty sell outs!!!!!!!" about literally any band that falls between 1990-2005 seriously have to get over it. You sound like bitter and immature elitists - It's predictable, exhausting, and way past getting old.
+Brittany Butler Well said. Epitaph's website lists bands like Bad Religion, Descendents, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, etc in their artists list as well as Green Day. So we have a major record label (a big punk no-no) with a bunch of popular bands (popularity is another big punk no-no to these elitists) however Green Day is the only one that gets shit for it.
Brittany you are awesome
+Brittany Butler NO THEY DONT--YOUR YOUNG....PUNK IS A MOMENT IN TIME THAT IS DEAD AND CANNON BE LIVED TWICE-EITHER YOU WERE THERE OR YOUR JUST ACTING LIKE WHAT YOU THINK A PUNK IS OR WAS......SOCIETY IS DIFFERENT TODAY.IT WAS A FEELING IN TIME JUST AS THE HIPPIES WERE A FEELING IN THE 60'S...SORRY TO BURST PEOPLES BUBBLES BUT IF YOU ARE POST 1988,YOU MISSED PUNK
+Kevin Cannon The initial movement and the actual music genre are now two different things. Clearly, if you didn't live when Punk was first happening... Yeah, "you missed punk." But, that doesn't mean the feeling and spirit wasn't reignited in a way that related to kids of a later generation through Pop-Punk.
Let me tell you, that music has made just as much of an impact on us. And as a generation of young adults today, we're forever hooked on what it made us feel. It never leaves you. It was our place of belonging. That is one thing we have in common. That sense of community is something so unique to the genre. The Late 90s/Early 2000s was it's own thing. There are already kids from this current generation saying they wished they lived through it. For those of us who were there for it and related - it can't be relived either, my friend. It was magic for us. Just because you didn't experience it like we did or understand what it was like.. Doesn't mean you have the right to look down upon later manifestations of the genre. As you said, society is different. But, it's all linked back to the beginnings.
+Kevin Cannon Lighten up, Francis
GREENDAY ? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME ?
HAHAHAHAHAHAA
Mind as well put blink 182 while you're at it.
+TomHat92 Yeah or the New Kids on the Block
+Patrick Mass What are you... like 16? What do you know about punk music?
+David Briley Apparently knows more than you if you think Green Day is punk.
Green day is pop PUNK which is still punk
Where is Suicidal Tendencies?
Postscript: I love Black Flag xd
They were more metal later on
All I wanted was a Pepsi!
Suicidal Tendencies is Thrash Metal
@@jorgesequera8876 like most metal bands, they started out punk. Check out their debut album Suicidal Tendencies

Minor Threat - Complete Discography Not Green Day!
omg green day is so bad. do you agree?

