      +Benny Biggums You sir are an idiot...How in the hell did The Sex Pistols fit into a stereotype of what a punk is or was when they were one of the very first "punk" bands...Oh and the Misfits, yeah they were not a stereotype either...all the bands that came MUCH MUCH MUCH more later who copied these bands were a sort of stereotype, but then again you must not know much about punk to make a comment like that to begin with.

    Best Punk band for me is for sure The Clash, but in saying that Strummer even said if it was not for The Ramones and the Sex pistols he would still be playing in a "pub rock band" so fair play, but i was brought up on British Punk, so i would include The Damned, Vibrators, 999, Chelsea, The Lurkers, X ray spex, Buzzcocks and Slaughter and the Dogs, did not get into American Punk much later, and i have to say much gratitude to Rancid and the "wildcat" record label as if it not for said record label, Strummer may have faded into obscurity, its a great list and to each his own, respect.

      I get your thing about lyrics. Green Day's lyrics is too intricate and poetic for most punk fans to follow. So they just reject it as non sense while it really isn't.

      I think the Offspring is a hell of a lot better than Green Day. Because at least the Offspring shows a lot more kinship to their Punk Roots, and they went on recent tours with Fellow Punk bands, Bad Religion, and NOFX and Social Distortion.
      Green Day is a good band and all but they just sold out and became the basis for modern mainstream pop punk bands like Sum 41.

    This is the problem with punk, it means different things to different people and it's an extremely vague word to describe music. If you're arguing about "punk music" in the comments, chances are you're not very punk though... I wanna say NoFx should be number one, but I don't wanna hear some shit about how they're not punk enough...

    • @JohnSpawn1
      @JohnSpawn1 Před 10 lety +9

      "Ramones manager Danny Fields recalls a conversation between Johnny Ramone and Clash bassist Paul Simonon (which he mislocates at the Roundhouse): "Johnny asked him, 'What do you do? Are you in a band?' Paul said, 'Well, we just rehearse. We call ourselves the Clash but we're not good enough.' Johnny said, 'Wait till you see us-we stink, we're lousy, we can't play. Just get out there and do it.'""
      This is what punk should be about. Having fun even when playing simple, but memorable tunes. It was the perfect response to the progressive and heavy metal music which had become overblown, pretentious and lacked the fun that rock'n'roll once was about. The people arguing about what is punk and what isn't really miss the point.

I'm a metal fan through and through. But I consider myself educated in other genres. So I wouldn't consider the Offspring punk as much as alternative rock, because they were not punk at all. Punk is a term used to classified punk in general, including all sub-genres. Pop punk being one of them. It also clearly states that this video also featured ALTERNATIVE bands, which both has converted to. It also mentioned this list featured bands whom were influential on the genre. Green Day, like them or not, was a huge part in the newer era of punk, influencing bands like Sum 41, blink, etc. Just 'cause you don't like a band, doesn't mean they're bad.

    MINOR THREAT?!??!?

  • @leonardthesnifferwallace5073

    Sex Pistols better than The Clash?? They made *one* album, which musically and lyrically was average at best. Sex Pistols were just a manufactured punk band created by Malcolm McLaren since it was becoming popular and he decided to cash in on it. They were more about creating controversy ("God Save the Queen") and headlines than actually having a message.
    As much as I like The Ramones, putting them first is just crazy. Musically they never veered off their typical 3 chord sound which is fine for a short while but nothing you listen to for more than 30 minutes. I don't know about you but music usually is judged by how well written it is and its many layers.
    Iggy Pop and the Stooges easily triumph Ramones too.
    These 90's pop-punk bands really are indistinguishable from most dime-a-dozen hard rock bands and really just rebel for the sake of rebelling. Rock wrapped up in a pseudo-punk image, made not too offend anybody too much, spells watered down music. Dead Kennedy's stood for what they said and dared offending even such "great musical institutions" as MTV.
    Most of the 90's "punk" bands allowed themselves to be milked by MTV for all their worth and unlike the grunge band Nirvana - who openly stated their disdain for MTV and thrived on it - these others just rode in on the void that had been left.
    The reality is that the best "punk bands" of the last 20 years aren't even doing punk music. They understand the genre and what it stands for more than the we're-angry-at-everything-we-really-don't-know-a-shit-about punk bands of today.

      Green Day has not been influential.They have clearly no legacy. And the producor of the SP had the idea to create a punk band after having seen the Ramones in concert. Ramones inspirated the SP.

      Oh my favorites! We should be friends :D
      A lot of Americans don't even know who the Jam is.. which is a shame. They were more real punk in attitude/ideals-wise than sex pistols, which were all about image. After all, the beginning of Holiday in the Sun is a rip off of In the City :/
      The Libertines are usually put in the garage revival category. But they are definitely something like garage-punk with indie rock.

    • @dw89music73
      @dw89music73 Před 10 lety

      Suicidal Tendencies are what I would call "Punk metal". Sure, they started off as plain hardcore punk (e.g. Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, The Circle Jerks, etc.) as their first album from 1983 proved. But when they followed it up with 1987's Join The Army, they moved into more metal territory while still retaining their punk edge.

    The fact that minor threat is just an honorable mention and not in the top 3 is mind blowing, personally I would’ve put bad brains in the honorable mentions as they’re a one album wonder and would’ve swapped the stooges with the ramones and put minor threat at 3, that’s an ideal list to me.
