In the 80s, I ripped my jeans and wear them as my "punk uniform" and my parents, siblings, neighbors will tell me that I look untidy. At present day, they are the ones wearing ripped jeans bought from a department store and I think the jeans cost more with more rips. .. the irony.

There's so much misunderstanding of what Punk is. It's about being your own master and truly standing up for what you believe in. It's pretty ironic how a lot of people who consider themselves Punk (mainly by the way they dress) all dress the same.

Punk proved one thing, if nothing else: there are more alienated people out there than just the one or two you know at school. I see a lot of lamentations about punk having become mainstream, but the thing is: there are thousands of the alienated out there. The real underlying cause is this: to make it in this world, you have to have three things: Good looks, good intelligence, and you have to know the right people and be in their good graces. A lot of the early punks were intelligent, most were good looking, but the few that knew the right people definitely were not in their good graces.
I'm also reminded of a line in the song Anarchy is Now a Product: "Now if you want the revolution/ You're part of the establishment."
Punk had underground places all over, even in places you wouldn't think punk would flourish, like Texas and Florida USA.

Music should never be just a business...music should have feel, passion, talent in it. That music should admired...Like it was in the 60s and 70s. But that of course will never happen again, cause of the technology.

Now over 40 years later I still go to gigs to see cover bands. Last year I saw the Damned for the first time and they were brilliant. A lot has happened in 40 years music wise but I can safely say I prefer early punk to the rubbish that is being churned out today. Once a punk always a punk.

Hmmmm... You know, I kind of feel like the focus on punk aesthetic is the mark of a square. Didn't hear anything about how disastrous the economic policies at the time were on working families whose kids spawned punk and how stadium rock had this complete disconnect from young people who weren't going to shell out serious coin to hear those kinds of acts. The media really learns nothing. Just like with hip hop. When pop culture prices itself out of the market, people will make their own damned music. And then the intelligentsia tries to describe it on their own terms instead of actually listening.
That said, wtf does Corre know? Sell that shit to some rich bastard for whatever his precious little market will bear and feed the poor. Officious fucker.

As usual they just focus on the first years when the biggest recordlabels released records with punkbands. All the years after when it was just as many people involved who kept the scene alive by doing things themselves (Do It Youself-ethics) gets ignored. It´s like if it´s underground and independent it doesn´t exist? When Joe Corre´s burn stuff it´s just a publicity stunt to get some free advertisment but his arguments about punk is valid to some extent. It´s a shame though that he more or less just burn money. He could get the same amount of attention if he officially declared that he should sell this stuff but then give the money to charity because of his discontent with the progress and status of punk nowadays. I get a bit suspicious though that a privileged rich kid all of a sudden cares so much about punk and politics when he doesn´t seem to have cared the slightest before maybe it have become chic to be radical again?

@MrOnionCock Anyone labeling themselves as punk, regardless of what generation they grew up in, is probably worth cutting a wide berth. The early American bands hated being called "punks" and it wasn't until some of the early British bands, who weren't even around to begin with, adopted it that the "scene" took off. Why is it that the biggest knobheads with the loudest opinions of punk generally don't know what they're talking about?

Thanks for that. Some excellent footage there.Pity i was a couple of years older as i was into Stooges,MC5,The Velvets,The NY Dolls and Nuggets etc.It was great that Punk came along at that time though , as things needed shaking up.A lot of people had got into Pub Rock as let's face it just who would want to listen to triple Yes albums ! The Ramones first album really set things off again.

Punk was, maybe became, more about the ideas than the music. Disenfranchised youth and anger at the establishment is alive and well. I think those either obsessed to distraction or angry at perceived defacement of the the past are missing the point. Those couple of crucial years in the 70's and 80's gave birth to a great genre of music, yes. But they created a culture of defiance and free speech that evolved and progressed. Punk as a concept has changed names and faces over the years, but it is alive and well, even if you wouldn't recognize it now.

Punk as a genre may have started to form in the US firstly, but it was much more than that in England, it was a movement. England defined the genre and made it into a cultural phenomenon. The roots? Yeah, mostly American. So punk wouldn't have existed without either one of these countries.