@@zackzallie8735 huh?
@@sharkinfestedwaters97 i was being ironic lol
@@zackzallie8735 oh i just didnt get what you meant
No Circle Jerks??? Wtf
Great band, but would you really say they were influential the way Bad Brains or Black Flag were?
black flag became metal or heavy rock in massive crowds so it lost its punk, Bad brains did the same and played in the famous CBGBs which was for new wave and only adopted the sound and distorted it. Circle Jerks kept their cool but they were only influential in LA
Wild in the streets
That is a classic
No bleach by nirvana?
I went to school w Chad he listened to Die Kruezen and I listened to Kraut
Lol Green Day and no Bad Religion
+Liam Smith After Greenday i was waiting for ''The Offspringshit''
hahahaha
Ikr
Exactly what I was thinking.
i was waiting for crass
BR would be at the top of my list
Bad Religion "Suffer."
@Aidan Evans how about both
I honestly think any bad Religion album up to 96 and excluding into the unknown could be on this list
I find it hilarious that WATCHMOJO the least punk cooperation ever makes a video like this!
Suicidal Tendencies doesn't make the list? Not even a mention?
RapidMC15.... just give Mike his Pepsi!! 😂👍👍
Dennis Leavitt all I wanted was a Pepsi:(
Nope. Sorry bro. Green day is much more important.
Kyle Palen
My ass...
Ouch
I love London Calling, but when you talk about an IMPORTANT album by The Clash, that honor should go to their self-titled debut. So much raw power and energy behind every song
I like Green Day, but I don't think they should be on the list. Replace their spot with Minor Threat instead of throwing them in the honorable mentions
Totally
And Blondie also needs to be on the list :'(
Fin Brook No they are pop punk in some places, but they aren’t always pop punk
Milo Goes to College is magic. It's hard to explain why it's good, but it's so good that you can't just name "highlights" from the album. You just wanna say "EVERY FUCKING SONG !" and at the same time, you can't really pinpoint why they're so good.
Fucking magic.
Wow I can't believe The Germs' (GI) isn't here
DarkPulll Why put Bad Religion on the list, when you can put Green Day on the list?
That's what I just commented before seeing yours. The Germs were horrible musically, but their influence was huge. The LA scene, hardcore, they influenced Nirvana, Black Flag. If they want to list influential albums, they failed right there.
Jairo Martinez-Ortiz germs???bunch uneducated stupid low life
That album basically stared hardcore punk (well it made it popular anyway)
Great album! Glaring omission. Got to be honest, though, didn’t expect much going into it from Mojo.
bullet is not on walk among us.
+Richard James I noticed that too. Great song but newp not on walk among us.
+Richard James I just posted about that. Should have read the comments. It was supposed to be a part of the album Static Age that never came to fruition while the original band was together
they also showed footage of michael graves who obviously was not the singer on that album
Luke Koehler I literally stopped watching this video at the point I saw Michael Graves, just to make a comment on it.
Ik it’s fucking hilarious
WatchMojo: we’re counting down our top ten best punk albums
Me, an insufferable elitist old punk: this is gunnna fucken suck lol
Yeah bro is Green Day really even punk😂
@@acetckfan3279 In my opinion, Insomniac goes hard. Great Green Day album.
American punk is so different to UK punk. UK will always be the best. No thrash, no bubblegum punk ala Green Day, good that band sucks. Best band to come from America is The Ramones, the rest are just pale imitations, and that's stretching it
Circle jerks should have gotten Green Day’s spot. London calling was second to their self titled record The Clash that came out in 1977. I can live with that lineup. Minor threat belongs on here higher than honorable mention.
demoanddestroy Circle jerks is better, but Green Day more important
London calling was definitely a better album but since a lot of the songs on there aren’t really punk I’d say their debut would be more relevant to the video
@@natesteven5826 the debut was flawless
No adolescents blue album?
Joe WERE JUST THE WRECKING CREW, BORED BOYS WITH NOTHING TO DO!
Descendents should be higher on the list imo
I agree.
I agree it deserved a higher place.
They are underrated.
Maybe it's better that way, less stupid people listening.
+Monique T. I am surprised they got a mention at all so I'd take what they got. Descendants never usually get much recognition when people think Punk :(
Okay, BUT crucial additions would be :
1. GI - Germs
2. The Feeding of 5000 - Crass
3. Punk In Drublic - NOFX
4. Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies
The germs suck.
What about agent orange living in darkness

no operation ivy?
Matthew Aguila imo rancid better
I know.... Operation Ivy were among the first to fuse punk w/ ska, & reggae to some degree. Some of my all time favorite songs are off “Energy.” Hoboken, Take Warning, Freeze Up, etc. Not to mention how much Tim learned from them & carried that over to Rancid. Op Ivy always gets overlooked
Punk has always had ties to Reggae music.
With out op Ivy you don't have green day.

Andrew Price no, no it shouldn't. Sucidal Tendencies suck.
Call of Honey Boo Boo im guessing you're a green day fanboy
of course it should!
yes suicidal tendencies too. lol this is hilarious. these makers are prolly millinials lol
The studio version of Hope from descendents is one of my favourite songs period.
MISFITS (original members) AND THE RAMONES FOREVER!!!!!
the misfits just are not the same without Glenn and Doyle
Truer words have never been spoken.
Bobby Steele knows how to play guitar you know the guitarist before Doyle where Doyle replacing Bobby led to Glenn leaving to form Samhain
Shay138 I know everybody thinks graves is better
@@kennethbonura1 Very true, Bobby Steele’s guitar tone was incredible
Why is everyone trying to police what's punk and what's not punk? Personally I don't like green day much, and would've rather liked to see Bad Religion or Death, but who cares? Everyone has a personal definition of punk and that's what makes it great. Who's to say what can be called punk and what can't?
P.s. Death is an old band from the 60's I think? Not the metal band one but the other one, they're pretty cool if you haven't heard them check them out.
+Kevin I was sad to see Bad Religion not even mentioned other than before the video started, but other than being one of the oldest punk bands I don't know if they ever did anything especially notable for the genre. Same goes for Green Day, except maybe they made it a little more mainstream?
I think Steve Jones' opening riff on "Pretty Vacant" is the best clarion call to punks worldwide! It resonates deep within!
The Saints - I'm Stranded
The Damned - Damned Damned Damned
Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material
And Raw Power should be number one.
Damned Damned Damned was superior to the debuts of the Pistols, Ramones, or The Clash. I'd even go out on a limb and say that Siouxsie and the Banshees had a more impressive debut. Inflammable Material was a damn masterpiece that sailed right over the heads of most people but [unfortunately] the Irish bands didn't gain any traction until U2 played Live Aid.
Good choices but I think that it goes without saying that this was intended to be a U.S. only list. Yes?
@@c.s.4428 The Sex Pistols were on the list.
London Calling is one of the best albums ever made
I reckon that this is supposed to be U.S.-only list. BTW, London calling is a punk album but it is NOT a "punk rock" album!
@@c.s.4428 its core genre is punk bit it includes alot of subgenres
Yeah Probably my favorite album of the 80s but it really was the clash moving away from traditional punk sounds
Where the hell is GBH- Leather, Bristles, Studs And Acne or The Exploited- Punks Not Dead, Discharge- Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing, Subhumans- The Day The Country Died?!?!
Because those are all interchangeable paint by numbers bands, with no real importance?
They are a total paint by numbers band-wagon band. file under Chron-Gen, Bekki-Bondage, Chelsea. The exploited, GBH etc, etc etc...england 77-79 is full of wanker hanger on band of no importance. Look every scene is full of 3rd and 4th scene bands. It's a way of life.
atarijawa462 I mean you can say that over and over again all you want, still wrong
RIGHT:GBH one of the best.
and don't listen punk through the médias and their recognition.
Punk was against the rules
Misfits are a great band, but "Walk Among us" is important is because it was out of print longer than the rest of their catalog, creating a demand for something that was unavailable for the masses until 1988.
sussy among us
I feel as if Static age is better
Pussy posers
This video is pretty on point... for whoever made it.. Thanks!
Big props for at least mentioning Refused! Went to Coachella just because of their reunion (and At the Drive In) and sounded like they never broke up! "The Shape of Punk to Come " is an amazing record!
The fact that NOFX was only shown and not mentioned is a farce.
Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables has got to be my all time favorite punk album, I know it seems mainstream and general, but that album helped me fall in love with punk
But it wasn't released until 4 months after your death!
Out Come the Wolves was mine
Not their best
but it sounds more like postpunk, california, holiday dont sound like punksongs.
The fact that you didn't put Living in Darkness by Agent Orange (1981) on that list, which is, by all accounts, a fucking masterpiece of surf/skate punk that completely reignited the entire west coast to the scene and created bands like Green Day, The Offspring, etc...
Means you guys know all about punk from fucking wikipedia.
BAD BRAINS "ROCK FOR LIGHT"... one of the best..
No Stiff Little Fingers or DeadBoys? 😭
Not quite up there in terms of cultural impact, especially in terms of albums. The Dolls were a lot more influential, particularly Thunders' guitar style, but calling them punk is just too much a stretch, they were a glam band that foreshadowed punk.
No
Not in top 10
Hell no
Yea the fingers definitely should be there.
The fact That Hüsker Dü wasn't even mentioned in This video is a complete travesty.
The fact green day is on here and not Hüsker Dü is a travesty
+Vincent L Yes...without Hüsker Dü most of the Grunge scene wouldn't have happened. So they were more than important to the music history...
+Vincent L Zen Arcade changed even more than the punk scene and The Dream Syndicate did even more than the Misfits for the punk and it's not mentioned too. the world is fked up
Vincent L Hüsker Dü went from a hardcore band to becoming a great influence on 90s alternative and beyond
How come FEAR is never in any of your "punk" list? They are one of the great bands to come out of L.A. in the 80's and now.
X: Los Angeles should be up there.
Yes
Out of vogue
There's cool, then there's Billy Zoom cool
I dare someone to tell Henry Rollins he's on the same list as green day
Green Day rocks dude.
While dookie was an excellent album, it’s foolish to say its more influential than some of the bands who didn’t make the cut. Bad religion, nofx, op ivy, to name a few.
He probably wouldn't give the slightest of a fuck to be honest
who's henry rollins? never heard of him
The Idiot Guitar Guy He'd write an entire stand-up special about you.
I always felt the offspring, primarily their first 3 albums, were overlooked. They were punk genius and definitely deserve more recognition
Damned Damned Damned by the Damned should’ve gotten at least an honorable mention
I reckon this was intended to be a U.S.-only list
@@c.s.4428 no they put Sex Pistols and Clash in it

#5 - should be before Black flag /\
#4 - Proto Punk who cares about billboard

#1 - Well that was a no brainer
In summery WatchMojo is a farce of a list builder and compiler. No mention of the New York Dolls , Husker Du, Minute Men, Circle Jerks etal. There honourable mentions are mostly no where near as important (Less MC5) to the actual importance of punk.
But dookie was massive and was leading punk even if it was turning into pop punk

My favorite punk album will always be Mariah Carey's self-titled debut. You know it kicked ass with the songs like "Vision of Love" and "Love Takes Time"!!!
But of course, Mojo's number one will be Ramones with their tear-dropping song "I Wanna Have Your Boyfriend".
Wtf. You forgot one of the Most influential punk bands in time. DISCHARGE!?
They inspired not only a hole world of punk, also metal. Thrash and death metal is born out of Discharge partly. Plus they created D-beat.
nice work on the "walk among us" with micheal graves footage. ding dong.
Hands down London Calling is the best music album of all times
What happened with first Suicidal Tendencies LP, man...that's one of the best Punk band in Los Angeles, California. And still going strong today.
Joseph Hampton pure punk, not crossover.
That first suicidal tendencies album was punk as fuck
metalmoshingmad777 The first ST record was pure punk
Join the army was still pretty hardcore as well, love Suicidal Maniac
The first Punk band to put out a single is The Damned and if you, haven’t checked them out, you are missing out! Dave Vanian and co invented Goth Punk but don’t hold that against them, they are more funny than gloomy and they put out My favorite punk album of all time Machine Gun Ettiquette! Wild In The Streets(Circle Jerks)
Machine Gun Etiquette(The Damned)
Suicidal Tendencies self titled

It is influential, though, not best. Do you think bands sound different today because of Los Angeles the way they do because of Never Mind the Bollocks?
"Looked at ALL punk albums"
Haha, exactly...
TSOL "Change Today?"
Bloody brilliant album, not a bad track to be heard on that release. I don't think it gained any traction due to it being released on Enigma which sunk, tossing a masterpiece of an album into obscurity. Red Shadows and Flowers By The Door? Can I get a Amen??
Fantastic album and top 3 TSOL albums but not really in the top 10 punk albums.

Never mind the bollocks should be #1
Garbage
If sex pistols invented punk rock maybe the album would be no #1
(I love all sex pistols song but i hate all the member)
Blitzkrieg bop, is one of the first punk records, depends if you're calling stooges and mc5 punk, or protopunk. But never mind the bullocks, should probably be number 2, cuz it really sat a lot of punk in.
I agree with their #1 pick, but I am pretty disappointed that Bikini Kill didn't make it on here. I think they should have gotten an honorable mention
Love bikini kill!
Or.... L7??!!!
Who made this list? You are FIRED!!
This list is utter dogshit. There is nothing wrong with a "Best U.S. punk albums" list but you would have to do 3 (possibly 4) different lists: i) Best U.S. pre-punk albums (of which there are many) ii) Best U.S. 70's punk albums iii) Best U.S. hardcore punk albums and then iv) Best U.S. commercial/radio-friendly punk albums (:) )
The problem with lists like this is that it is never possible to truly nail down where a genre label like 'punk' begins and ends , and what is best or most important is totally subjective by nature . One thing for certain though is that the way this is presented is about as un-punk as could be. It sounds like Entertanment! Tonight.
Jeff Downing.... EXACTLY, your comment make be the best summing up of this list and how awful it is!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Yip. But it is just motive for discussing and learning. It is not bad.

Dookie definitely deserves to be on the list. It's probably the most influential pop punk album to date. Other than that I'd say this is a well assembled list. I would have liked to have seen Hüsker Dü's Zen Arcade on there but to each their own I guess.

Where's Blink-182
+Dennis Ambrocio its punk not pop
+Dennis Ambrocio shut up
don't ever sing green day again
Do they not understand that popularity doesn't equate to importance. Green day shouldn't be on there. Love them but they wernt important to expansion of the genre.
94s Dookie and Smash had no importance in the expansion of punk??? Sorry to all you hardcores whether you don't like Greenday or the Offspring 94 was a big year that made a resurgence.
+UFConVHS out cone the wolves had a bigger impact than both of those.
+clashcitycretin10 😂😂it's "out come the wolves"
+UFConVHS But that resurgence did not start with Greenday or the Offspring, it started with Bad Religion and Dead Kennedys. Even though they had both been around since the early 80s they both released albums in the late 80s that reinvigorated the punk scene. There would be no Greenday without Bad Religion, which is why I think that people are pissed. Greenday may have made a punk-esk music mainstream, but for punk audiences it is Bad Religion that started the come-back of punk.
samlfb what do you mean resurgence? there where massive scenes all through the 80s, just underground and unheard of. i love both these bands but the idea that they had an impact on punk is silly. your right imo about bad religion, but that just proves my point. any way Nirvana broke punk back to the mainstream in the 90s, you wouldn't call them punk though would you and put them on this list. really the only reason green day and the offspring got big in the 90s, was because of Nirvana.
How did Rancid and NOFX wind up in the "Honorable Mentions Section" ?

I'd add "Death Walks Behind You" by Atomic Rooster. Very underrated band/album
Television has to be on there somewhere. The band that started the punk scene at CBGB. Richard Hell was in that band, and he is who Malcolm McLaren went back to England to try to replicate with Johnny Rotten and the Pistols. NY Dolls should be there too.
What were the reggae bands that influenced punk in the beginning. I never hear much about any specific reggae bands that helped influence the hole punk sound?

No G.B.H and Exploited? Their logos were literally on EVERY punk rocker's leather jacket in the 80's...

1:12 damn this guy is a ninja, he had a bottle tossed at him and he dodged it like a boss
To not have damned damned damned in top 10 is sacrilege . It knocks the spots off all of these and maybe because this list has been compiled by an American they have been forgotten about, but these guys started it all off in the uk and are still going strong.
First punk single. PERIOD. End of story. Captain Sensible ran circles around Steve Jones, Mick Jones, and Johnny Ramone. Brian James also was a superior musician to the "Big 3" punk bands. In 100% agreement.
